Cattiversary!

It was five years ago today that I took a bus across Boston to get a kitten, and instead came home with a one-year-old cat that I planned to name Feathertail. That name lasted one day.

At first, she was overshadowed by Jelly Roll's huge personality, but she came into her own as a chatty Cathy (that's noted in the second blog post, and it's only gotten more prominent as she's gotten comfortable), and a serious caretaker cat. Which is lucky, as I need lots of taking care of, apparently. ;p Getting a cat was the best decision I've made in a long time. She makes my life better, and I hope I do the same for her! Even if I can't get a decent picture!

And in five years, despite being fully-clawed, the only scratches I've ever gotten from her have been accidental. I've never seen her take a swipe at anyone.

Happy Cattiversary!! She's beautiful. I'd say she's got some MaineCoone in her. They are a talky bunch, does she also "flop" down and want you to pet her? Cats are great!

I have no idea what she has in her, really, but Maine Coon seems a popular guess--someone asked me when I took her in for a nail trim if she was a Maine Coon, too. Except for her rather small stature, I'd guess there's a whole lot of that particular breed. (They're prone to her polydactyly, too. Which is totally an evolutionary trait. She has an opposable thumb.)

I got a MC last year from the Humane Society, we had no idea that's what he was. He was the sweetest kitten, he loved to lay in my arms. Then he hitched a ride on the under carriage of my truck and fell of along the Hwy. when I was going 55 mph. He spent a week in the "wild" next to some train tracks until he was strong enough to make his way to the nearest house. They answered our ad for a missing cat. He's still sweet, but he is really skiddish now. Another MC just showed up on our doorstep two months ago, he's a stray, but he's worming his way into our hearts. He lets us pet him and pick him up. MC are wonderful cats and not all of them are huge.

Having met a few that I know are Maine Coons, definitely, great cats.

My suspicion about Cindy is that she may have been picked out as a show kitten by someone who didn't know the rules, and then found out that being double-pawed disqualified her. She hadn't been fixed, and when the shelter found her wandering around, she had kittens (at less than a year old). Poor thing had to be shaved at the shelter because she'd gotten so matted. That's why her hair seems to have fluffed out so much since I got her; it still hadn't grown all the way out. I think someone just took her outside and left her there--I took her out on a leash once, and she broke it trying to get back in, she was so scared.

So cute! And it's still funny to me how much she looks like my Luna (seen in a crappy picture here with Lysander). She's quite petite, too. They must be the same mysterious breed/mix. Very playful and quite mouthy, but never aggressive or intentionally harmful with her teeth or claws (though she doesn't 'talk' much).

Heh, they do look alike! (And Luna's a great name for the temperament.)

If I'd named the twins Fred and George instead of Lorcan and Lysander, I would have named her Ginny, but alas, none of them are gingers.

Happy Cattiversary! I never considered myself a 'cat person', until I got one!

Funny how they sell themselves, isn't it?

Awww she's adorable. Happy cattiversary!

I really miss having a cat, I can't wait until I'm settled enough to get one (moving countries every few years isn't very conducive to long-lived pets :(..)

At the moment I stock up on cat-love when I visit my Mum's each year. She has a grumpy old grey cat and an adorable friendly Burmese boy.

*sigh* I love cats. I can't wait until I'm in a bigger place again and can have one. Yours is lovely.
