Batch 3: After the War (3)
in those nineteen years some crazy witch tries to kidnap Harry because she is has a bad concept of hero worshipping. drabble on the aftermath of it, the rescue, what the crazy witch tried to do, etc. i know it's nuts but I couldn't think what else. it's different? for Caroline

"So, that's why Zacharias Smith had it in for you," Ginny said mildly, looking at the curly-haired woman through the window of the closed ward. "I knew she'd asked you to the ball, but I had no idea she was his sister. Didn't actually know her name."

"Neither did I until two days ago," Harry said. "I'm going to make sure she's all right here."

Ginny rolled her eyes, but didn't say anything. Her expression made words unnecessary. After five years of marriage, Harry could read every plane of her face. This particular expression said, Harry, only you would start babysitting a woman who made a pathetic attempt at a binding love spell on you, meaning to keep you as a pet.

He shrugged. She'd know perfectly well that it meant, Yes, but I am me, so I'd best get about my business.

She grinned.

Harry opened the door and went into the closed ward. Lockhart waved cheerfully behind his stack of letters. Harry waved back absently and went past him to the curtained-off bed where Priscilla Smith was being held. He opened the curtains, half-expecting to find Zacharias in a towering rage, but it was just Priscilla, her curly hair fanned out on the pillow. She'd been given a Calming Concoction, and her eyes were slightly unfocused, but she smiled. "You came to me," she muttered, her words slightly slurred.

"I came to check on you. I was worried that the counter-spell hit you a bit hard."

"Mm," she said lightly, shrugging.

"They'll take good care of you here. I know a lot of the Healers."

"Healer Tonks thinks I should be in Azkaban," Priscilla offered vaguely. "I heard her tell Healer Stone when they thought I was still sleeping." She put a finger playfully over her mouth to indicate that this was a secret.

Harry ground his teeth. Andromeda was generally one of the kindest and most loving people he knew... except when it came to people who had tried to hurt anyone she loved. In most cases, Harry didn't mind this. It fell on Death Eaters and collaborators. In this case... well, he'd have preferred she not go into full mother bear mode. It was embarrassing enough without people being reminded. "Er... is there anything I can do for you here, Priscilla?"

"You can stay!"

"Anything other than that."

"No. Not really." She sighed. "I wish you loved me. Well, I know you love everyone," she added, embarrassed at what she clearly saw as a breach of doctrine. "You love all of the Order, and all of the children, and all of the reformed Death Eaters..."

"I think you have me mixed up with someone else," Harry said.

"...and you probably love me that way. But I'd like it if you loved me specially."

There was precisely nothing to say to that. She'd said it several times in the cabin where she'd tried to trap him, and he hadn't thought of an answer there, either. People hating him and trying to kill him were considerably easier to deal with. He supposed he could have lied, but the thought of Merope Gaunt stopped him. It was better not to feed her fantasy.

"Well," he said, "while you're here, perhaps you could, er... do me a favor."

She looked up in a foggily eager way. "Yes?"

He cast around for something, then said, "You could help Professor Lockhart with his correspondence! I'm sure he'd like the company."

Pricilla nodded in agreement. "When I was coming in, he said I had pretty hair."

"Well, then. Er... that's settled." She smiled at him expectantly, and he backed away, closing the curtains behind him.

can I ask you for another wonderful luna-harry friendship one? maybe helping Luna and her dad rebuild their house? for frida-storney
----------
"I really am sorry about your house," Harry said, helping Luna Levitate stones up to the second floor wall, where Hermione would use the Mortar Charm to bind them together.

Luna sighed. "I quite understand. Daddy was under quite a lot of stress, you know."

"We did what we could to make sure he wasn't accused of lying. Unfortunately, they still accused him of letting us get away."

"He's out of Azkaban now," Luna said. "Everything will be all right once we get the house repaired."

Harry looked down the hill, towards where Xeno Lovegood was carrying on an apparently fascinating conversation with a tufted duck. "Er... right."

Luna followed his gaze, a cloud passing over her generally untroubled face. She blinked it away. "I wonder what the duck is saying," she said. "I suspect you don't believe it's talking."

"Well, I've never heard of ducks talking."

"That doesn't mean they don't. Lack of evidence is not evidence of lack." She bit her lip, obviously not quite having convinced herself. Harry had a feeling that she had a very hard time ahead of her, realizing that her father really wasn't all there. She would fight it... but they'd already seen the caretaking shift. Luna looked after Xeno now. It was never spoken of, and she would deny it if they tried to speak of it, but it was perfectly plain. Luna just wasn't ready to admit that she was the strong one. She turned back to the pile of broken rocks and Levitated another one. "I suppose that must have really been an erumpent horn," she said. "It did look quite a bit like a Snorkack horn. I shall have to note that in my files."

"And note that it's a good idea to keep the erumpent horn outside."

She laughed. "Yes. Yes, of course." She looked up. "We've nearly reached the ceiling. I wonder if my drawing survived somewhere."

"I hope so," Harry said. "I saw your drawings. They were quite beautiful."

"If not, I can re-do them. We've all changed a little, haven't we? Death and life and so on."

Harry knew that Luna had very strong suspicions about what had happened in the Forbidden Forest. Everyone else assumed it had all been an elaborate ruse. Luna, who believed in what couldn't be proven--and had been raised on the story of the Hallows--knew differently. The only pieces of information she was missing was that Dumbledore had found the Stone, and that Voldemort had made himself into Harry's horcrux. He could imagine telling her everything someday, as he'd told Ginny and would tell Neville.

"Yes," he said. "We've all changed a little."

"In that case, maybe it's best if I re-do the drawings, even if we find some of the old ones. I've already drawn a new picture of Neville, you know." She smiled slyly.

"Are you going to pair us all up properly?" Harry asked, meaning it as a joke.

She shook her head. "No. That's another matter. That's three twos. I'd draw us as one six." She considered it. "I think I'll put myself and Ginny and Neville on the inside--looking inward--and you and Ron and Hermione on the outside, looking outward."

"Well, we'd all have one another's backs that way," Harry said.

"Exactly," Luna said. Her face fell. "Oh, I'd best call Daddy. He forgets sometimes, about water, when he wants to talk to a fish..."

Fern, can I just say the thing I love about your writing the most is the way you take a throwaway line from JKR's books and spin it into a full story.

Keep up the amazing stories :)

"I think you have me mixed up with someone else," Harry said.

Oh, poor Harry! It's a very good vignette, and I like the wry humour he's using to cope.

I always liked Harry's rather wry sense of humor.

You've channeled Harry and Luna so well in these. Poor Harry, trying to help, trying to do the right thing. Ms. Smith might enjoy helping Lockhart, though, and he'll be thrilled. I do love your Luna!

He'll probably give her a year's worth of hair potions or something!

Oh, I love that first one (especially this line: Yes, but I am me, so I'd best get about my business.) You have a way of writing all of these characters that makes me like them even more than when I read the books. If you ever feel like writing a longer story between Harry's school years and Teddy's school years, this would be an interesting one to see in full. Maybe not a whole novel, but perhaps a novella?

Oh. Wow. I especially love the Luna/Harry one and Luna's "strong suspicions." That he's already told Ginny makes sense as would telling Neville, what with the snake and the nearly-Chosen-ness (though, I don't know if Harry would mention that...) Has he told Ron and Hermione? I imagine so, since they already know so much of it and I think they would be after him to explain but in a strange way... it would be easier to tell the other trio than Ron and Hermione. I think the other trio would understand too but that Ron and Hermione would probably feel really, really guilty about it all....

the luna-harry one was more somber than I thought, but i liked it. I liked the mention of renewing the friendship painting as a reflection of a stronger friendship.

did xeno went mental or was it luna realizing he's mental?
