Batch 4: After the War (4)
Okay, I'm going to quickly post two more before I risk losing the computer again.

post hogwarts luna? i always wondered if after the war luna changed at all from pre-war luna. for hortentia bubble

[Hmm. My opinion is that Luna has one of those personalities that really wouldn't be terribly changed, which is why I normally write her as just an older version of herself. But her circumstances certainly changed, didn't they?]
----------
Whenever Neville was by himself, he agonized over the idea that he was going out with Luna Lovegood because it was such a nice symmetry--Harry and Ginny were definitely engaged, Ron and Hermione were engaged as far as anyone knew. That left Luna and Neville, perfectly matched to finish out the group that had fought so closely together. Was he treating her like she was somehow obvious for him? Taking for granted that they'd be together? Was he just emulating Harry and Ron?

He also worried sometimes that it was her oddness he was attracted to, that her watery smile and pale eyes reminded him of Mum somehow. That would just be disturbing.

All of the worrying disappeared, though, when he was with her, and they just talked with one another and walked through the woods. Neville knew the plants and trees. Luna knew the animals. They never ran out of things to say in the woods. He wished he'd known her better before the battles started. He expected he might not have spent so much time alone.

When she'd shown up to help him set up his new office--as a Herbology professor, much to his personal amazement--they'd fallen into conversation without really paying attention to what they were saying. So far, they'd managed to talk about honking daffodils, Quidditch, Ron and Hermione, Professor McGonagall's retirement, and, most recently, news from astronomers about a planet-like object called Quaoar.

"It's in Ophiuchus," Luna said. "The Romans thought the serpent-bearer was Asclepius, so perhaps we'll be seeing advances in Healing soon. Could you Levitate this flower pot? I think we can attract some bees if we put the plant up higher."

"You really think I should have bees in my office?"

"Only if you mean to have a real garden in here," she said.

"I do know how to cross-pollinate without insect help."

She wrinkled her nose cutely. "Yes, but then you'll know exactly what will grow. What fun is that?"

"I believe they call that gardening."

"Hmmph." She got the plant situated on a ledge at the top of the window, where the frame started to go up into its arch. "Do you think Quaoar will be in the star charts for Astrology? What will it mean if it's ascendant?"

"Probably that Trelawney's been replaced. She doesn't believe in Quaoar."

"She's always been very literal," Luna said.

Even after all these years, Neville could never be completely sure when Luna was joking. He smiled.

"What is it?" she asked.

"You. You're exactly the same as you were when I met you."

She frowned slightly. "What was I meant to turn into?"

"I don't know. Just... after everything. You're the same."

She looked slightly puzzled, then Summoned a watering can and watered the plant. "Well, I suppose... I've got a bit braver. I never dared to talk to you before everything."

"Yes, I was so threatening then."

"You were very handsome, I thought."

"No, you didn't."

"Well, I'm sure I would have, if I'd seen you." She craned her neck suddenly and said, "Oh, look! A Highland High-hat!" She reached up with her hands cupped, and let a spider crawl into them. She cooed at it.

Neville rolled his eyes, and turned to organizing his files.

harry and Neville interacting? i always had the impression they kind of admired each other, specially after the war. so kind of them meeting up and having a talk on how things changed for both of them through the years, and at the same time thanking the other for having faith? (neville probably was very greatful to harry, ron, hermione for giving him a chance to prove himself- through the DA) and Harry was probably real greatful to neville not giving up on him during the horcrux year, and protecting hogwarts and the others while he wasn't there. for Jeanne
----------
"I hear they just gave you the Sorting Hat," Harry said, sitting down on the chaise in the greenhouse.

Neville looked both pleased and embarrassed. "Well, someone had to take that job over, now that McGonagall retired. Might as well be the new man, I suppose."

"Some other new man who had it burned on his head?" Harry grinned. "I understand they were going to recruit you do that even if you hadn't taken the job."

"Guess it's a good thing I took it, then. Though I imagine if you'd taken the job they wanted to give you, you'd be the one saying hello to first years."

Harry snorted. "Oh, no. All I did was walk out into the forest, get carried back, and then shout a lot. You were a human candle, and you slayed the dragon." He shook his head. "Ginny says there's quite a lot of argument in Teen Witch about us. Apparently, at the moment, you're winning."

Neville covered his face and sat down, leaning over the tea set. Harry could see between his fingers that his face was red. "Oh, God. Does that embarrass you, too?"

"You have no idea. Well, then again, I guess you do."

"Does Ron get this?"

"Oh, yes. The girls don't, though. It's unfair. Ginny has to put up with it because of the Harpies, but none of the magazines have had a poll about whether Hermione or Luna is cuter."

"You didn't tell me it was about being cute! I thought it was about our various feats of heroism. No wonder I'm winning."

"Apparently, cuter boys are more heroic. Or doing idiotic things makes one cuter. I'm not sure which way that goes.

"Too bad they got stuck with a puffy Herbologist like me and a specky git like you to choose from." Neville grinned, then sat back, looking more thoughtful. "I suppose I never imagined myself in the same class as you or Ron."

"Don't be stupid. You were always with us. First year, it was your points that got us the cup."

Harry expected Neville to say something light and brush it off, but Neville didn't say anything immediately. Instead, he looked at the tea in his cup for a long time, then said, "I'm glad you trusted me to kill the snake."

"Oh. Well... why wouldn't I? You'd just spent the whole year leading everyone."

"Waiting for you to come back."

"I couldn't have done what you did."

"I couldn't have done what you did, either," Neville said.

They looked at each other solemnly, the war hanging between them. Then Harry laughed. A moment later, Neville laughed as well.

"It's a good thing we were both around then," Harry said. "Now... what's this I hear about you and Luna and a trip to Antigua...?

Thanks--I think they'd have a lot to talk about after TDH.

I already did her meeting Rolf (Charlie introduced them over dragons in Romania, not long after she and Neville break up). Glad you liked what was there.

Hurrah for two more! And two that each featured Neville, so that's even better. I loved them both, both felt realistic and entirely in character.

Loved that second one especially. It's so nice to see Neville receiving appreciation and understanding that he contributed so much that horrible last year!

Even if it is in a sort of... embarrassing way.

*grin* I was just talking about from Harry. The Witch Weekly thing.... Uck, that would be so very embarrassing!!

Ah, Neville and Luna. I can see them dating like this (mostly because it would be the obvious or expected thing), but I don't think they'd make a particularly good couple in the long term. Somehow their personalities don't seem quite right for it to me, so I'm kinda glad it didn't go that way (although I'm still a bit baffled by the movie's totally fanfic moment with them).

Oh my goodness, Harry and Neville are adorable. I love humble heroes. I can totally see all of that happening, too. Those teen mags, man.

I can see them falling into a sort of expected courtship for a while as well.

I'd forgotten/didn't know you went w Luna and Neville dating after the war--when do they break up and get together w their eventual spouses?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: December 19th, 2011 12:12 am (UTC) (Link)
They break up not long after this, because he's staying at Hogwarts and she wants to see the world. One place she stops is at the Dragon preserve in Romania, where Charlie introduces her to Rolf. Neville, of course, doesn't get together with Hannah for quite a while.

LOVED the second one

love all friendships fics you write, as i love all the friendships in the books.

also found hysterical how the magazines are doing all this ridiculous A vs B to see who is the better hero, and Harry and Neville not only make fun of the whole thing, but also tell the other person he was just as important and valuable.

i loved that

Re: LOVED the second one

I figure, if fandom will do it, so will their in-world fandom. ;p
