Fanfiction Survey
How old are you?34
How old were you when you first started reading/writing fanfiction in general? When I started writing? Twelve or thirteen. When I realized that it had a name and other people did it, too? Twenty-three.
Do you ever feel your interpretation of the books has been affected by fandom? No, not really. I don't pay much attention to fanon.
Do you openly share your participation in fandom, or only with certain people? Or do you keep it a secret entirely, except for people you see online?Sure. My mission in life is to get people to see fandom as a perfectly legitimate hobby.
Did you ever write/read fanfic for any fandoms before Harry Potter?Oh, yeah.
What other fandoms do you write/ read fics for, if any?Quantum Leap, Star Wars
Have you ever written a crossover?Yes. (SW/LotR)
What about an Alternative Universe?Lots, though they were all in SW.
Were either/both challenging, or did you find either/both easy?Very difficult. Canon compliant alternate universe is a lot of brain work.
What do you think of original characters?I love them. I wouldn't be in the fandom if I didn't like the characters.
Have you ever read an exceptionally good original character?Several
In your opinion, what is the difference between a good original character and a "Mary Sue"?A Mary Sue is badly realized, usurps the position of canon characters, and causes canon characters to behave out of character.
Have you ever read any exceptionally good OC's? (Feel free to name some!)Put me on the spot, sure... I like jiminyc's Bridget, and Alkari's version of Remus's parents, and... well, the thing about OCs is that they fit in so smoothly that it's hard to think of them as a separate category.
Has any fanfiction you've ever read personally affected you?Probably, but I'm blanking at the moment.
Have you ever written a fanfic based on a real event you or someone else experienced? In very obscure ways.
Have you ever written an original story based on a fanfic idea? No. I've tried, but it makes me feel guilty and dishonest.
How about the reverse?No.
What do you think of the movies?I liked the first two to some extent; the third annoyed me. I like the cast a lot. The adaptations? Too unfaithful.
Do you think that the movies and marketing are a good thing, or do you think they take away from the books?Sure. The hype is fun and the movie releases give us some kind of "ritual moments" to all get together and talk HP.
Finally, back to fandom. What are some advantages and disadvantages of fansites and fanfiction? The great advantage is realizing that you're not alone out there, and there are plenty of perfectly normal people out there who think about these things. It also keeps interest up between books to be able to talk about them. The downside is that people get very committed to some odd theories not likely to "pay off," and they may get disappointed when it fails to turn out that way.
Do you think it has taught you anything? It's taught me to read carefully, to see possibilities under the surface of the prose.
Finally - have you changed since you first started writing?I started at 12 and I'm 34... yeah, I've changed.

I do like your definition of a Mary Sue! Sometimes there's far too much in fandom of people calling every single OC a Mary Sue when it's just not the case.

Someone told me you'd taken this survey, and I wanted to see what people said, since I created it. That, and you're a fellow quiller, and I love your fanfics. Elizabeth Phelan is a great character, and I love how you've written Tonks (or Dora, as she is called in her earlier years - how adorable). By the way, I'm Author by Night there, not Azaelia - I know there's one on the forums.

Sorry, I know this isn't supposed to be a review thread.
