I know I'm being pokey about getting Chapter Six of TBE done. It's… - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003

I know I'm being pokey about getting Chapter Six of TBE done. It's about 1700 words in. I need a children's round song, other than "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" or "Frere Jacques." Something Effrim might know. Maybe I need to write a new one, but I can't find the rules of writing a round.

Yes, these are the things I'm stuck on.

I'll do it after work tomorrow.

ETA: I took the first verse and chorus of THT from the movie soundtrack (though there have been versions I've liked better) and put it through some tracks on Audacity. It works great as a four part round. I don't know if I'll use it, but dangit, it works.

"Three blind mice" is a round, as is "Sumer is icumen in". "I love the flowers, I love the daffodils", "London's burning" Oh, and "Dona Nobis Pacem", of course.

If I remember right, you had Katniss singing "london bridge" in your one shot songs of victory. Might be a nice one from the family

Other suggestions, Do a deer, Ghost of tom (a haunting round we used to sing in choir).

Otherwise if you make your own the easiest way is to make 2bar/8beat or 4 bar/16beat sections, and limit the number of chords to just a couple.

I wonder if "Hanging Tree" could be done as a round? I wouldn't use it in context, since where he is, it wouldn't be a good idea for him, but I think it could in the movie version of the song. (I loved the nod to executive meddling in the movie -- obviously someone forced them to change it to "necklace of hope," so they made Plutarch do the same thing, and Haymitch give it the sarcastic eyeroll it so well deserved.)

ETA: Tried singing it in a round with the JLaw version. Works perfectly. I may have to rethink him not using it. I'm trying to decide if it would be a terrific echo or WAY too on point to be comfortable.

I guess kookaburra sits on the old gum tree wouldn't exactly be appropriate...

It could be there (it's a school standard here, and I do it Music and Movement with three year olds, so it could survive as a children's song), but probably no one would have the slightest idea what it was talking about anymore. :D

Charlestown? Rose? I used to work at a camp; l'll think of more later. But I like the previous poster's idea of tying it to Katniss.

Make new friends, but keep the old/One is silver and the other's gold/A circle is round, it has no end/That's how long I wanna be your friend.

We used to sing it in Girl Scouts.

I always liked this one from Sesame Street (YouTube link). When I went to look up the actual title, though, I found out the original lyric is "gallow tree", not "redwood tree" (PDF).

Go figure.

Ooo, that's pretty. And maybe an inspiration for "The Hanging Tree"!
