Very nice to see a Harry who's fully integrated in the wizarding world and comfortable with navigating people and places within it ... he has both James and Lily's traits in him that show up more strongly in this than in PS/SS, kind of like the Harry we see in the later books. It's also interesting how he and Ron still don't like Hermione much although their first introduction to her is now gentler and more friendly. I look forward to seeing how the friendship ends up developing in this timeline!

I adore your Neville and how you portray his quiet dignity. He may not be as outspoken about it as Gran, but he has inherited her poise in his own way! And yes, the hat is right. Not a sly bone in him! The battle would be between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor as you've suggested. And one thing Neville seems to do by his nature is to pick what is right over what is easy. The way he invited Hermione to join him is a classic example!

It's fun to write Harry this way. He's very different because his socialization didn't get stunted by the Dursleys, but he's still -- to me, anyway -- recognizably Harry. I think he and Ron are both put off by Hermione's nervous swottiness more than anything else, just like Neville is completely overwhelmed by it. She needs to chill out a little bit, and they need to recognize that it's just a nervous tic. :D

Neville is a very neat character, and I think a lot of that was foreshadowed in the first book, with the points he earned for telling off the heroes -- not because he was right (or wrong), but because that took a radical level of guts.
