I really should stop spamming my journal
This is what, the fourth today?

Bleargh.

It occurs to me that I have a slightly pathological obsession with attention. I was just over at deleterius, thinking, "Man, I'd love to be sporked... so many comments, and a bunch of them are long!" And of course, when I went to show TFN's different methods of sorting its fics, and found out that By the Grace of Lady Vader is in SECOND PLACE! IN THE WHOLE ARCHIVE!!!!, I went on a mad exclamation point kick and did my triumph dance (check it out, a_p_ and ladyaeryn... it's sincerely cool, and the triumph dance is fun). I am so shallow. Shallow enough to gloat over a few more things in the top ten as well, and angst over the fact that Father's Heart slipped a notch, though relieved that it's Ascension of the Queen that's hot on its heels.

I'm really pathetically competitive.

I feel a bit...: silly silly

No, no, no. You're ambitious.

Be careful, Fern. People might think you're a Slytherin :D

If it's any comfort, someone wasn't too complimentary here:

Just in case ya hadn't seen it yet. :)

Nope, I'd missed that. Of course, that's not really a look at the fic, and if he thought the FH Vader was fluffy, he didn't read it.
straussmonster From: straussmonster Date: December 30th, 2004 03:12 am (UTC) (Link)
he didn't read it..

It would be neither the first time or the last. I generally do something the courtesy of a complete read before leaving nasty critical commentary, unless it's waving "Hi, I'm a trainwreck!" from the very, very beginning.

At any rate, hey--I was cited as more or less the source of what's wrong with Vader characterization. That makes me a BNF, doesn't it? :p

Seriously, his argument suggests not just that he didn't read the fic in question, but that he doesn't have much understanding of the character he's talking about, or of the mechanics of POV writing. Throughout FH, Vader is behaving as he generally behaves. But in his POV, he's a good guy, doing some nasty things to achieve a good end, and he doesn't think about it much. He shuts it away and compartmentalizes his life. So in his POV, we're never going to get a view of his atrocities, because he generally doesn't think about them too deeply. And the fact that he does bad things doesn't change the fact that he can do good things, which is the point of a couple of the stories he complains about. "Uprising," of course, does in fact deal with his rescue of an abused child. He rushes in and slices her father in half without asking any questions or giving any opportunity for nonviolent surrender.

Are you now taking applications from prospective minions? :)

Ooh, ooh! Can I be a minion of fernwithy too?

On topic here, I read the rant about fluffy Vader at fanficrants and kind of rolled my eyes. *Any* extreme characterization is flawed. A story that depicts Vader torturing puppies for fun is just as out of whack as a story that shows him secretly supporting the Rebel Alliance. Now, I've read a lot of Vader fic, and most authors tend to get the character of Vader more or less right. Who knows? Maybe I've just read superior Vader fic! However, I think most writers see that Vader did evil things and was genuinely a bad guy, but they also see that his redemption at the end of RotJ did not come out of nowhere.

A pathetically competitive attention-whore can never have too many minions. :p

:choking on laughter at image of self with minions, flashing on Buffy in hysterics in her kitchen, saying "Harmony has minions?!":

On the matter of Vader, I think he's a well-drawn character in canon, and that's probably why a lot of writers actually do get him right. (Pre-Vader Anakin seems to be a challenge for a few, though.) Vader is that guy who does what you wish you could to the various people in your life who really screw things up, but that you don't do because you have, you know, a moral compass. Most of us don't want to take over the universe--sounds like too much work to me--so Palpatine is a little out of reach for those of us who aren't megalomaniacs. Darth Maul is totally focused on ideological revenge, and pretty alien to anyone not personally trained to be a violent fanatic wreaking vengeance on people who don't even know what wrongs they've supposedly committed. And Dooku? Seems to be pure greed, and most of us, while we've experienced greed, aren't exactly dominated by it. But Vader? He's a guy who's trying to make things work and keeps getting deeper into trouble because he won't let go of a bad idea of how to do it. Most of us have gotten trapped in the "Means justify the ends" reasoning at some point in our lives, even if it's just cutting corners, and most of us have lost our tempers a few times. And most of us know that someone we love and value asking us to look at ourselves is usually the best catalyst to change. So yeah... Vader is a comprehensible guy. Which he should be, since Anakin is the ego of the piece and is supposed to be someone we understand, because he's us.

I am already a minion of the ever-so-evil angua9.
Hmm. Can one minion serve to masters—sorry, mistresses?

This is the first time I recall being specifically labeled with such a huge accusation. (This ranks right up there with the idiot who said I believed Hermione would 'demean herself' to swoon over Ron even though he was being a prat in GoF, all because I pointed out - contradictory to his argument - that there was one citable instance that could be seen as her encouraging his feelings. *chuckles*)

Part of me is amused and flattered, but part of me's also resentful of the high-and-mighty attitude some of those posters have taken, the "we don't sanitize him, unlike these whitewashers" rhetoric. I just can't wrap my head around the logic of some of those posts: we believe he did have moments of regret, etc. etc.... but he never once did anything remotely good as Vader? They can buy him turning back out of love for Luke after knowing him only a few minutes, but they evidently can't buy that the traits that were obviously there for him to make such a turn from the dark to begin with might have occasionally manifested themselves in a *gasp* not entirely horrid manner beforehand.

And like you pointed out, it's certainly not like Vader didn't do his share of nasty things in FH. He and Amidala were hardly spending their time in BtGoLV handing out cupcakes to the poor ickle misbehaving Rebels, either. It does make me wonder if they read the same version of the fics we did.

Anyway, I've already wasted too much time on this. Need to go finish my SJ paper.

Part of me is amused and flattered

That's mainly my reaction. I don't think I've actually written a SW fic since...At the Homestead...? At any rate, it's been awhile. It's nice to know I'm still one of the first names to come to mind! ;) Just call me white-washing, Anakin-apologist, fluff-loving, fangirl #3. That's big-time, baby! :D

I'm sorry, I probably should be bothered at some level, but I just can't do it. People read things how they want and interpret all sorts of things about the fics (and about us personally) however they want. Nature of the beast in this always-so-wonderful fandom.

I probably should be bothered at some level

I'm sort of bothered at a logic level ("Sure, he's complex, but he'd never do anything that might suggest complexity"), but on a personal level?

Snerk.

The fanficrants stuff is wanky, but still, the #2 in hits thing is very cool. :D

Thanks for posting that link. I lost a number of links recently due to having to uninstall a corrupted ISP and install a new version, and the link to "By the Grace of Lady Vader" was one of the things I lost. I'm glad to have it back.
