Long meme
Swiped from ladyelaine, whose link to Phantom of the Opera Mah Jong has also proven a great time waster. :p

1. First name?
Barbara

2. Were you named after anyone?
Yes--an ancestress from Alsace-Lorraine, Barbara Mathes (pronounced "Matisse," like the painter, for some reason, and occasionally spelled that way), who came to America as an indentured servant, carrying some china and a parasol. I have the parasol because I have the name. The china is scattered around the family.

3. Do you wish on stars?
Yup.

4. When did you last cry?
I don't remember.

5. Do you like your handwriting?
Even I can't read my handwriting. It must be cool, right? (Er, no. It's a childish scrawl.)

6. What's your favorite lunch meat?
Roast beef.

7. What is your birth date?
July 24, 1970.

8. What is your most embarrassing CD?
The Bitter Suite (Xena musical). Though I'm planning to purchase "An Evening With John Denver" and possibly some Barry Manilow, so Xena seems cool in contrast.

9. If you were another person, would YOU be friends with you?
I would find me a bit standoffish, especially of late.

10. Are you a daredevil?
:gales of laughter:

12. Do looks matter?
Not in an all-consuming way, but sure. We're visual animals.

13. How do you release anger?
Fume to myself during the walk home, possibly make an LJ rant.

14. Where is your second home?
Where is my first one? I just have an apartment and my job.

15. Do you trust others easily?
No.

16. What was your favorite toy as a child?
Didn't have a specific one.

17. Which class in high school do you think was totally stupid?
Health and gym.

18. Do you have a journal?
Er... Is that a trick question?

19. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Oh, no. Never.

20. What are your nicknames?
My uncle calls me Babs (no one else gets away with that nonsense). Most of my family and HS friends call me Barb. Everyone else calls me "Barbara," which I switched to without fanfare when I went to college. Junior year, a friend in college laughed quite merrily at the idea that anyone had ever called me anything but Barbara. "You... Barb? No way!" This amused me.

21. Would you bungee jump?
Sure. Right after I take a swim in a shark tank with a shaving nick on my leg.

22. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?
Not generally.

23. Do you think that you are strong?
Reasonably.

24. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch

25. Shoe size?
Seven and a half

26. Red or pink?
Red. Deep, wine red.

27. What is your least favorite thing about yourself?
Good at getting things started, but lousy at following through. And I can severely let people down by doing this.

28. Who do you miss most?
I haven't lost anyone recently, so there's nothing fresh. I miss everyone I no longer have around, though.

29. Do you want everyone to whom you send this to send it back?
Well, that makes sense of question 18, at least.

30. What color pants and shoes are you wearing?
I'm in a skirt. It's black. And I'm wearing my brown snowboots so I can have a quick getaway at lunch hour.

31. What are you listening to right now?
People coming and going in the lobby downstairs.

32. Last thing you ate?
A Life Saver.

33. If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Depends on the mood. Most likely a dark blue.

34. What is the weather like right now?
Sunny and chilly, but not frigid.

35. Last person you talked to on the phone?
Co-worker.

36. The first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
The face. No particular feature, though I love good eyes and a kind mouth; I just notice if a face is particularly wonderful. (I saw the most beautiful man's face the other night. Just a guy sleeping on the T. But lovely sample of the species.)

37. Do you like the person who sent this to you?
Totally.

38. What is your ethnicity?
Mostly Anglo, with a healthy substrain of German. The rest is a mixed bag, which includes but probably isn't limited to French, Danish, Irish, Scottish, and Onondaga. (Trust me, you can't see the last; judging by my looks, I'd have to chalk that up to family legend.)

39. Favorite drink?
Sam Adams. Or Diet Pepsi, depending on the time of day.

40. Favorite sport?
Gymnastics.

41. Hair color?
Brown.

42. Eye color?
Blue.

43. Do you wear contacts?
Yup.

44. Are you single?
Yes. I hate it.

45. Favorite food?
I could live on McDonald's McGriddle sandwiches, if I weren't always rushed in the morning.

46. Last movie you watched?
Mulan 2. (Okay, yes, shoot me now.)

47. Favorite day of the year?
Fourth of July.

48. Scary movies or happy endings?
Most scary movies have happy endings (sort of). So, um, both.

49. Summer or winter?
Summer.

50. Hugs or kisses?
Hugs.

51. Do you have any favorite rants and, if so, what are they?
Academic feminism. I'll start it again if I don't harshly curtail myself.

52. What is your favorite dessert?
Pretty much anything involving ice cream.

53. Who is most likely to respond?
Obviously, this was an e-mail meme to start with.

54. Who is most likely not to respond?
Ditto.

55. What books are you reading?
Peter and the Starcatchers, a constant re-read of the DoM chaps of OotP, some cryptozoology books, and a stack of Jung.

56. What's on your mouse pad?
Bright polka dots at work. At home, Anakin and Padmé.

57. What did you watch last night on TV?
Nothing at all.

58. Favorite smells?
Baking bread. Lilacs (though I'm violently allergic to them). Autumn leaves. The ocean.

59. Favorite sounds?
Rain on the roof. A bunch of kids playing Runescape and calling out instructions to each other. Violins.

60. Rolling Stones or Beatles?
Beatles. Definitely, definitely Beatles.

61. What's the farthest you've been from home?
A tour of Spain.

62. Do you have a special talent?
I can write.

Barbara Mathes(pronounced "Matisse," like the painter, for some reason, and occasionally spelled that way)

They're both pronounced about the same way in French. I think the only difference is that Mathes would be "Ma-tays," instead of "Mah-teessssssss," so it's close enough in pronounciation that people don't bother.

My ancestors battled with Stephens vs Stevens. They stayed with the original: Stephens. Both pronounced the same, different spellings. I think most ancestors battled with everyone mutilating their name, so that might be part of it. ;)

What is Onondaga, out of curiosity?

And you? Standoffish? I've never seen you show any signs of that. I know I sometimes come across as standoffish, because I can be quiet around people I don't know - is that what you meant?

Okay... the same side as the Puritian ancestors? If so, that's just freaky, because I got a story idea where this Puritian girl ends up falling in love with a Native American guy. It's not Romeo and Juliet-like, though; there's a ton of spiritual aspects on both ends and stuff, and that's mostly the plot; the romance simply helps them see the other side of the fence, so to speak.

Oh, it happened a lot. This particular one was with the Pennsylvania side of the family, but there was definitely fraternizing going on.

I've been doing so much writing that I haven't had a chance to get into it properly (and my library loan ran out this morning, so I'll have to wait through the hold list). I've heard good things, though, and it started decently.
