Chapter Eighteen of Shifts is up at SQ, with all references to any… - The Phantom Librarian

Chapter Eighteen of Shifts is up at SQ, with all references to any possible reaction Remus has to silver removed from it. I've never believed that he has one... why on earth did I put that in there?

Oh, well. That was in the whole build-up to Remus not being there much while Harry was there for Christmas, and I think I was just reaching for stuff.

You know, when I was younger, what I wanted more than anything in the world was to win an Oscar. Now, I can't even be arsed to turn the tv on and I care more about the best and worst dresses than the best actresses.

As a SW fan, do I care that La Nat didn't win? Not really. I'm not much of a cast fan anyway--I don't dislike them, but with the exception of Hayden Christensen, I really don't tend to go a country mile to see them in something, either. And Christensen's kind of iffy, though I'm glad I went to see Shattered Glass for him. (Harrison Ford doesn't count; it's a rare HF movie that you actually would need to make an effort to see.) So, no, although La Nat is on my mousepad, I don't really care that she didn't win, nor was I expecting her to.

Shrug. There hasn't been a movie out that I've especially cared about for awhile; maybe some year when I've actually enjoyed a few movies, I'll have a more vested interest.

Same here. Probably a big part of why I don't care much about these awards things to begin with. On my friendlist I see reactions from disappointment to "YAY, I don't have to gouge my eyes out!" (the latter of which is getting old) on the Nat thing, and I simply don't care. I mean, it might have been nice to see a SW person win something, but really, *shrug*.

I like Natalie sometimes. I thought she did a really good job in Garden State and I think she's well aclaimed for her job in The Professional having finally seen part of it this year, but I don't think she always is brilliant. And I haven't seen Closer so I can't say on that performance!

I thought there was actually some fairly tough competition this year, despite the fact that there were a lot of movies I hadn't seen. Most of them are on my want to see list. One movie I thought got sadly overlooked was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It got some nods, but not neraly as many as I felt it deserved.

Ah well.

Well, it got screenplay, which I thought was the main thing

Charlie Kaufman's a genius, so I was happy

So very very true. I was definitely happy with Eternal Sunshine's one win!

Chapter 18 woes from a few days ago

Y'know, I'm pretty sure SQ allows you to resubmit chapters - Just gotta let 'em know where it's supposed to go. Might be a possibility if you're really dissatisfied.

Hobbit Guy

P.S. I haven't commented enough, but yeah... Shifts totally rocked the big one. I'm sad it's over. Good writing like that is hard to come by.

Why would you think that silver does not harm wearwolves? It is a pretty consistent part of all (as far as I can tell) werwolf lore, even more so than ideas about transofrming on the full moon.

Just wondering it struck me as strange when I read it.

We've just seen no evidence of it whatsoever in canon, and we certainly would have by now.

Why on earth woudl we have seen any evidence in cannon regarding this? How many times have you come into contact with silver in the last few months? I have not at all in a number of years, and I am not avoiding it, nor am I at a bording school with little use for it.

By that logic I could say that there is no evidence that being shot in the head would kill him. Surly some werwolf legands hold that a werwolf could urvive such a blow.

I suppose the reason it strikes me as strange is that for me werwolves and silver is one of those things, like vampires drinking blood, that you assume to be the case unless the specific work of fiction gives evidence to the contrary. Its just a given, its classically the only way to kill them.

But Remus does come into contact with silver--in the Black family kitchen, with the silver goblets. No one comments on it.
dalf From: dalf Date: March 4th, 2005 05:40 am (UTC) (Link)
I still don't see how that is relavent. The does the fact that molly did not warn every person entering the kitchen that they could be burned by thouching the pots and pans that were over the fire indicate that no one would be burned by them?

On the same token as I recall SIrius WAS getting rid of the sliver.

The point is that the silver was brought up, the issue of getting rid of it was brought up, and no one said, "Oh, we're getting rid of it because of Lupin." Further, Lupin is using one of the goblets in the scene. That was an opportunity to mention it if it's an issue; since it wasn't mentioned when JKR had a chance to point it out, it's safe to assume that it isn't an issue.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. Seeing as I don't think it says he was using one of the silver goblets (I could not find the sceen in the few minutes I took to look but I am not even sure that it says he was even drinking). The only thing I think we have form cannon (and I coudl be wrong as I did not actually go back and find the sceen) is that Remus was in the room with the black silver that that SOMEONE MAY have been using it.

Even if she had specifically had Remus using it I would still be more inclined to bealiev that it was a mistake on her part as I have seen a very large number of werwolf movies and read a very large number of werwolf books and silver hurts them in all cases.

Regardless, weather or not silver hurts Remus is not exactly critical to the plot of Shifts so my annoyance is mostly acedemic, and the Fic is still amazingly good.

So I am reading the rest of shifts that is not posted on the SQ linked form this journal. Since I was not sure where to put reviews/comments and I had this nice little "reply" link in my LJ I thought I would say:

- The bit in chapter 25 with Remus and aparating and ending up in the shack:

"Naturally. No matter how far he'd come from this place, it was here that he imagined himself most clearly--which wasn't particularly healthy, he supposed, but was at least convenient, as there was no one here to whom he would need to explain his presence."

Truly brillian! As this story gets longer I think your understanding and grasp for the characters espically Remus gets better and better too. There were lots of other moments in the last few chapters I have read (I am on chapter 26 just now) where I read it and said "wow" but I wont quote them all.

- The dialouge in chapters 25 and espically 26 is also amazing. Its in character and approprate for everyone and yet really witty for the seriousness of the situation.

- Allong the same veine as combinning serious and light hearted, I really like the mix of Remus and Dora getting together finnaly just as thigns start to get nasty. The contrast or juxaposition or whatever is well done.

- All in all there are only two thigns so far that I don't like about the fic one of them is obviously necessary for the way you are doing the story (and I mentioned it on a review on the SQ) and the other we were just debating today. Even with those two minor things the story seems to be getting better with each chapter.

(oh and is there a good place to review stuff for the chapters you have not posted to SQ yet?)

On the LJ entries is probably best; I check recent comments pretty regularly. The LJ entries are linked from the Table of Contents.
