I am a genius, naturally
Borrowed from a few people. I'm looking at it and thinking, "Damn, why isn't it telling me what I got wrong?!" (My HS bio teacher haunts me. I got a 98 on my Regents exam and she came up to me in the hall, looking annoyed, and said, "What did you get wrong?")

English Genius
You scored 93% Beginner, 93% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 77% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!
Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

Oddly Advanced
You scored 0% Beginner, 0% Intermediate, 87% Advanced, and 66% Expert!
Your test results are extremely interesting. Though your test scores in the beginner, intermediate, and expert levels weren't very high, you got at least 75% of the advanced level questions correct. Possibly you guessed very well in the advanced level section? I don't know what else to say. You puzzle me immensely. But....

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

Okay, so... those results confuse me. *tilts her head*

Word.

Advanced
You scored 100% Beginner, 86% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 61% Expert!
You have an extremly good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels's questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

Same as lucie_p (though I got 100% advanced) and I really want to know what the answers are!

I am not nearly as smart as you and furiosity, but I think it's pretty decent for someone who's considered a freshman in college. *smiles*

I absolutely agree that I wish they'd included wrong answers with the results.

...have also put this on my journal, I hadn't seen it before so thanks! :)

What was with the 'got done/had gotten done' question? In school, I was always taught that the correct word was 'finished'.

Yeah, tell me about it--that one was in the realm of, "Eek! Throw a pencil at the screen to grab one of them, because they all sound like crap!"

I have my doubts

Any test that evaluates me without telling me what I got wrong - especially where there *are* supposed to be right and wrong answers - is one that I find myself questioning. I did OK - 100% beginer, 93% intermediate, 93% advanced and 77% expert... and the only question I was unsure of was the one that went:

Please stay ________
(a) A while
(b) Awhile
(c) For a while
(d) All of the above

I checked (c) even though I think (a) is correct (is it??) because I felt pretty strongly that (b) was wrong, thereby ruling out (d). I need to check this up.

I liked the neat touch in the begining of that test, though, where the author of the test says that he/she mixed up American and British spellings. S/He hasn't, really, but I suppose some people who get confused in the test might think they're confused because one of the options is a Brit spelling, and the other is American. Good thinking on the author's part!

But mostly, I want to know what I got wrong!

Re: I have my doubts

By the rules of multiple-choicedness, since (a) and (c) are both obviously correct, it would follow that (d) is the correct answer. Though I agree with you that 'awhile' really doesn't look right.

... Though come to think of it, (a) may not be formally correct, even though it's completely acceptable in colloquial English. I dunno... I wish I could see the answers too.

Ha ha. I am weird. But how did I get 0% beginner, and so many other bad ones? I mean, I am the spelling whiz! I think I'll balme the answer key, just like I do in Physics. (Actually, in Physics I blame the teacher.)
chocolatepot From: chocolatepot Date: March 1st, 2005 02:37 am (UTC) (Link)
And just to prove myself a total whining idiot, I'll misspell "blame". And now I shall blame my tiredness on my horrible, horrible English project.

Being the (occasionally) OCD person that I am, I have proceeded to figure out what the "right" answers are. It's the latest entry in my journal, in which I also protest the correctness of some of the answers. (For example, the test only marks "towards" as correct, not "toward", when they're very definitely both correct; if anything, "toward" is more correct in America.)

So if you're still curious - or if anyone else is - feel free to check out my post. :)
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: March 1st, 2005 04:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh! I definitely thought "towards" was wrong!
From: (Anonymous) Date: March 2nd, 2005 02:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm even more confused now! I thought something was wrong with the test when I took it. It told me I had scored 0%,0%,0%, and 73%. Then, it told me I was ahead of 100% of the others who took it (?)!

When I looked at what Readerravenclaw had done, I was expecting to either find out that the 0% should have been 100% (and something was wrong with how it printed out on my screen) or that there were a bunch of British things I was clueless about.

Instead, I saw MOST of the answers I'd hit and a few I hadn't. So what do the 0% scores mean?
readerravenclaw From: readerravenclaw Date: March 2nd, 2005 07:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
The zeroes happen when the computer loses the information that you entered, probably because you took too long. Just try it again.
From: (Anonymous) Date: March 8th, 2005 05:18 am (UTC) (Link)
Ah. It was probably me. Since I knew it wouldn't show me which I got wrong, I spent a couple minutes looking up ones I wasn't certain about, although my computer's not that fast and it gets grumpy from time to time.

I agree, knowing which ones you got wrong and why is as important as taking the test in the first place. I HATED college essays for that reason. No explanation, just a letter grade at the top. Buh.
alkari From: alkari Date: March 1st, 2005 09:00 am (UTC) (Link)
I am also a Genius - scored 100% beginner, 100% intermediate, 93% advanced, and 77% expert.

And I certainly disputed some of their options!! None of "gotten / had gotten" options would EVER be used in British or Aussie English, and there were a few others that depended on context. I have seen all three options - a while / awhile / for a while - used in 'good' English, so I ticked that all three were valid. And the while / whilst option for studying is also open to debate, because there are a few subtleties in the use of those words than can make either of them correct in a particular situation. "While" implies time i.e. that they were each studying at the same time, but "whilst" is used more in the sense of an alternative ... he was doing X but ("whilst") she was doing Y. So you cannot say one is more correct than the other!!

GRRRR.
