Call me a cynic...
Call me a cynic, but I think that next year at this time, after RotS has broken the midnight opening record, the one-day record, and the four-day-weekend record (two of which are actual, the third of which is easily in reach), and has gotten to $100M more quickly than any other movie (possibly will do so today), and being well-received critically, some critic--possibly a TV critic getting ready for the new series--will open a paragraph with, "Last year's Revenge of the Sith, a critical failure and immediate flop..."

Just putting in the prediction now, after hearing again about how it "redeems" SW after AotC... and remembering that when AotC came out, the critics raved about how it "redeemed" the franchise after TPM. I sense a pattern here.

At any rate, I happily thumb my nose at critics anyway--if I can't make up my own mind whether or not a movie appeals to me without help from a reporter on a glam beat, I don't deserve to have an opinion--so it's nothing to me, except that it remains highly irksome to see the slurs on TPM and AotC every time I turn around.

I feel a bit...: cynical cynical

I'm not sure if it's a case of "that which is popular is automatically suspect", or just that it makes better press to rip than to praise.

Cynic? Not so much that as maybe borderline masochism. ;) *hands Fern some chocolate*

Even though you're probably right, I find myself not caring. We have shiny new canon to play with, and the room to subtly (or not-so-subtly) gloat over how many things we ended up being right about when the bashers were wrong. ;)

Well, yeah (except that the second Anakin attacked Padmé, that gave them ammunition to say that we were wrong and they were right, which is another major reason I wouldn't have done it, of course ;)). Gloat, gloat. Except that he actually let semi-triangle stuff into the script and let it out into circulation before he wisely cut it out, but since he chose to cut it, more gloatage.

Your icon is funny, but what the heck is crashing? *is having images of the "netherworlds of the Force" as a very cluttered attic, with things falling over*

I'd venture my answer, but I'm sure Fern would rather I don't go into that territory in her journal. ;)

Ooookay. I think I'll stick with the attic then.

Yes, probably safer. ;)

Right up until Anakin trips over me.

Oh, this isn't even about the movie. This is about the moron critics who will claim a year from now that they never said nice things and the movie flopped. (Just like the "immediate flop" TPM.)

Of course, though I like RotS, I still prefer TPM and AotC.

Exactly. What annoys me most about this sort of situation, which occurs very often in Entertainment Weekly, is how casually the critic disregards a film that, only a few months before was generally well-received. I remember clearly the excellent reviews that poured in when AotC came out. And then later, all of a sudden, it was boring, shoddy, clumsy, and a box-office failure, according to countless articles. And then everyone started to believe it, too. I just don't understand it. I wouldn't be surprised if RotS gets negative backlash in a few months, as well.

I've just got to tell you that I'm going to see it tomorrow!! Hurrah!

I wouldn't quite say AoTC redeemed TPM. But given that RoTS just made my boyfriend cry, I think I can safely say it redeems the first two.

I liked the first two better.

Fair enough.
