A new word, long meme - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003

A new word, long meme
I think SW can contribute a new slang word to the dictionary. Alas, "obi" is already a word--a sash, I believe--so I'll have to go with the unused "obism," definition: Something that's true, as long as you're not using words as the person listening understands them. (Eg, from ANH--not RotS, no spoiler--"Vader betrayed and murdered your father," meaning, "Everything your father was, was destroyed." Or in my own experience, "I'm finished with my assignment, Mrs. H," translated to, "I've done exactly as much of this assignment as I have any intention of doing.")

Edit: gehayi recommends making a verb of the last name, Kenobi, as in, "I kenobied so-and-so about it..."

I like that.

Anyway...

Like Dobby, trying to communicate with Harry in CoS by saying "He Who Must Not Be Named" instead of "You-Know-Who"... as if Harry would ever have actually made that connection.

Waitaminute - I always assumed the motivation behind He Who Must Not Be Named was the same as for You-Know-Who... just avoiding saying Voldemort. If it's not Voldemort but Tom who "mustn't be named", then why is that? And what's the significance of Dumbledore's calling Voldemort Tom at the end of OotP?

And why am I still sitting here in my pyjamas trying to wrap my brain around something that probably doesn't matter anyway, when I should be outside painting the trailer?? Hmmm.

Dude, ignore me, I'm an idiot. Not He Who Must Not Be Named, therefore still Voldemort who must not be named. I'm leaving now.

Psychological warfare.

If I were a meme, I'd be: a lot shorter.

Honestly, doesn't this reveal something at the end, like The Animal is how you see yourself, The Piece of Furniture is how you see your home, and The Body Part is your true love?

I may have to write the corresponding analytical meme now.

It didn't have anything at the end in lothi's version. It was mostly something to kill time.

You could always turn his last name into a verb--"to Kenobi."
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2005 08:12 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, I like it. It rolls off the tongue.

"Ah, I kenobied the prof about my assignment... I'm totally not even started yet, but I said I'd been putting in a lot of library time. I mean, he doesn't need to know I've been playing Runescape there."

A synonym for equivocation, then.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 24th, 2005 08:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
Slang for it, more or less.

Way to verb a noun.
drakyndra From: drakyndra Date: May 25th, 2005 06:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Personally, I have always called it "Certain-Point-of-Viewing."

As in, "Don't you Certain Point of View me!"

And yes, I have actually said this in RL. I am that sad.
drakyndra From: drakyndra Date: May 25th, 2005 06:47 am (UTC) (Link)
EDIT: How I use it is generally meaning telling the truth, but in a way that is meant to be misinterpreted. I don't think I need to give you an example...

Kenobied, heheheh. Love it. Though most of urbandictionary.com is bullshit, I suggest you submit it nonetheless.
