Still plugging away at the fic, which is tackling the age-old… - The Phantom Librarian

Still plugging away at the fic, which is tackling the age-old question of why Vader never checked the Tatooine phone book.

I went to a colleague's wedding reception today, and I have to say, it was really a lot of fun. Anyone planning to get married, I'll highly suggest thinking outside the box and going for a place with games (other than the old throw the bouquet thing). This one had bowling and pool. It's great, because you only sort of know the people at a wedding reception, so frequently nothing suggests itself for conversation, but a game=automatic topic.

Anyway, just checking in.

Um, wouldn't he have just assumed he "killed" Padme before the kid had a chance to be born? He wasn't entirely rational on the subject.

I meant in looking for Kenobi, who was hiding under his own name on a planet Anakin knew he was familiar with. Then again, that goes to my theory that Anakin has no interest whatsoever in killing Kenobi.

Oops, sorry

Perhaps it was like our local phone book - put together by Hutts so it is nearly impossible to find anything easily? Obi-Wan was probably listed under big adverts for 'Massage Parlours' or 'Tentacle Repair Technician' or something.

But maybe in the back of his mind, he just didn't want to find him. For whatever reason.

*snorfle*

I think Vader shut the door in his head to his life as Anakin, until Ben forced it open again by showing up....

Yes, exactly my thought on it.

Probably just the thought of going back to Tatooine gave Vader cold sweats - all the sad things that happened there in his life. I noticed he never set foot on Tatooine himself in the three original movies - he sent his stormies down, but didn't go himself. Why not if not because it was too raw for him?

I mean, Luke was listed under his real name!! Vader's agents could have found him pretty easily if he'd cared to look. But he didn't want to do it. The Force? Subconscious barrier?

Hee. Or any old phone book, really. Clearly he knew that Obi-Wan had surived long enough to leave him for dead.

I think it's because it's one of the three planets in the galaxy he never wants to see again (the other two being Mustafar and Naboo). Too many bad memories. Beyond that, I'll buy the 'he doesn't really *want* to kill Obi-Wan' theory.

Maybe Obi-Wan was unlisted? :) Or maybe "Kenobi" was the galaxy's equivalent of "Jones", so a listing for "Ben Kenobi" wouldn't have told Vader anything.

Completely off topic here, but I've almost finished reading ROTS and had to tell you - I found myself thinking while I was slogging away at it last night how much BETTER it would have been if you'd have got to write it. Even given the limited pallet that ROTS was, I KNOW you'd have made us care about each and every character.

Pretty pointless post, I know, but I thought it was worth letting you know. :~)

Word to that!

I think Vader wanted to bury Anakin's past as deep within him as possible. Tatooine is filled with nothing but bad memories. I think it would have been the last place he expected Obi-Wan to hide. It's like hiding in plain view, in a way.
darth_pipes From: darth_pipes Date: June 6th, 2005 06:35 am (UTC) (Link)
BTW, if Vader did know where Obi-Wan was, do you ever get the idea he would have been the kind of guy to get drunk, call his hovel on Tatooine, and leave rambling messages?

"I hate you! Oh Force, Obi-Wan...I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to kill you."

If done right, it could be pretty funny. ;)
sonetka From: sonetka Date: June 6th, 2005 08:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, he would totally have done that. Remember in "Catch Me If You Can" when the super-successful fraudster always calls the detective on Christmas Eve because he's the only person he can really talk to? Maybe whenever Vader is on the outs with Palpatine (or on the eve of a major holiday - what holidays does the SW universe have, for that matter?) he gets really sloshed and uses up all of Obi-Wan's memory on his answering droid, or whatever.

"I mean, I'm cool with trying to kill me after what I ... no, I'm NOT! You said you loved me, and then you LEFT me! That's what everyone does! My own fuggin' WIFE did the exact same thing; I mean, I shouldn't have done the whole Force-choke on her but it wasn't like I PLANNED it. Master? Do you think that really could have killed her? I didn't sense it, but maybe...I dunno, everything was so confused. Oh Force, I killed her. I KILLED PADME AND THE BABY! Master, please, I don't deserve to live after doing something like that! Force, I hate you! *Burrrrp*"

Sorry, it was just too tempting :).

That totally made my day. Thank you.

I know that this is off topic, but... I just finished reading "Family Portrait" and WOW. Your fiction, as ever, is beautiful, and I loved seeing the Anakin/Obi-Wan relationship. It's wonderful to get more insight into those two characters, especially Anakin, as the movies focus primarily on his tragic flaw(s). I love seeing young Anakin growing. I guess the point of this post, besides telling you once again that you are fabulous, is to ask whether you are planning to do any more prequel triology behind-the-scenes fics in the near future? If I ask really nicely? Or just incessently? :)

For that matter, why didn't he sense Obi-Wan, Luke, and Leia through the Force. It seems to stretch across galaxies, after all. And surely he would also have sensed that Padme died for the same reason, but the pain from the severed limbs might have blocked that.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: June 6th, 2005 01:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
Much as I'd like to hold that up as evidence that Padmé didn't die, I'm more inclined to think that the Force just doesn't have that good of a "homing beacon" function.

"The Force is not Google!"

Snerk. Yeah, I can see a Jedi/Sith Master having his patience ruffled when a padawan was trying to google people through the Force. Through the Force, things you will see... but you can't use Boolean operators!

The fact that it happened while the first major battle with the Rebellion was picking up steam probably kept him from doing much, but given Vader (not even his Anakin self), I think he'd have been highly displeased. It would be rude, not to mention counter-productive (charred corpses rarely hand over their droids).

Ben and Luke were both ex-directory.
