Wasting time for my country
According to the paper this morning, American jobs are being lost at a record rate because we're just too darned productive. Productivity increases, fewer workers are needed, jobs disappear. Productivity is bad.

So, purely out of patriotic duty, I'm taking a breather from a list of bad series I've been ordering from. Sweet Valley can take a hit for the country.

Question for people in other parts of the country (or world): Is the, er, spicy novelist Zane impossible to keep on the shelves, or is that purely a local fad? When I first came here, it was Omar Tyree. Now, he's passe. It's all about Zane. Whatever happened to good ol' blood and guts? When I was a teenager, back in the stone age, I got my spicy scenes mixed with good, healthy graphic gore in Stephen King and my other various horror novels. What's wrong with kids today, just reading sex by itself, with nary a monster in sight?

Soooo... when I write fanfiction at work, I'm actually HELPING people?

I can get behind that.

If it's any consolation, the only 'Zane' I've heard of is Billy Zane.
And, as far as the 'skipping the story and cutting straight to the sex' goes, it's really just indicitive of the instant gratification age don't you think? Time probably plays a big factor too; people are prepared to devote 5mins to reading a PWP but cannot be bothered putting in the effort for something longer.
It's the fast food of fiction! ;~P

I live in the Washington D.C. area and Zane is really popular with young black women here. His (?) stuff is basically PWP. As to why it's popular, I'll bring up a conversation I had once with an older African American man who recalled how the old Motown and R&B songs were about love, but today's rap/hip-hop got "right to the point." Sex as quick gratification is common in that music, genuine love is rare-to-nonexistent. I guess they just reflect the culture and people's attitudes.
