Um.... - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Okay, my "minor spoiler" period is over (as can be ascertained by a change in default icon, which I'm not using on this post because of my confusion), but I just realized, I have no idea how long before I can use my default icon in various communities and on other people journals and...

This is very frustrating. The story is out in the world, and has been for a week, which I certainly consider long enough, but I'm just not sure what to do. The icon is for celebrating, but...

Aargh, I just realized it changed on all the posts I've made.

EDIT: Thanks for the loophole, though I'm now cutting the top part of the post so people who don't want to know won't know. ;)

Back to partying, now.

Maybe don't make it your default icon just yet, and just use it wherever it's not going to be considered a spoiler.

Done, but I have no idea what the official length of time is before it's not considered a spoiler anymore in the general world. Will people jump on me if I do it after two weeks? A month?

You know, I agree with the poster below. You're a known Remus/Tonks shipper; they don't have to know it has anything to do with the book! I reckon you should go ahead and start using it. :~D

As for what the official spoiler-free time is... I have no idea. I've got in trouble online from saying stuff about the original SW trilogy! Shyeah... 30rys wasn't enough. O.o

Remus and Tonks get together? Awesome!

Oh, as far as spoilers...I'm still working on the book, so don't tell me who dies or anything. But things like Remus/Tonks (so sweet!) or Ron/Hermione...I don't consider that to be, well, spoiling spoilage.

I'm really looking forward to going back and reading all the spoilery posts, though :)

FictionAlley Park is allowing people to stop using spoiler tags after August 15. So, if you use their reasoning, a month is the length of time you should use.

As for my own input? You are known as a Remus/Tonks shipper in the fandom, so using a Remus/Tonks icon probably wouldn't get you shot. Particularly since the text in the icon is definetely not so particular that it could be derived solely from HBP.

Well, I've seen it, and I don't think it's really that spoiler-y. After all, you're sort of known around the fandom as the R/T shipper, so anyone who hasn't read will just think it's another OTP icon.

Haha, love your icon! And the coolest thing about that is that nobody will have any idea it's a spoiler. Because it's so bizarre. ;)
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: July 23rd, 2005 07:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
That's a workable loophole. There's nothing particular to suggest that the text is a direct quote...

I was going to say the exact same thing. :)

I have no idea how long you can wait. I think a week is more than reasonable, personally, especially with something that's as minor a plot point as R/T is.

My icon, on the other hand...but I've actually had it since before the PoA movie came out.

I think my problem is that I'm completely outside the "spoiler" mindset--for myself, I'm always grubbing for information, and don't really care when I get it as long as it's accurate and double-checked. I like readings the second or third time through more than the first, because I can relax and notice stuff, since I already know that troublesome "What's going to happen next?" business. But I know other people aren't the same, and I know that some, to my utter bafflement, won't even look at things that have been officially released (eg, the covers and so on) before reading the book. Because I can't seem to wrap my brain around that, I never know if something is too minor, or too soon, or what.

The "what's going to happen next" tension drives me insane, to the point where I actually often read books beginning-end-middle-end again. I read the last few pages of HBP first, just to double-check that the spoilers I'd seen were accurate. My family and friends all think I'm crazy, but I kind of get the feeling you won't, hence my admitting it now. ;)

I went and looked at the LJ after you recommended it (it was you, wasn't it?) and then drooled for approximately ten minutes over the detail and the gorgeous fantasyness and R/T of it all.

Thanks! :)

I now enter the next demographic group, and must check 35-50 instead of 18-34.

Well, I haven't read it. The books don't get to every country on opening day. Of course I'm obviously spoiled otherwise I won't be posting here - but not everyone wants to. So... just think of the little people.
