HBP images I'm surprised we haven't seen
There are always plenty of Dracos to go around, and plenty of Snapes, and a reasonable number of Remuses and Harrys. There's a particular scene involving sunlit days that has had a lot of art devoted to it, and a dude with sharp teeth that I wanted to see and really got my wish. These are some images I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen much of, 'cause they're interesting. Not requests. Well, if someone's looking for something to draw, I guess it's worth a shot, but mostly it's just HBP images that struck me as very visual, and I'm surprised to not have seen much of them. I'm just as interested in discussion about why they haven't gotten much visual attention, if anyone has opinions.

Merope Gaunt. This chick has got to be pretty funky looking, with her eyes looking in different directions as she leans out a window watching handsome Tom go by. She's such an interesting look... I'm surprised that hasn't been drawn more. Or maybe I just have weird taste.

Luna commentating. Hilarious scene, and you can just see her there, gaze wandering around noticing the oddest things, while an increasingly frustrated McGonagall tries to take the megaphone.

Harry goes after Mundungus. Slams him up against a wall, accuses him of stealing Sirius's things. Lots of action there.

Tonks and Remus in the hospital wing. That's a gimme. So's

Molly and Fleur in the hospital wing. With the ointment, glaring at each other over Bill's bed, or after Fleur starts applying the ointment, when Molly is just watching her.

Malfoy stepping on Harry's face. Or the threats before hand while Harry is lying there helpless.

Tonks and her new Patronus! 'Cause, you know. Dude.

The battle by the barrier at the stairs. Lots of angles on this as everyone but Snape is thrown aside.

Harry doing his detention. Seeing card after card with his father's and Sirius's names on them.

Draco on the Astronomy tower. I've seen some Dumbledores and lots of Snapes in that scene, and I've seen lots of Draco crying in the bathroom. But the image of him standing there, wide-eyed, holding his wand on the helpless Dumbledore... that one sticks with me.

Harry and Ron skinning sprouts at the Burrow. While the twins devil them. Just a fun image.

Harry saving Ron with the bezoar. Another good, action-y scene.

Harry revealing the still-sealed bottle of Felix Felicis. A good scene where he manages to surprise both Ron and Hermione.

McGonagall bracing herself in the Headmistress's office. Looking at the newly hung portait of Dumbledore before going around the desk, when makes an odd gesture to prepare herself.

Just odd thoughts.

She's also done a couple of other HBP drawings already, Morfin Gaunt and Dumbledore visiting Riddle in the orphanage are in the same LJ post as the Merope drawing.

Malfoy stepping on Harry's face.

I've seen two good ones of this: one by reallycorking and one by djinniyah.

Potterpuffs did Luna commenting. But I'm too sleepy to find the link.

It hink the caladan_dd one is from OotP, when she's hurt, not from HBP, when she grabs him by the robes and shakes him.

The only vaguely artistic thing I can do is calligraphy, and you have inspired me to try to recreate the cards with James' and Sirius' offenses. If only I knew how to properly age things.... Google time!

I've only seen one Tonks and Remus in the Hospital wing so far. I think it's by Nasubionna:

I just happened across a Tonks and her Patronus as well. I can't find where it originated from but if you go to the foot of the Werewolf Registry message boards, it's there by someone called Foxx Laverinth.

I would imagine that part of the reason we haven't seen the more action oriented scenes is because they might take a bit more work to pull off. It could be that people are working on them but they're taking a bit longer to do.

Maybe? Meh. I don't really know, I'm not a REAL artist, I just fake it in Photoshop. :~p

I did a sketch of Merope - nothing fancy, just trying to get my idea of her onto paper.:)

-Jen, trying to get her muse back (he went to Scotland, saying that the Midwest was too bloody hot :D)

Great Work

See, this is why I love having you as a live journal friend. You have so many others. If I posted a similar list on my lj, I'd get one or two responses -- you get a whole slew of links to some really great art. I was looking for a good Tonks/Remus in the hospital wing too -- and anything with Fleur and the Weasleys would be really helpful as I brood about my Fleur/Bill fic. Also, I hope somebody comes up with a Harry going after Dung pic because I had him doing something very similar to Draco in a fic that will never see the light of the computer now, and when I read that scene I was like, "See! Not so out of character for sixteen year old Harry!"

Anyway, thanks for being inspiring!

I'm sure I'll get to some of these when I do my ACAD tour through the book.

I'm just as interested in discussion about why they haven't gotten much visual attention, if anyone has opinions.
Hee, I have some. :)

and asherr said:</i>well i started on a "Harry goes after Mundungus" pic but although i've got the angle of the image and a thumbnail of Dung that i like (hehe), his hat has been fighting me for several hours. i imagine Dung with a a crooked wizard hat that has a wide floppy brim on it. you would think that would be easy to draw but noooo i must have gone through 30some designs so far (a lot of them look like smurf hats with one strawberry shortcake hat 0_o). currently he is wearing a chimney sweep's hat until i can get something better. :( </i>

Scenes with action and lots of people, such as the battle with the Death Eaters, or scenes requiring lots of careful and well-thought attention to background details, such as Merope Gaunt in her ramshackle hut or McGonagall looking at the new portrait of Dumbledore, will take a lot longer than relatively simpler scenes such as Draco/Moaning Myrtle or Several Sunlit Days.
I know that I don't do action well--have you noticed that I avoided it as much as possible in my ACAD series? I also don't do extreme emotion or ugly faces very well yet, so I'm not likely to do Harry confronting Dung because it's presently beyond my abilities for me to put on paper anything even remotely resembling the image I get in my head of this scene.
I have never yet done a really good Dumbledore's office because it requires so much fiddly little background detail. I haven't yet done a view of it with the portraits of the former Heads, though when I think I can manage that level of detail I should very much like to go back and illustrate the scenes in OOTP where Harry and Dumbledore interact with the portrait of Phineas Nigellus.

Another thing is that with the exception of Draco on the Astronomy tower, most of these scenes are relatively minor. These sorts of little scenes are the things an artist might pick up on the second or third read-through, after she's illustrated the major plot-moving stuff. Luna commentating is such a high humor scene that I'd be surprised if there weren't many illustrations of it reasonably quickly, but lots of these other things are the sorts of things I would "come back to" after having done the "bigger" stuff first.
It hasn't even been two weeks yet since the book came out, so I'd expect that most artists are still working through the really high interest images. They'll get to these smaller things later, I'm sure.

As for me, well, I've been on vacation for the last week and haven't been able to do any drawing at all. Otherwise there would have been more art from my pencil up already. My brain is bubbling over with pictures that want to be done.

Where do you get your fan art? I love looking at good fan art, but it's so hard to wade through all the stuff that's, shall we say, less good, that I lose patience and give up.

I read hp_art_daily and hp_art, and that's where I get most of it, though caladan_dd was recommended by leelastarsky, and that's where I got the icon art.

silverhill From: silverhill Date: July 28th, 2005 05:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm not a very visual reader (maybe because I'm a fast reader). But if an image doesn't come to me, I don't take the time to visualize it (whether it's a character or a scene). Generally, I just read with an extremely hazy visualization of what's happening.

So it's funny that some of the scenes you mention are ones where the image burst into my mind crystal clear while I was reading. Draco stepping on Harry's face and McGonagall in the office especially.

:)

I know this post is four years old, but... meh.

The Tonks/Lupin hospital scene was pretty much the first fan art I tried, and as such it's not all that good, but... http://severelylupine.deviantart.com/art/I-don-t-care-77076163
