Bored now...
Meme stolen from missambs

1) Name a pairing (in a fandom I'm familiar with) and I will write one line of a story for it.

and/or

2) Ask me my opinion on any character from any fandom, and I will say. If I do not know the fandom, I will say what I think I know based on fannish osmosis.

(My addition: You can also ask my opinions on any controversies involved with the fandoms, or plot events or whatnot... I won't limit it to just characters, unless that's all people feel like asking.)

Fandoms (or at least original canons) I'm familiar with: HP, Star Wars, Buffy/Angel, Quantum Leap, LotR (book only), Stephen King, Orson Scott Card (Enderverse or Alvinverse), Chaim Potok

Faramir/Eowyn.

Not HP. That's bizarre, for me.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's a ship I would have liked to see more of in canon (though Tolkien, bless him, was not great with this aspect!).

Okay, fic line. Let's see.

Ithilien, Eowyn thought, was nearly paradise... unless of course, one was trying to ride a horse.

(Leading into Faramir doing some serious landscaping of his principality to accomodate his wife's hobby.)

There are in-laws, and then there are in-laws, Han thought when he saw the all-too-familiar blue glow in his wife's sitting room.

As odd as this is, how about Draco/Moaning Myrtle? ;)

2) A fandom controversy -- what's your take on the recent H/Hr ship implosion?

1. If she had the slightest idea who I was reporting to, I suppose she'd refuse to listen, so I have to be careful; I can't go back to having no one to talk to.

2. I'm sick of it. JKR couldn't have been any plainer than she was, both in the text and in interviews, short of saying, "All right dears, this is the plan..." I'm surprised she was as eminently polite as she was about, actually. I'd probably just refuse to answer it, or totally explode at the complaints. There are legitimate things to criticize set-up-wise, but something that's been set up structurally for several books now? No. Just, no.

What do you think of Dawson Leery? You think he was whiny and overly analytical or just a dreamer? hehe. Sorry, first character who came to my head~
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Is that from Dawson's Creek? I've only watched the show like, once, and I wasn't paying attention. They all seemed pretty whiny to me.

fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
You've... seen a lot of it?

Well, I didn't put any restrictions on. And what the heck, it's a challenge.

Our blood is our blood, our flesh is our flesh, and in the dark, they return to the single thing they were before we were crudely sundered.

See, I was hoping that you'd include Firefly in your fandom list, so that I could say Zoë/Wash. :)

Instead, I'll just ask what you think of Valentine Wiggins.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
Alas, I've never even seen Firefly. No hostility, just never got particularly interested.

Anyway, Valentine.

While she bored the devil out of me in Ender's point of view ("Oh, my dear, angelic sister!"), she's actually pretty interesting inside her own head, as she's, in her own way, as pragmatic as Peter. She makes noises about disliking Demosthenes, but as soon as she's out of Peter's scheme, she becomes Demosthenes again. She is willing to help Peter not because she doesn't know he's trying to manipulate her, but because she's looked at him and realized that he's manipulating her with the truth. I felt for her a lot in Children of the Mind, when she realized just how boring she was to Ender when Valzinha started to fall apart, but I love her marriage to Jakt, and how she tries very hard to make it work--a lot harder than Novinha seems to, despite the fact that Novinha and Ender start out with a lot more in common.

1. Ahhh, someone beat me to Pince/ Filch. In that case I choose Fred/ Angelina. It is Fred, right?

2. Since I tend to relate to him, I choose Ron.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
1. With the Triwizard Tournament going on, there was no Quidditch, and all that energy had to go somewhere.

2. I love Ron. I don't really relate to him, particularly, but he's a nice, generous kid whose faults are run of the mill faults. He's a teenage boy, and a good sample of that particular species. Too loud, too crude, and too superficial sometimes, but when push comes to shove, he's reliable and kind and brave.

...I have read all your responses prior to this one and been delighted with so many of the lines. I think I should put this post in memories to dive at just in case you ever ask for an hour-fic idea again!

As if you don't have enough to do, I know. :)

I'll be good and not mention Founderpairings, since I know you have a single version of them that doesn't really admit that sort of thing. Hmm.

Sam/Rosie.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:42 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, in my version, Rowena's the only one who's not pairable. Hufflepuff's got tons of kids but is now a widow, so plenty of space there, and Slytherin obviously has to be paired, to create the fine and upstanding Gaunt family. I haven't given a lot of thought to who their mates are.

Anyway, Sam/Rosie:

"A girl just knows these things," Mother said definitively, and Rosie despaired, as she had no idea how she was meant to know them, or what it would feel like if she did.

Enderverse

Bean/Petra

What do you think of child!Ender?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2005 11:52 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Enderverse

1. She wasn't as quick as he was, but then again, no one was.

2. I love child Ender. He was my window into that universe, and I identified with him totally. I love the fact that he can't imagine the consequences of not winning, only that he knows they'll be bad. And his weariness and depression on Eros were very well portrayed. I missed him when he got a little sanctimonious as an adult.

1) Going to be different, sort of: Alvin/Peggy from the OSC Alvinverse

2) Do people like Professor Snape for the same sorts of reasons that they liked Mr Spock?

fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 12:13 am (UTC) (Link)
1. Alvin reckoned that he'd spent enough time telling Peggy how he didn't want her to take care of him like a mother would that it could be a mite awkward asking her if she wouldn't mind nursing him through a cold he couldn't quite get hold of.

2. It's hard to say, but I don't think so, as the characters are quite different. Spock wasn't a morally ambiguous character; I'm not sure that Snape fans think of Snape as morally ambiguous, though he is. Spock was coolly logical for the most part, Snape puts up a front but is absolutely driven by irrational emotions. I would think Spock fans would be more drawn to Remus, who is a bright guy who likes to keep control of his emotions, but who is forced by biology to be totally instinctual on a periodic basis. Then again, I don't really know Spock fans all that well. Maybe the fact that they're both skinny white guys with dark hair who make poor hairstyling choices is enough.

1. Peter/Petra (Shadow series.)

2. What do you think of Percy after book six... family relationships and such? (I know he's really minor but I still like him.)
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 12:56 am (UTC) (Link)
1. (Sheepish admission: I never got past the third Shadow book; they didn't do it for me. So if there's actual Peter/Petra, I don't know about it. Is there? If not, I'll go ahead and write a line. If so, I don't have a knowledge base for it.)

2. I'm not sure what to make of Percy. I was absolutely certain he'd find his Gryffindor courage and face up to his mistakes, go back to his family, and make a decent man of himself... but he didn't show any signs of it in HBP, did he? :(
mistralcat From: mistralcat Date: August 24th, 2005 12:22 am (UTC) (Link)
1. Xander/Faith (Because there's so much good stuff with this pairing out there, but that doesn't mean I don't want yours! Greedy, aren't I?)

2. Have you read Pastwatch by OSC? If so, what do you think of the idea of being able to "watch" events in the past? What event in history would you most like to "watch"?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 03:20 am (UTC) (Link)
1. The sky over the savannah was wicked dark at night when the moon was down, and Xander was just a black cut-out against the Southern Cross.

2. It's interesting, but not likely to happen if they ever do discover a way to travel in time. I think I'd want to watch the arguments over the Declaration of Independence, and also the actual battle of Troy.

1) Xander/Sweet (the demon from the musical episode)

2) Weasleys: Percy, Fred and George. Lotsa controversy over who's supposed to be good guys and who are evil/selfish/sociopaths. Any opinion?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 03:23 am (UTC) (Link)
1. If you have to hook up with a demon king, you may as well have one with a kickin' soundtrack.

2. Sociopaths? The Weasleys? :eyeroll: Percy can be a real git, but the Sorting Hat doesn't make mistakes, so he's got Gryffindor courage somewhere. The twins drive me berserk, but they seem to mean well.

Lucius/Narcissa.

Bellatrix Lestrange.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 03:28 am (UTC) (Link)
1. There was always a right way to approach things, a correct face to wear, and Narcissa was glad that Lucius had always understood this.

2. Bella, ah... Bella. I love writing Bella, because she's such a pure villain. I don't mean that she doesn't believe she's right in what she does... she's a total fanatic. She absolutely believes everything; the ideology has overridden everything. That makes her very stable to write--I can definitely count on her.

Colin/Romilda.

And what do you think of Romilda, anyway, one-note annoying fangirl or does she have potential for more than that? Has she learned from or even found out about her love potion fiasco?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 03:35 am (UTC) (Link)
1. "You know, that's really not going to work," Colin said, raising an eyebrow at the box of chocolates Romilda was sneaking upstairs.

2. I'm not sure what I think of Romilda, though I doubt she found out that Ron took the love potion--Ron would be mortified by it, and I doubt he'd talk about it. I've noted before that her name is an anagram ("A random evil"), which makes me wonder if JKR is going to do something with her.

1. Ron/Lavender

and

2. Kingsley Shacklebolt
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 03:43 am (UTC) (Link)
1. Her hair always smelled like Trelawney's classroom, and after a week, Ron came to respond to her in about the same way--grit his teeth, make up some nonsense to turn in, and put up with Hermione's cold glares about the whole subject.

2. I think Kingsley's great--the fact that he was heading up the investigation on Sirius says that he's a very good Auror. The fact that he used his judgment and decided to help hide him instead says that he has a strong moral sense, and is solidly clever. He's just cool.

Talisman/ Black House (Dark Tower universe)

What do you think of child Jack Sawyer vs the adult?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 04:02 am (UTC) (Link)

Re: Talisman/ Black House (Dark Tower universe)

Jack as a child is one of King's best child characters--resourceful, but imperfect, scarred and flailing around, trying to figure out how to be a hero. I think he carried well into adulthood, actually, though the style Bleak House irritated me too much to care.

2. What is your opinon of Snape after HBP? Do you think he's really evil or that it's all just some sort of elaborate plan of Dumbledore's?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 04:12 am (UTC) (Link)
I actually started a Pippin/Diamond story once. I like them. Let's see..

1. Pippin knew that Sam and Merry--and really most of the Shire--didn't care for Diamond, but he didn't care.

2. I did a whole post on my Snape thoughts. ;)

Am I too late?

1. Cordelia/Xander

2. What do you think about Cordy as she was in Buffy S1-3?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 24th, 2005 04:27 am (UTC) (Link)
1. "Oh, no," Cordy said, looking dubiously at Xander's means of transportation. "I don't think so. I'm not going out with you anymore; I don't have to check out your cheesy summer vacation wheels."

2. I adore Cordy in Buffy; I like her much better there than in Angel, where she got a little irritating. In BtVS, I liked her because she was so superficial that she was almost deep, and because she could kick butt without going gooey. When she left, the series lost some of its flair, because it also lost touch with Buffy's flaky side.
