A birthday drabble for jiminyc
Okay, it's longer than a drabble. jiminyc has now learned the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, and that deserves a drabble, neh? She wanted young Dora Tonks having a birthday party.

London. May 5, 1980.

"Honestly," Mummy said, pulling a bright ribbon from around a package and tying it into Dora's hair next to the other one, "next year I'm going to give you my manky old socks. You just want the paper and ribbons anyway." She tsk-ed and kissed Dora's cheeks.

Dora kissed her back, then ran to the mirror while Mummy and Daddy started to clean up. She now had four pretty ribbons in her hair--a red one and a yellow one and a pink one and a purple one. There were piles of paper all around her presents, and she picked up the largest ones and put them on the floor, like her own special floor to walk around on. Someday, when she went to Hogwarts, she'd learn to make her special floor move with her.

"What's this? What's the girl of the day doing way over here?"

Dora looked in the mirror and grinned at her cousin Sirius, who was dropping down to sit at the edge of the paper. His friends Mr. Lupin and Mr. Pettigrew and Mr. Potter and Mrs. Potter were helping Mummy.

"I'm looking at my ribbons," she told him.

Sirius pulled one up and inspected it. "And fine ribbons they are, Miss. Don't you think so, Lily?"

Mrs. Potter came over. She was very pretty, and Dora had asked if it would be all right to have her long red hair sometimes, and she'd been wearing it all day today. She knelt beside Dora and straightened the ribbon Sirius had moved. She had a very big belly, as there was a baby inside of it, and it brushed against Dora's arm. "There," she said. "Perfectly fine. Though with that pink, maybe you'd best go with your own pretty hair! My sort of hair just doesn't go with pink and purple very well."

"I like it!" Dora said. "It all looks very bright."

"That's a word for it," Mrs. Potter said, smiling.

"I like it, too," Sirius said. "And really, what else matters?"

Dora giggled. "Mummy, am I pretty?"

"You're beautiful, Dora," Mummy said, rolling her eyes.

"I think it needs more," Mr. Potter said, bringing over several pieces of bright wrapping paper. He tapped them with his wand, and they turned into cloth, which he started draping on her shoulders. "We've got some orange now, and some green, and some..."

"James," Mrs. Potter said, "you are never dressing our child."

He stuck his tongue out at her.

"I think it's quite fashionable," Mr. Lupin said from the table, where he was using his wand to get rid of a particularly sticky ice cream melt.

Sirius pulled her around and tapped the cloth, which attached up into seams and made a dress. "There," he said. "It's a Dora-dress."

Mrs. Potter put her hands over her eyes and shook her head.

Dora twirled over to Mr. Pettigrew, who had sat down on the sofa, and tripped over his foot into his lap. "Do you like it, Mr. Pettigrew?"

"I certainly do."

"Is it like a butterfly?"

"You do like your butterflies, don't you?" He smiled. "Yes. It's just like a butterfly. You look like you can just flutter right away."

Dora flapped her arms--the sleeves of the dress flapped up and down as she did this--and fluttered over to Mr. Lupin. He scooped her up and carried her back to the mirror, where everyone was sitting down on pillows they'd Conjured on the floor. "Nymphadora Tonks--"

"DORA!"

"--fashion model!"

She noticed that he had a patch on the elbow of his robe, and touched a piece of the cloth that was in just the same place on her dress. "Look," she said. "We match."

"Oh, not quite," Sirius said, pointing his wand at Mr. Lupin. The patch turned bright pink. "There."

"That's going to require payback," Mr. Lupin said, shaking his head at Sirius and letting Dora go so he could turn the patch back.

"I liked it pink," Dora said.

Mr. Lupin rolled his eyes and tugged at her hair.

The grown-ups all started talking to one another after that, Mummy and Daddy joining them when they'd finished up in the kitchen. Dora wandered from one to another of them, sitting on laps and listening to them, even though she didn't know what they were talking about most of the time. They laughed a lot together. She looked at Mrs. Potter's belly, and wondered what it would be like to have someone smaller than she was running about with her.

After a long time, she crawled into Daddy's lap and fell asleep. There was a fuzzy time later when she got hugs and kisses, and then she was upstairs in her own bed, and when she woke up in the morning, everyone was gone. Her birthday dress was just paper again, folded up neatly on the chair by her table with the ribbons on top of it, and a pretty new green glass butterfly was hanging in the window.

Dora smiled, got up, and started putting the ribbons back in her hair.

*sigh* Oh, if only! That's an adorable image, though, of Harry playing with Dora as children. Mind if I tuck that away for my "James Potter isn't killed" AU idea (that'll most likely never be written anyway...)?

And Happy Birthday, jiminyc!

Oh, lovely! I'm curious about what's going on in Peter's mind all this time, though. How could he give all this up for evil? Dora is such a delightful child--I really like the way you write her interactions with adults. It's easy to see how she could grow up into the Tonks we love.

Yeah, the adults are really her only friends, I think.

As to Peter? He needs a severe headthwap.

Peter fangirl moment:I want your Peter as an uncle. He's just perfect, and the idea of fluttering away like she was never there, great to work with and flesh out into something darker.

Ok fangirl moment over: Your Tonks rocks. Bright and bubbly and just full of life, definitely can see adult Tonks in her. The way she interacts with all the adults, specially Lily and Lupin, is great, and calling them all Mrs. and Mr. is the cutest thing ever, and makes sense.

Thanks! I dithered about putting Lily and James in, but figured, why not? :)

Yeah, specially since they belong with the rest of MWPP.

Cause coincidences are cute, a Peter fic I stumbled on named Butterflies. I can't see the reason for the title though. :(

Awww...this was just lovely!! I do love your little Dora! She's so sweet.

I particularly love her pointing out the patch on Remus' robe as making them more alike - that's a very Dora touch. And wondering what it would be like to have 'someone smaller than she was running about with her.'

Thanks so much for writing this!!

That is really sweet! I loved little Dora (what a cute nickname for her). I like how shes fascinated with the color pink, even as a little girl.

Dora has long red hair at one point in OotP, doesn't she? :)

Anyway: Hi! I haven't commented before, but I've read (and loved) your fanfiction for a while now. And so I wondered if it's ok if I friend you?

I just wandered by, and had to say "squeeeee!" So cute! I'd love to think they all had a few good times like that, before things went so terribly wrong.
