Contemplating NaNo, considering Ebay
Chapter 6 of Shades ("The Unforbidden Forest") (with a bit of smoothing out here and there) has been posted at the Quill.

So, I'm again staring at NaNo. Last time, I got just-so-far-and-no-farther with a story which I started to hate by mid-month. But it's still so very tempting to try. I have an idea (several things kind of conflating into a story), which was going to be in a "real world" setting, but which in the end I think I can do better as SF. It's more of a situation than a plot, though, which doesn't bode well for quick writing. I have to contemplate it deeply. I think my problem is that I don't know how it ends or who it's about. I just know the setting.

I'm starting to unpack the stuff my mom sent. There are a couple of unopened toys from Taco Hell that were released during the Special Edition SW release in '97. I wonder if I could get anything on Ebay. Who knows? Plenty of silly stuff sells there. I also have an unopened set of action figures (Princess Leia and R2), but the card is bent, so I'm reasonably sure it's as worthless as if it had been opened, so maybe I'll just pop it in my doll case.

That's sort of what I have, too--and my suggestion is get to writing it. At some point, you'll decide whether it's something to stretch to 50,000 words or not, and if it's not--well, you'll still have a lovely piece of writing to work with.

I have to mentally nail down some details--the whys and wherefores of the thing, as well as the whos and whats of it. But yeah... I'm leaning toward it.

Never mind the whys and wherefores
Love can level ranks and therefore....

/OT silliness

I think you should go for it, even if the story doesn't end up being something you can stretch to the full wordcount.

I had a dream once about a girl who was half-human, half...werehuman? (wolves that turn into humans instead of humans who turn into wolves), but before I got very far at all, I dreamed a flashback about how her parents met and what happened to them, and woke up before I could dream any of the plot.

So now I have this huge backstory, a setting, and half a situation, but no plot, only the narrowest sketch of a main character, and no idea what the difference between a normal human being and a half-human, half-wolf-thing actually is.

So yeah, very frustrating.

I had a long and extensive dream this morning involving a journal I was keeping without my own knowledge (but a_p_ had read it and told me about it), a con in Paris, and destructive psychic powers which could be photographed in action (they show up as an Avada Kedavra like green light eminating out from the unwitting source).

Dreams are a good source of things, but they tend not to be plotted. The notion of wolves that turn into humans is an interesting one, actually. Maybe rather than have the half-wolf, half-girl as your lead, you could center it on the mother? She's investigating something, but this mysterious man appears every now and then who has answers? Just a thought. It's a good scenario.

I'm leaning that way...

I love this story. I'm a bit late coming to the party. I read Shifts last week and now I'm reading Shades. I have to say you have such an amazing handle on both Remus and Tonks. I look forward to more.

Welcome aboard. :) And thank you very much.

Even if the card is bent, you'd still get more for it than a set of opened action figures because there's a guarantee that it comes with all the parts. If it's the Leia and R2 set that I'm thinking of, it'll probably go for around $10. I'm not sure, though.

It may be worth a shot. Ten dollars is ten dollars I don't currently have. I've never sold anything on Ebay. I'm mostly just curious about the thing.

I'm told the best time to have auctions end is around 9-10 Eastern on Tuesday night. Or something like that.

I'm looking on Ebay for how much the Leia/R2 set goes for (obviously, I have too much time on my hands), and I'm seeing it for a lot less than I've ever seen it for in RL. You might be better off finding a comic book and action figure store and see what they'll pay for it.

Yeah, I honestly don't know if it's worth the trouble. Shrug. There's still room in the basement for stuff.

I know what you mean. It's too much work to find a good story that'll pay for it, and the majority of people on eBay are willing to sell stuff for $0.87 so it'd be hard to sell it at ten dollars.

I'd keep it, too. It might become more valuble one day, since it's part of a special four piece set (the other ones were Leia with Han, Luke and Wicket).

Maybe NaNoing at the library would be more your thing. Have you seen this?
