Developing some weird and selective middle-aged blindness
Well, I was going to do fanfic100 with Regulus and Sirius, and I looked at the big grid for like ten minutes and didn't see them. But it appears they were there. I just apparently glazed over it several times. I have no idea whether the person is doing them as brothers or as slash (I'm always a little afraid to click on stories about brothers, because incest is a big squick of mine and I'd just basically like to avoid it, and unfortunately, I have a feeling that many times I could click over, that's what I'd get), but apparently it doesn't matter. Everyone else I like is already taken, so I guess I'll just skip it. And consider getting new glasses when I finish pouting. :p

I finished printing Shifts last night, reading on and off as I went because of my slow printer. It's been awhile since I read parts of it. I'm actually kind of pleased with Tonks in it--I'd forgotten how insecure she was at the beginning of the relationship, and her little "not-cheerful Dora" scene where for some reason I decided she was deliberately choosing to be cheerful most of the time because she didn't like not-cheerful Dora and would forcibly shake off anything resembling a bad mood. It ends up working pretty well with what happened in HBP, I think. (I like noticing things like that in stories of mine that I haven't read for awhile. When I read "Your Very Own Dora" at The Witching Hour, I noticed that I had ickle!Dora doing just fine with most of the nasty upsets in her life, but when her Mr. Lupin said he was leaving, she totally freaked. I didn't intend it to mean that she would always consider him her last bulwark of stability or whatnot, but, hey--it ended up working better after HBP than it did before it!)

It's always fun to read old fics and see how well they've stood up to the test of new canon. I've been tempted to actually go through my (few) fics and do a commentary pointing out where they've done well or not done well against the prequels that came out after them... I just always stop myself because it feels self-centered. And I could better spend the time writing new fic anyway. :~D

It really does feel self-centered. But if I'm in a situation where I'm re-reading them anyway... well, I can't deny that it also sometimes just feels neat. :)

So, that just inspired me to go back and read "Your Very Own Dora" again, and I like it just as much as ever. I've always noticed it, but this time I really felt the weight of Remus having just lost all three of his brothers at once. Being the only one left would be very lonely even without the added factor of betrayal, so I'm glad that in your universe he had Dora around to help him still feel loved and needed.

That's a shame - there should be more genfic with those two - it'd be an interesting dynamic. Interesting, too, to see your take on them as youngsters, because I can imagine we'd recognise aspects of Dora in there. The Black family really intrigue me, but I'm hugely squicked by incest, so don't tend to look for Blackfic much (not that it's all incest-fic, but...)

For some reason, I kind of like Blackcest that is not Sirius/Regulus. I think it has to with the way they're so Victorian ... it makes Young Sirius/Bellatrix somewhat plausible. And, y'know, angsty and such.

With the cousins, I can deal--that's very upper class, marrying one's cousins, among the aristocracy, and I don't doubt that it was regularly practiced. If Regulus had lived and stepped away from his pure-blood fetish, I could see him considering his younger cousin Nymphadora as a reasonable wife. (Weird that it's got the total opposite connotation here--it's what low-class hicks do... though I'd note that the Gaunts come off as hillbillies. In other places, I don't think it has either connotation; it's just part of life.) It's the sibling-cest or parent-cest that really turns me off.

(Though the cousin thing takes some mental getting-used-to. My cousins' girls called me "Aunt" for ages until we decided it was too confusing, and as I was an only child, I always thought of my cousins as ur-brothers and ur-sisters anyway. But if you've got a family that fetishizes "pure blood," as the Blacks do, then the psychology of cousinship would have to be different. But the incest taboo among siblings and between parents and children is pretty darned universal.)

I don't really have a problem with relationships between the cousins, particularly; it's the sibling-incest that I'm not so comfortable with... Thinking back to HBP and Harry thinking Tonks might have been in love with Sirius - I actually wasn't bothered by that at all! Amused, but not squicked.

You know, I thought fanfic100 was allowing the same pair of characters to be done by different people as pairing and gen in some cases, but I may have been taking it as more easygoing than it really was.

Yeah, I got an e-mail back very briefly informing me that it didn't matter how I was planning on doing them; if they were claimed, they were claimed, end of story.

Bleah.

Meh. Use the Big Damn Table to write about the brothers as brothers. You don't have to join fanfic100 to do that.
