So, I did my first bit with Remus's parents since Lines of Descent… - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003

So, I did my first bit with Remus's parents since Lines of Descent got obsoleted. (Here.)

I normally try for consistency between my stories, but in the case of LoD, the entire fundamental principle was knocked out from under it--there's just no way to retcon naming the wrong werewolf as Remus's "sire," or to twist things around so that it can still seem like it could fit. It's a game. Sometimes, you lose, and that time, I lost.

But it was actually kind of fun taking my lumps on that and reimagining the biting scene. I don't normally go back and radically re-imagine scenes, mostly either just leaving obsoleted stories alone and going with the new material for subsequent stuff, or just dropping out if I can't figure out a good way to retcon. In LoD, Remus goes up to a caged werewolf and tries to pet it through the bars, and has everyone fretting over it. He blames himself for being stupid years later. Now that we know Greyback was lying in wait for him, the idea of him blaming himself for carelessness becomes a much bigger statement about his character--the worst he's likely to have done is wander off somewhere. Now, I'm imagining an exciting race against the clock as Greyback drags him away from his parents' home, his mother and father frantically coming after him, casting spells as they try to slow Greyback down before he can get their son away from them forever. While I'll miss guilt-ridden Elizabeth Phelan, I also like the new idea of Remus as a victim of a particularly nasty werewolf, and his family rescuing him. In fact, I like the new scene in my head better than the old one, though I doubt it would write out particularly well. It's playing like a little movie in my head.

Shrug.

And a lovely movie it makes, too. Well, perhaps lovely isn't the proper word, but it is very vivid. I liked the old version, but I like this new one too. And Elizabeth Phelan must necessarily be diminished, but she could still make a cameo as a bit of a mentor figure.

A very interesting idea from harriet wimsey. I rather like the suggestion that Elizabeth 'could' still appear in your later fics as a sort of mentor - perhaps she herself was bitten as she tried to save a child from Greyback? If she still wasn't successful in saving that child, would she still feel teribly guilty, even though she herself had been bitten in the attempt? Could she then become a trusted friend of the Lupins as they tried to cope with young Remus after his bite?

It's always SO hard trying to work new canoninto your fics and general line of thinking, so you have my sympathy!!

this reminds me..
Is it wrong or stupid that I'm trying to make myself read transformation/purely werewolf-related and werewolf cult scenesand fics because 'if i don't reda bouthat side i'm essencially ignoring or worse not accepting a side of Remus that just can't be voided.). and I'm actually skipping that kid of stuff because it's in a genre that mostly scares me to death (tortured souls, flesh and blood and all kinds of very vivid detailed descriptions of going after a prey or in thecase of storie abouthis first bite, something like what you describe a bove which already made me shiver.)
It just feels very odd that I like remus-related stories except when theyre' about the wolf itself...

I'd like to point out that Remus's "..and if I hadn't been so foolhardy..." doesn't necessarily refer to his being bitten by a werewolf. He could have meant that he was foolhardy to allow or possibly encourage his friends to become animagi and then run around with him on full moons. It's not clear if he means "If I hadn't been bitten--which I wouldn't have if I hadn't made some foolhardy mistake..." or "If I hadn't been bitten and I hadn't been so foolhardy as to let my friends use me as an excuse to become illegal animagi..." I've often pondered which of the two he might have meant. My own idea of when, how, and by whom he was bitten pre-HBP took the former interpretation, like yours did. But since HBP blew that out of the water, I've begun to lean toward the latter, which would mean that Lupin doesn't necessarily feel guilty for being bitten by Greyback.
