Awake
Well, this is annoying. I've been sleepy all day, but now that it's bedtime, I'm suddenly, like, "Wow, let's have a party." Grr. Oh, well. At least I go in late tomorrow.

I don't feel like writing the next Shades segment tonight (no good excuse, I'm just being petulant with myself), but I do feel like writing something. Anyone want a missing scene drabblish kind of thing from any of my fics?

EDIT: Ah, finally. Blessedly sleepy. Not sure what it says about my writing that I put myself to sleep, but hey, not arguing.

I'll see you folks tomorrow. :)

Krum and Harry, comparing notes about being Seekers.

Minerva as Griffyndor seeker.

Luna and Snape, discussing the possible virtues of Crumplehorned Snorkack horns.

I missed the "from my fics" part, but maybe Minerva could be telling Tonks about it...

Oh, I second the suggestion of Minerva as Gryffindor Quidditch star!! Or anything with Minerva as a student, really.

I can do Minerva. Quidditch, I'm iffy on, but I'll have a go.

---

Being a Seeker suited her.

She rose to the top of the pitch, above the others, watched the game from a great vantage point, saw every play... and then flew like the wind itself. She'd been a Chaser third year, but this was always the spot she'd wanted, and now she intended to prove she deserved it.

Below her, Ravenclaw Beaters were all over her team's Chasers, and her Keeper--the team captain, of all things--was abysmal.

One goal, two, three...

She hissed to herself and glanced across the field to where her counterpart, a sixth-year called Miranda Yaxley, was circling lazily. She ground her teeth.

Ravenclaw scored another goal.

Something flashed golden in the sunlight near the middle of the pitch. Miranda saw it at the same time.

They dove.

Miranda's broom was faster, and she had more experience, but she was cautious. She dove shallow, in a slight circling pattern to keep from plowing--the way any good flyer knew to do it.

Minerva leaned forward, tipping her broom nearly vertical.

She dropped like a stone. She could hear faint screams from the stand above the wind in her ears, but she didn't care. She passed Miranda.

Grabbed the Snitch.

And jerked herself upward just before the ground drew her in, spinning her rival in mid-air and crying out victory to no one in particular.

I really enjoyed all the R-T challenge stories about Remus and Tonks' family. Anything else you could write about them would be very much appreciated. I would particularly like to see how you introduced Daniel Morse into the picture.

Cheers, TDU

Oh yeah, I'll second that one.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, 2016.

Daniel was too furious to speak to the child, which wasn't fair. She was in a bad situation, and it wasn't her decision. But things had been unraveling for three weeks. He hadn't been able to touch the plague that had been ripping through the villages--it was nothing he'd ever seen before, and it seemed to have no discernable cause or respond to any known treatment--and when he'd sent for help, he had expected at the very least another doctor. One. He'd hoped for a whole staff.

A teenage girl who might have started uni--if she was older than she looked--was not what he had in mind.

He didn't want to say the wrong thing to her, so he just turned on his heel and walked back to the mud hut where he'd been working with two patients when Niambi had run in to tell him that an English girl was waiting outside. As there hadn't been any flights into Kinshasa--he checked daily--he'd expected that the word "girl" had been a mistake--she'd be a seasoned woman who'd been working in the area.

Of course not.

The man on the blanket screamed as a gash appeared in the skin of his chest, let out a torrent of blood, and then closed again. He began to pant. Daniel knelt down beside him and raised his head, holding a glass of water to his lips. "Drink."

The man drank.

Daniel set down the glass and turned to his other patient, only to find the small girl kneeling beside him, her hands smeared with blood as she pressed them flat on his chest, against another of the appearing and disappearing wounds. "You'll be all right," she said.

"Sorcière," the man said, then leaned back and fell asleep.

Something flashed.

Daniel was confused for a moment. He was suddenly outside the hut, though he didn't remember getting here. He had an idea that the men inside were sleeping peacefully, but every time he tried to grasp how they'd got that way, he began to think about the weather.

The girl was dubiously inspecting a hosepipe, a tin cup in her hand.

"The water is safe," Daniel said, the first words he'd spoken to her since her arrival. "It's all quite new. Probably cleaner than London plumbing."

She filled her cup and drank half, then poured the rest over her head. "It's very hot here." She turned around and the sun caught in her light brown hair. She had high, delicate cheekbones and her forehead curved up into a widow's peak. She looked like she might blow away in a moderate breeze. And she looked familiar somehow, though Daniel could not, for the life of him, place where from. "I'm Mira Lupin," she said. "We got your message."

"Daniel Morse. Who is 'we,' in this case? No one I sent it to would send a child."

She gave him an irritated frown, and if there was a moment he fell in love with her, he supposed that was it, though he wouldn't realize it immediate as they traveled from village to village together over the next four months. "I am not," she said, "a child. I am an apprentice Healer."

"A what?"

She sat down on a bench and let out her breath in a frustrated way. "I wish they'd sent more people."

"So do I." Daniel filled a cup of water for himself, and drank it in one gulp.

"No, I mean, I can't do this by myself. You need to help me."

"I beg your pardon?"

"I can't just keep doing memory charms on you."

"What?"

Mira took something from her bag--a light-colored bit of wood--and pointed it in Daniel's direction. "Aguamenti."

His cup was suddenly brimming with water.

"Let's start again, shall we?" she said.

Daniel & Mira

Thank you. Of course now you've whetted my appetite I just want more!

I don't know what it is (Daniel's childhood obsession with epidemic diseases, given that I teach a seminar on the Black Death?), but I've been totally obsessed (in a very polite, not-stalking-fictional-characters way) with Daniel and Mira ever since you mentioned them. They're the first fic characters I've ever run into that make ME want to write fic, and I'm an inveterate reader-only. But, you know, wow, any time you feel inclined to write more of their story, put me at the head of the line!

(Please note, this whole comment is a fawning testament to your ability to create real and interesting characters.)

Thanks! I may play with them here and there in the future.

Gah, that happens all the damn time. Is why I'm on the internet at 1:15. Stupid body.

I'll take a drabble! Shorter, therefore many many times more likely to be read by me. (not that I don't like long stuff, it's just that pesky RL getting in the way of things. And not the Remus Lupin RL, the Real Life RL. The bad one.)

Okay. Random event then. Kind of after Sirius runs off to James. Well, actually more than "kind of." It's the next day.

----

Regulus looked over his shoulder, expecting Kreacher to show up in the fireplace at any minute. He spilled the cloth sack of books and papers onto the Potters' kitchen floor.

Mrs. Potter looked at him kindly. "You're Sirius's brother?" she asked.

He nodded. "I've brought some things he left."

"He's upstairs with James. Third door on the right."

"Right." Regulus dragged the sack to the kitchen door, then stopped. "Is he all right? I mean, is he... he was fuming a bit... do you know when he's coming home?"

"He's all right," Mrs. Potter said. "You'll need to talk to him about the rest."

Regulus heaved the sack over his shoulder and trudged up the stairs. He didn't have long. Mum was off trying to convince Dumbledore to block Sirius from school, and Dad was trying to get the Wizengamot to force him to come back home somehow. Kreacher was just sleeping. At best, Regulus would have two hours. He didn't want to chance more than one.

He knocked on the door Mrs. Potter had indicated, and heard music and laughter coming from inside. The door opened, and James Potter, grinning, turned arond. "Yeah, Mum, sorry we were..." He stopped. "Oh. Regulus."

Sirius appeared behind him, looking confused. "What?"

Regulus dropped the sack. "I brought your books. And some extra clothes. Mum's probably going to start burning things. She's very angry."

"Oh. What do you know. I do have something in common with Mum."

James looked between them, then turned to Sirius. "I'll go help Mum in the kitchen," he said, and slipped around Regulus to go downstairs.

"When are you coming home?" Regulus asked as soon as James was gone.

"I'm not. Congratulations, you're the heir to the house."

Something cold and jittery seemed to jump up from Regulus's stomach and land in his lungs. "I don't want to be heir to the house. I want you to come home. Mum and Dad are really furious."

Sirius looked at him sympathetically. "I'm sorry, Reg. I didn't mean for you to get the whole blast of it."

"Well, who else is going to?"

"I'm sorry. I'm surprised they let you come here."

"They didn't, and you're not telling them. Or anyone." Regulus pushed the sack further into the room with the toe of his shoe. "Why do you have to be like this? It makes everyone unhappy."

"Because there are more important things in the world than making Mum happy," Sirius said. "Given what makes Mum happy, I'd have to say that pretty much includes everything."

Regulus could feel his brother getting ready to work into another full-blown rant and just shook his head. "I wish you'd come home, Sirius," he said. "I have to go."

He left without trying to talk anymore, and got home long before Kreacher woke up.

Thanks for this. I love the idea that the brothers still had 'something' between them, and that Regulus really just wanted his big brother to come home.

This is great. I have to say, one of my favorite things in your writing is how you deal with family, especially estranged family. Have you written anything dealing with Percy since he left the burrow?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: March 9th, 2006 07:26 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, he has a couple of spots in the interludes in Shifts, and there's a sidelong view of him via Penelope's life in Unraveling, but I haven't done anything directly about him.

Damn, that was me. Sorry it's so late - I was in NY w/ no computer access.

But yeah, I really did love it. For something so short, there's a lot you managed to get across. Dialogue and characters and everything were just perfect.

Hmm. Could we get some Ted &/or Andromeda PoV of either first realizing there was something between Remus and Dora and coming to terms with it, or dealing with him leaving her? That would be lovely.

"Accio wand!" Ted yelled, running in just as Andi aimed at the photos. A burn mark trailed up the ceiling as the wand flipped over on the way to him.

She turned on him furiously. "Don't do that."

"I won't if you won't."

She sat down on the love seat. "They're copies," she said. "I just used a duplicating charm. The others are still in the albums."

Ted raised his eyebrows and looked at the twenty or so pictures of Remus Lupin on the table. They did have the new, shiny gloss of copies. He was scurring for the edges of most of them, looking alarmed.

"Er... why are you burning copies?"

"Because I'd regret burning the originals. But I'm bloody well going to burn something."

"Does it do any good?"

"I don't know. You stopped me before I started."

Ted handed her the wand. "Blast away."

She pointed it at a picture of Remus by their Christmas tree, holding up some trinket Dora had made for him when she was nine. The picture dropped the trinket and ran. It didn't help. The picture went up in smoke.

"So... does it do any good?" Ted asked.

"Oh, yes. Try it. Auntie was right bitch, but I can see how this would get addictive."

Ted aimed his wand at a picture of Remus asleep at the table. The image looked up and blinked blearily. Ted lowered the wand. "I'd rather not," he said.

Andi shrugged and burned another, then said, "Spoilsport. It was more cathartic before you couldn't do it."

"Personally, I'd just like to find the real one and break a bone or two."

Andi looked at him skeptically.

"What?" he said. "D'you think you're the only one in the family allowed to lose your temper when someone tramples all over Dora's feelings?"

Andi leaned back abruptly, throwing herself into his open arm. "I can't believe this," she muttered. "Remus! We were treating him like family long before... I can't believe he would do this to her. It's... unacceptable."

Ted forced himself not to smile at the unexpectedly prissy word. Andi had always been cute when she was trying to be proper. "I suppose Dora would object if I were to hit him."

"I don't know if you've noticed, but our daughter is not entirely rational on the subject of Remus Lupin."

Ted looked at the ashes of the picture Andi had burned. "I can't imagine where she gets that from."

Oh, this is great, thanks! You can tell they still like him (obviously, as she's only burning copies), but that's part of why they feel so upset--they've been betrayed in a way you can't be by someone you don't care about. And yet they still can't bash him in front of poor Dora.

I have temporarily joined the ranks of the awake, after having laid down for "a brief nap" at six o'clock and waking up at 11:30 p.m. So much for all the evening chores I had planned.

If you feel like doing something drabblish, I'd love to see a little bit more of Anakin at Hogwarts. :D

I wouldn't mind a glimpse of when Dora (and Andromeda) first find out the truth about Sirius, post GOF. You start "Shifts" with Remus, Dora and Sirius all heading for GP ...
