The secret lives of characters
Waiting to hear back on a bunch of things, so I'm in a holding pattern here. Re-read some BtVS TWoP, and noticed that the recappers really like to guess that various guest actors, or guest characters, are gay.

How come they never guess anything else? I mean, yeah, gay's a good secret life to postulate. But how come they never guess that they're, like, closet nerds? Or Otherkin? Or secretly really like Disney movies? Or still want to be astronauts when they grow up? Or belong to a Reform sect of the Church of Elvis? C'mon, dudes, I'm bored--I want some variety and amusement in my baseless speculations! :p

In the interest of that, I'll make my first House speculation: he has a secret stash of GURPS dice and manuals, and sooner or later, we'll see him in garb as his character, having to suddenly rush to the hospital in the middle of a game. His GM will call him during surgery--or possibly a lumbar puncture to test for lupus--to ask what he wants to do about the demon in the cave. And there will be gnashing of teeth by the masses when they decide that he's ZOMG!Satanist! I say that with the absolute certainty of someone who's watched four whole episodes now.

Remus Lupin, of course, was a test pilot in the space program (as moonlitwoods discovered), but everyone knows that, so it's hardly a secret.

Who else shall we speculate on...? Anyone? Anyone?

Bueller?

I feel a bit...: silly silly

I seem to remember Strega having some highly amusing speculation about the geeky things Angel did in his spare time over on the Angel recaps, which might be one reason why, despite her general negativity, I liked them better than the Buffy recaps. Wish I could point you to them. . .

I think you're right--it's been awhile since I read the AtS recaps. But how much is there to say about a vampire who grooves to "Mandy"?

Of course! Astronaut!Remus is my favorite, as you know. ;)

Someday, I'm going to get bored enough to write that story. And I defy anyone to prove it didn't happen!

Perhaps we could collaborate on something. My imagination has run wild with details since I discovered how Remus spent his time during his undocumented years. ;) Everything from his being blitzed on Wolfsbane and flying to the dark side of the moon, to him singing Rocket Man in a karaoke bar. The possibilities are as limitless as space itself. :D

By the way, I forgot to mention that your or possibly a lumbar puncture to test for lupus comment was hilarious. Of course it would be lupus.

BTW, edited to add your proper credit for that subtextual discovery.

A friend and I actually were just talking the other day about what House characters might be in the HP fandom, and what kind of fan they would be. :P

I think we said House was a F_Wer, Cameron a OBHWF person, Chase had a weird love of Harry/Snape slash, and Foreman shipped H/Hr. :P

And Wilson is that guy who comes in and says earnestly, "Aren't you all making an awful lot out of a kids' book?"

I think that Cameron was a H/G shipper before OoP came out, when all we knew about Ginny's personality was that she was a Weasley and got cutely bewildered when Harry was around. When she read OoP and saw Ginny chucking dungbombs at the kitchen door, though, she was morally outraged, and since that time has shipped Bill/Fleur. (She was thrilled at their final scene in HBP, and, though she doesn't realize she is doing it, she has been surreptitiously eying redheaded patients at Princeton Plainsboro ever since.)

Heh. It's true. Why is there such a tendency for people to make that the secret reason behind everything with characters.

You know, there's actually a funny moment in a later House episode which sort of addresses this. It's in the second season, between House and his ex.

Stacy: What are you hiding?
House: I'm gay.
Stacy: (glares)
House: Oh, that's not what you meant. (pause) Does make sense though. No girlfriend, always hanging with Wilson, obsession with sneakers...
Stacy: (gives up and walks away)

Well, I've always figured the Snape and Lucius Malfoy sneak off to Siouxie and the Banshee concerts, but that's so obvious...

House.

Feh.

I saw one episode and I am so NOT interested in seeing another.
I knew exactly what was going to happen -- they telegraphed it in the music cues.
"Ooooo, here's the sexual tension."
"Aaaaand here's where he solves TehMedicalMystery."

Riiiiight.

No one watches "House" for the I-never-saw-that-coming storylines; you either watch it for Hugh Laurie's delicious snark tinged with pathos, or, if you're so inclined, the slashy subtext. :-)

I mostly just leave it on Tuesday nights and half watch it. And besides, it has Neil from Dead Poets Society in it.

The fact that the man would be fired in about two seconds flat from any hospital he was around--fear of lawsuits--prevents me from having to judge it by the standards of realism. And I look forward to seeing how sex caused whatever the disease of the week is.

Will not make comment about Dumbledore, Tonks, and Blink 182 based off this (http://sharkixland.free.fr/cover/Blink_182_-_Mark_Tom_Travis_Show-back.jpg)...will not...

Wilson is House's GM.

I once did that with West Wing characters and ended up writing a fanfic where Josh finds out that Sam, Donna, CJ, and the President had a Harry Potter book club to unwind.

You know, that totally wouldn't surprise me. ;)
