Happy birthday, Harry - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Happy birthday, Harry
Have I ever mentioned that one of Harry's most endearing moments for me is when he's so delighted at getting his first-ever birthday card? Along with being so happy to have someone to share treats with on the Hogwarts Express, that's one the Harry-moments that just defines him. He's got anger issues, and he tends to make snap judgments, but he's also capable of feeling joy and wonder at the simple things that make life better. That's why I thought the added line in the GoF movie, where Harry goes into the Weasleys QWC tent and says, perfectly sincerely, "I love magic!" was just a brilliant character observation. (That's one reason I'm sort of sorry that the Quidditch games are over, even though they kind of bored me by the end. I love Harry just digging something.)

I loved him in the early books.

I hear you, mousie. I've just embarked on a re-read of the series, and I'd almost forgotten how much I really did like him when he was younger.

I think he's a far more interesting character now, in many ways. But I can't honestly say that I feel the same affection for him.

Funny, that, really. When it comes to real life kids, I usually get along much better with teenagers than with the littler ones.

I like him all the way through, with the same affection, because really... the kid who marvels at birthday cards is exactly the same kid who rages around through OotP--Dumbledore himself points it out; Harry shuts down because he cares rather too much.

Can I quote you on this? In one sentence, you've completely summed up something I've been trying to explain to Harry-bashers for years.

Be my guest. :)

I totally agree re. "I love magic."

BTW, I've always thought it was a bit cool that had I been born on my due date and not a few hours late, I would have been *exactly* the same age as Harry, having been born in 1980. Sadly I missed by one day, though my fiancé is a 7/31 baby, as was my grandmother.

My brother is exactly the same age as Harry. I don't think he's ever read the books, though.

"I love magic" was a wonderful addition. It summed up a lot about Harry so simply.

I agree entirely about how endearing those sweet little moments when he is just so happy for life's little pleasures are. They make me want to give him a big hug.

Silly me, it's taken three years for me to realize that my son was born on Harry's birthday!

Ah! poor, poor Harry, he had to grow up and stop being so sweet.
I love that moment to, he's so cute at times.
Unless JKR decides to go all evil on us and kill him off, which I have faith in her not too. Or I'm 50% sure. :(

"Along with being so happy to have someone to share treats with on the Hogwarts Express"

That is definately one of my faviorites, if not faviorite, I'm a huge fan of the Harry and Ron friendship.

"I love magic" was a wonderfully endearing line. A great sum-up, indeed.
It really is lovely to see him enjoying life, after so much hardship with the Dursleys. Sweet boy. ;P
