Babelfish meme
Ah, felt like amusing myself. Five famous songs (all kind of outdated), translated from English to German, then German to French, then French to Spanish, then Spanish back to English, just for the amusement value, from our friends at Babelfish.

First to guess each correctly (in order of posts gotten in) gets to request a drabble on any subject.

ETA: Dang, you guys are quick. I'll have to put it through more languages next time!

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now hes dead,
Mama,life had just begun,
But now Ive gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didnt mean to make you cry-
If Im not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on,carry on,as if nothing really matters-

Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Bodys aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-Ive got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I dont want to die,
I sometimes wish Id never been born at all-

"Show me a bit more of those knobbly knees," Tonks said, licking her lips. "You know what they do to me."

Remus looked down at his knees. "There's really no more of them to show, Dora. I'm afraid I don't have any secretly hidden knobblier ones."

She pushed herself up to a sitting position, facing him, and kissed his bent knee, then smiled at him. The sun was bright and warm, the sand sparkling, the ocean making hushing noises behind her. The wind came up and whipped through her hair (she'd lengthened it just for the effect). It was the greatest distance she could imagine from heavy-handed Dementor mists and cold hollows of the war, and she wanted to stay here forever. "Are you hungry?" she asked.

"Not especially."

"Mmm." She reached out and ran her hand down his chest, and he smiled and grabbed her hand.

"Come here," he said, and pulled her to him.

She shifted around awkwardly, trying to slip seductively under his arm and ending up twisting his arm back and doing a floppy forward roll, but finally found her way to her comfortable spot against his side. He laughed at her and kissed her as she stretched her bare foot out to dig in the sand.

"Are you happy?" he asked.

She snuggled closer, kissed his side, and said, "Oh, no. Just miserable. You?"

"Oh, yes. Miserable. Whatever was I thinking?"

They sat together until sunset, watching the ocean and listening to the seabirds, then went home together to indulge their misery.

Totally tubular!

I love the agrarian operation.

1. Actual lyrics:
Well life on the farm is kinda laid back
Aint much an old country boy like me cant hack
Its early to rise, early in the sack
Thank God Im a country boy

Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin me a family and workin on a farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God Im a country boy

4. (Correct, see above)

5. Dark in the city, night is a wire
Steam in the subway, earth is a fire
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
Woman you want me, give me a sign
And catch my breathing even closer behind
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do

In touch with the ground
Im on the hunt Im after you
Smell like I sound, Im lost in a crowd
And Im hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line, in discord and rhyme
Im on the hunt Im after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And Im hungry like the wolf

Re: Think I got all five

You got 'em. Three had been guessed first, but yes, number 3 began its life as
Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow sew
Tea, I drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to do...oh oh oh

And 2 was
I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

I was beat incomplete
I'd been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats
Next to mine

Re: Think I got all five

Of course, if you're going by the actual solfege syllables, it goes "do re mi fa sol (NOT "so", so technically, the song is incorrect) la ti do".

Shall I get into chromatics? ;)
arclevel From: arclevel Date: September 6th, 2006 02:51 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Think I got all five

I think the solfege varies. When I took music theory, we learned it as so, and I've looked it up several places since and seen it pretty evenly split between the two.

Re: Think I got all five

Likewise. When we used it in choir the extra "l" was messy to work out a song, especially repeated notes, so we chose to use the simple "so"

Yup.

Without seeing what's been answered already, I assume 1 is "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", and 4 is definitely "Bohemian Rhapsody". 3 took me an extra minute for "Do Re Mi" -- how did "jam" become a turnpike? Best I can do for 5 is "Hungry Like the Wolf", and I can't come up with anything for 2.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: September 6th, 2006 01:35 am (UTC) (Link)
Sequence is
jam->Stau->Embouteillage->Embotellamiento->Turnpike

And no, I have no idea. ;P
xiphias From: xiphias Date: September 6th, 2006 01:58 am (UTC) (Link)
You live in Boston, and you can't understand how "jam" and "turnpike" are synonymous?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: September 6th, 2006 02:08 am (UTC) (Link)
True. I figured it might be that, but I didn't think the word would translate literally that way. Must appreciate whichever language translated it so honestly.
tree_and_leaf From: tree_and_leaf Date: September 6th, 2006 09:35 am (UTC) (Link)
"Stau' is German for traffic jam. I have no idea why Babel didn't go for 'Marmelade', which (confusingly) actually is the German for jam.
From: (Anonymous) Date: September 7th, 2006 02:19 am (UTC) (Link)
They all mean traffic jam, up to and including Embotellamiento. So the "turnpike" somehow manifested itself in the translation back to English.

I'm glad you edited out the strikethough text. It was too hard to read, even though they'd all been guessed. This looks fun, too bad I saw it too late to play.
