Grease
I was watching Grease on TV last week.

You know, there are many jokes made at TWoP and elsewhere about how un-teenage-looking the cast of Buffy was.

Compared to Grease... er, yeah. Charisma Carpenter definitely looked older than high school, but Stockard Channing could have been her teacher. And Jeff Conaway could have been Giles's not-that-much-younger American half-brother. When I was little, of course, all teenagers looked like grown-ups, but as an adult, I figured that each year, those too-old actors would start to look younger, more like someone thought they could pass. They really, really don't.

There are reasons, of course, not to use actual kids, among them the number of hours they can work, but on the whole, I think they've gotten marginally better at faking it!

I watched a 25 years on programme about Grease once. The girl who played (I think ) Jan was prematurely grey and her hair grew so fast they had to colour in her roots all the time. Marti was the only one who was actually a teenager.

Wasn't Marti the one who goy hit on by the DJ at the dance? Kind-of makes that scene doubly creepy.

Everytime I see real high school sophomores and juniors I'm reminded of why I'm glad the kids in Buffy didn't look like high school students - the number of sex scenes they did. I really, really, really don't want to watch real 16 year-olds having sex. Ick.

Yeah--that's just disturbing.

Haha, it's a running family joke how Cha-Cha is the only 30 year old in high school. They do look really, really old. Of course, for Grease, I would say strong, developed voices is a good reason to have older actors.

The local amateur dramatic society has just released their publicity photos for their production of "Grease." If you think the actors in the film looked old . . .

It's actually amazing when they get it right - in Ferris Bueller's Day off, Alan Ruck was 29 but I easily bought him as a high-schooler. Matthew Broderick is perennially boyish-looking, too...

Reminds me of how I tried to fight the 90210 inspired sideburn growing fad by tellun my college age male peers, "You're going to let high school kids dictate your fashion sense?" I think the actress who played bookish Andrea was in her thirties making her actually older than the guy playing the teacher she had a crush on.

On the flip side, John Cusack was only 17 when he made The Sure Thing and had to be emancipated by the producer to film it or something.
