The thankful post
Well, it's Thanksgiving. Gotta do the stuff-I'm-thankful-for post. :)

First, that I'm reasonably healthy, have a roof over my head, have more to eat than I need, a job to go to, and a good education. Sure, I gripe that I'd like a better roof (and one of my own), and four-star restaurants, and a six-figure salary and so on, but you know what? I'm getting along all right.

I'm thankful for...
  • People who come here and actually read my stories. That's amazing and humbling.
  • My family. It's a blessing to be related to this bunch.
  • All my friends, real-life and cyberlife. You're scattered and I don't see enough of you in the real world, but it's good not to be alone.
  • My colleages. Librarians can be a cantankerous bunch, but I just love working with people who love to argue about good books for kids.
  • My cats. Yeah, I'm putting that with the serious ones. They add a lot to my life, even if one of them isn't mine.
  • The Bill of Rights. May we continue to bicker and yell at each other about just how it works for another two hundred years while it just sits there serenely, guaranteeing us the permanent right to continue doing so.
  • The city of Boston. I may have to leave it eventually--so damned expensive and far from the fam--but it's a hell of a good city, and I love it here.
  • The kids I see at work, especially the every day crowd I was making snowflakes with yesterday. Sarcastic and smart and talented.

More general or fluffy:
  • Thank God for writers! Fiction, non-fiction, political rants, snarky conservatives, passionate liberals, science fiction, mystery, fantasy... I can't take nourishment or get through the daily commute without the help of one writer or another.
  • And libraries. Kind of covered on the colleagues thing, but dude, career aside, what would I do without the public library? Thanks to the people who thought up the idea of a place where you can go and check out books for free, return them when you're done, and... pick up more! Free to all!
  • Hollywood. They drive me up the wall half the time, but how much fun would life be without the occasional intrusion of Jack Sparrow? Without Bond blowing things up and stealing secrets, or Luke Skywalker duelling Darth Vader? Dark rooms to sit in with a bunch of strangers all having the same dream for an hour or two?
  • The internet, in all its insane glory. It's like constantly being in undergraduate school, enjoying 20 pages of letters to the editor about the meaning of a stained glass window. Keeps me young.
  • Elections. Even when I don't care who wins. I love election day.
  • Political cartoonists.

Eh, mostly everything.

I have to go roast a turkey breast now.

I think, specifically, that was Benjamin Franklin. And the thought just occurred to me that he was a publisher...
