Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Birmingham AI
Okay, little Miss Unchained Melody. If the judges say stop, then stop. Or if you don't, don't complain about them not being "nice." When they all but have to call security to get you to stop after already telling you that it was a bad audition and you're not going and you don't have permission to do another song, you lose rights to complain about their manners. Also? I just never, ever want to hear that song again after this round of auditions, and I think Simon will never admit to having a favorite song again!

The baby-voiced woman isn't too annoying, and I liked her singing voice. (Heck, if Marilyn Monroe can make it big with a baby voice, why shouldn't this one?)

Tatiana... big voice. No question. But I'm kind of bored with her already.

Diana--Loud voice but is not hitting the notes or anything resembling them. And the dress was... bizarre. But points for not throwing a tantrum when she was denied.

Bernard--cute, cute guy. Voice has too many curlicues, but isn't bad. The guys say yes and Paula says no? Does rain fall up now, too?

Margaret, Big Bird, looks more 62 than 26. She looks like someone's grandmother. Is she strictly there to make Simon cry? Ha, fifty. Glad she 'fessed up. Wonder when Taylor will.

Jamie Lee not-Curtis. With a lovely sob story that we'll hear all year if she makes finals. "Don't give up even if you have a Lifetime Movie of the Week story." But she does "Reflections" better than the chick a couple of weeks ago. We've already had a country singer, though.

Chris--worries that he'll sound like crap. I like that. And definitely doesn't sound like crap. I'm glad he got through. He's funny and quirky and his jokes are at his own expense. And he's calm on the walk out! I like this guy.

Victoria--I actually like the long hair. A lot. Pretty voice, but doesn't sound right for this competition. I can see why they turned her down, but she's nice.

Lakia--it's called a key. Look for it.

Nice "thank you" montage, though I sincerely doubt that it wasn't staged, or that there were actually more "thank yous" in Birmingham than elsewhere, particularly New York, where a lot of people probably audition for a living and know the drill. But of course, we know where the slant is on AI.

Nichole and team--Pre-school beauty queen. Oh, God. The voice isn't bad, except that the melody has little to do with the song in question. Okay, getting better. "No, but come back." Not a bad judgment.

Brandy--delusions, inc. Obviously, terrifyingly awful. Though, "It could be the floor" is a new and novel excuse. And stop when they tell you to stop. And I can't understand a word of her rant. Really, honestly, incomprehensible!

Hollywood cattle call next? Cool.

What happened in Birmingham? (I bet they managed to make us look like shit.)

Makes me think of a billboard I saw here in Montgomery featuring Ruben, Bo, and Taylor with the legend "Alabama... where idols are born".

Oh, no, they're going out of their way to be nice to Birmingham, actually, fawning over it being the birthplace of the three guys, and this time, their montage was of people saying "thank you" instead of complaining. I don't believe for a second that they didn't have the same mix as usual, but they know their bread is buttered south of the Mason-Dixon, so they were overbearingly nice.

Yeah, I really, really liked Chris. Honestly, I didn't love him as a singer, but he was quite good and didn't try to do all sorts of insane stuff with his voice beyond what actually belongs in the song. And he was *genuinely* funny, unlike most of the auditioners. I love his "I look like Christina Aguilera" bit.

I was very amused by Simon (who's been generally too no-nonsense this season) and Randy allowing Brandy to 'try again' -- on the carpet. They were clearly in a good mood.

My fave was definitely Chris Sly, I loved his attitude (and his hair!!! *grins*) and he nailed the song. Definitely cannot wait to see how this kid does in Hollywood. The rest of 'em were pretty "meh" to me.

I'd be happy if no one ever tries to sing Simon's favorite song again (I strongly suspect he'll never listen to that song again and enjoy it). Besides, it really isn't a song designed to show off vocal ability. I'm thinking the few with the talent to sing it can find something better. It's just too agonizing to the world at-large, and probably to the judges, to keep hearing bad versions over and over.

Victoria's singing voice is exactly what I aspire to. She'd be the next American Folk Idol, if such a competition were at all feasible.

I'm new to the show, so do they generally pull crap like their obvious attempts to drive a wedge between the pair of friends who auditioned?

The opening shows--the "gong show" section--usually try to make drama out of what's essentially a cattle call, but once you get to the top twelve, there's not much of that going on, and they get into personal lives mostly in little video clips. I started watching during third season, and there hasn't much of that audition-round needling that predominates in the auditions. I think that, aside from their own entertainment, they're trying to produce something that you'd remember about these guys later on.

That last girls strauck me as someone who had pre-planned her whole fight. I suspect lots of poeple go on their just to try and be the fight that's highlighted.

I'm tot he point where I wouldt' mind if the show started with the 12 finalists pre-picked. The prelim stuff is just dreary.

Also, I used up all my patience with stupid people on TV already this year. *L*

My tolerance for reality show antics was wasted on Celebrity Big Brother, bad pacing on my part, knowing AI was about to start. =P
