Fic verse notes
Oh, look, LJ's back. :) But there's a little empty square on my calendar. What will I do? Well, I guess I could backdate, but that's a little nitpicky.

I am going to jump into a long Teddy-verse next. I want to try something light, so I'm just going to do a first year story, just as soon as I think of a plot. Obviously, I'm backing off of Stray. Maybe, eventually, I'll get back to it, but the dynamic, for me, has changed too much to keep going.

On the bright side, I'm got out largely un-jossed on the little things. (Ted's appearance, the location of the Tonks house--I doubt they'd find that pond in the back garden in London. And, sorry to all those I argued with so arrogantly, Remus apparently would have needed his wand to Apparate, though I still haven't spotted where it's used.) It was just the thematic stuff that I tripped over, and I think that's reparable with Teddy, but I need to get a better look at Teddy to do it. There's not exactly anything confirmed (other than "Dora" and the color of Andromeda's hair), but much of my ficverse can actually... keep going.

YAY!! I am so excited to read more about your Teddy! I've loved your past two stories, thoug i didn't get a chance to comment... and I really like reading your Harry as well... well really i like reading about all of your characters because they seem straight out of canon. So, yes. very good news indeed.

That sounds great! I'm sorry to hear that Stray won't continue, but I look forward to anything you're planning.

With the type of story you write, I think not having much disproved is an absolute triumph and anything confirmed is a complete bonus. I'm glad you've got ome new inspiration with Teddy.

You are envied among fanfic writers. Can't wait to read! :D

I'm glad to hear that you're finding the heart to get back into writing fanfiction, even if you're backing away from the fic you were writing. I'd love to see what you'll do with Teddy, even though I'm bad and haven't read your other fics (my brain is still stuck in pre-OotP mode where Remus is shipped with an OC. :-P)

Oh my gosh, you have a treat in store if you ever start getting hungry for some new "canon"...seriously, the ship starts off very hesitantly, and I bet you'd be geared up for it by the time it happens. and the fics are *awesome*.

And, sorry to all those I argued with so arrogantly, Remus apparently would have needed his wand to Apparate, though I still haven't spotted where it's used.

Same here. Is this based solely on Ron trying to Apparate without a wand in Malfoy Manor, or was there some other reference I missed? Because I really want to know why Twycross never so much as mentioned using wands when he was teaching Apparition in HBP.
From: (Anonymous) Date: July 25th, 2007 11:57 am (UTC) (Link)
My pet theory is that apparation is like many other kinds of magic; it can be done without a wand if you're experienced enough, but it's easier with a wand. The trio are rookies when it comes to it, and Ron in particular doesn't seem to be too skilled at it (having splinched himself twice in DH alone).
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: July 25th, 2007 12:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's based on them all worrying in the Ministry about whether or not the Muggle-borns they're rescuing have wands, because they might not be able to Apparate (apparently even by Side-Along).
snorkackcatcher From: snorkackcatcher Date: July 25th, 2007 01:18 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hmm, fair point. It doesn't actually mention Apparition specifically (just 'OK, all of you who haven't got wands need to attach yourself to somebody who has' -- I'd assumed it just meant for purposes of defence) but as an escape after they get out via Floo because Apparition in and out of the Ministry had been blocked, then yes, that would fit.

Incidentally, I just noticed when I checked that at the end of that fight Harry Side-Alongs both Ron and Hermione, and brings the DE who grabbed hold of Hermione along for the ride. Quite where his wand is in all this I'm not sure (it's lying on the ground shortly after when they're in the wood). However, I also just noticed that in Malfoy Manor Harry makes sure to toss Ron a wand before leaving, so I guess that confirms it. Curses.

I'm not sure about needing a wand for Side-Along, because they get away from Voldemort in Bathilda's cottage when Harry's wand is already broken?

I have a horrible feeling this has been retconned, because again I just took another look at the Apparition lesson and holding a wand was never mentioned. In fact, Draco's hand is said to have 'flown to his wand' when Harry sneaks up on him, so he wasn't holding it then. Same thing with Splinching in that it now seems it can tear away flesh, not just leave the user stuck as with Susan Bones. (And with the Fidelius, come to think of it -- you can just about interpret the FAQ answer to make it compatible with the 'we're all Secret-Keepers for 12GP now' claim, I suppose, but it requires a twisty parse that would do a lawyer proud.)
From: (Anonymous) Date: July 25th, 2007 02:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
True, but as there is no mention of wands being needed for apparation anywhere else in the series (most notably, no mention of wands during the actual lessons themselves) I'm going to be stubborn and assign this as a Flint on Jo's part :-)

I want to read more Ted, so great! :) I'm looking forward to it.

Your ficverse really did survive TDH, although I like to think you'd have given Remus and Tonks slightly more dignified deaths than just "Lupin and Tonks were on the ground, looking like they were asleep." (Because um, having that crammed with various other misc in a paragraph was not nice.)

Sorry you're going off Stray though. :/ But I can see why.

From: (Anonymous) Date: July 25th, 2007 01:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
Just accept that your stories took place in the alternate universe where naming a child Orion instead of Teddy means the parents get to live. And I LIKE that alternate universe (hint, hint [oh, skip the hints and let me get right to the begging and groveling. PLEEEEEAAAAAAZE!!!!!]).

kizmet_42 From: kizmet_42 Date: July 25th, 2007 01:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
I understand that there's a part of the Sherlock Holmes fandom that tries to reconcile the inconsistencies in the stories.

So I think that there is indeed a pond in the backyard of a magical household in London.

I hear Jo Rowling is going to publish an encyclopedia. Long may the fanfic roll!

Of course, original Fernfic will be wonderful too.

I'm excited that you're going to keep writing about Teddy! I hope through him we can learn a little bit about how Remus and Dora were in the days leading up to and after his birth (if you feel compelled as an author, of course).

I'm wondering what thematic stuff you supposedly tripped over you're talking about? I reread the scene in DH where Remus shows up at Bill's to tell him about the baby last night, and the sheer joy that Remus expresses, untainted by any feelings of worry or unworthiness on his part, seems to be the climax and resolution of the story that YOU were writing in Shifts and Shades. If R&T had lived (damn you JKR!) it would have been like an epilogue to their story, albeit a much happier one than the one we got. Hmmm... that makes it seem like I'm not upset that they died, so I'll throw in one more 'Why JKR, why!?!' just for good measure.

I can see why you're backing off Stray for the moment while we all mourn a little bit, but please don't give it up completely. It was such a marvelous story and of course nothing in the GOF canon has changed. I was even hoping you would eventually write the 7th year story from their point of view, tragic ending notwithstanding. I can picture a very solemn moment for all of us, when they both head out from Teddy on their way to the battle, promising that they'll be back soon to Andromeda. Okay, see, I'm sniffling already. Of course it's tragic, but really the story of Lupin and Tonks NEEDS to be written for DH. There's too much missing to not have you fill in the gaps. I'm just really hoping that once you've had a chance to digest the loss, you'll be able to face your stories again. They are so excellent, and I have loved them for so long.

I have these little stories you have churned out in the last couple days (how do you do it -- they're fantastic!!) and I will of course keep reading.

Ditto. If there's any book in the series that could use filling in of Lupin and Tonks' POV, DH is it.

Please do go on with your ficverse. Too bad about Stray, but I can understand the lack of motivation to go on.

I really wish Remus and Tonks had gone out in a more obviously 'glorious' way (if they did not get to survive). The UK DH cover showed the castle under a full moon. I was drooling over the prospect of a wolved-out Lupin and Greyback going at each other during the grand battle. Pity...

About Tonks' house location:

At some point Harry mentions that LV chased him through 3 counties (referring to his travel to the Tonks). So, I suggest you to pick a map of GB, search Surrey (that means 1 county) and look at the surroundings, excluding those that are further than two more. I suppose that, in such a hurried situation, Hagrid went straight to the safety, so you can exclude the counties limiting Surrey.

This is one point where I wish you would go AU. I'm still in denial, dammit.

Wouldn't that make a good series of drabbles? The ceremonial passing of "The Marauders Map" -- perhaps Lily will give it to George's child (provided he/she is a wizard/witch), though not decended from a Marauder, George's line is a part of its heritage too since he and Fred liberated it from Filch.

And then back to Teddy and Victoire's children later (loved his current feelings about Vicky, BTW -- reminded me of the animated movie The Swan Princess a little).

I don't know how this reply ended up on this post -- how odd. And I misspelled descended -- I'm going to pretend the [s] on the keyboard stuck and I'm not a terrible speller.

I have enjoyed the Teddy stories you have posted so far and look forward to more. I would also like to echo some of the previous posts and beg you to continue Stray at some point. I would also love to see DH from the Remus/Dora's POV. I can't help but feel cheated by JKR in that respect. Playing out most of their story (and others) off stage was so unfair.

It can't hurt, but this thing has been getting to me all day, imagining actually following the passage through the veil, the choice not to become ghosts, just having a look at the afterworld, and on the bus ride on the way home, the fateful title word came to me.

But it will be a while.

No matter how long it takes, I bet it will be awesome, in the true sense of that word.

I'm so happy you're continuing on! I've been lurking around here forever, but haven't gotten around to introducing myself until now.

I can't wait to read your Teddy-verse fic - your first story already showed me that you have a firm and excellent grasp on his character. (Dare I say it - perhaps even more so then what was offered in the book?)

I understand not wanting to continue on with Stray, but join other posters in pleading that you revisit your decision from time to time and perhaps come back to it when you feel ready. :) I would go on about the various reasons I loved it, but then I'd have to write an essay. :P So let's put it this way: I'm waiting to see if Hedwig (*sniffle*) ever has that tantrum that readers were joking about in one of the chapters.

Haven't started your Teddy series yet, but once I have more than two minutes of free alone time, I'm definitely planning on it!

Anyway, just commenting to ask if it's okay that I friend; I understand that you're over your limit to friend back, but really I just want the fic! :-)
