Another long Teddy story? Before Safe? :Fern ducks rotten fruit:
Shit. Teddy's third year is coming around in my head a lot more quickly and urgently than Safe. I sat down and summarized the first seven chapters in longhand last night. I just need a couple of set-pieces to come together, and I'm--gulp--set. I doubt it will come at a segment a day, but then again, I enjoyed that, so it might. Except that it probably won't. And I promised Safe! Gar. Oh, well. Teddy has a future, which makes him automatically more interesting to me. Heaven may have more going on than harp competitions, but there's too much power mixed with too little conflict to make it an interesting thing to think about directly (as opposed to their little forays down into Teddy's world, which are seen through his eyes, and while the Marauders are all inventing again, this time coming up with new and different ways to Look Out For Teddy And Harry, it's just not that interesting to write about from their perspective... though pretty fun from Teddy's).

Well I for one wouldn't protest. Teddy is quite an interesting character, especially your Teddy.

But ultimately it's up to you, I'll read what ever you put up. :)

heaven...

Just an interesting aside that I thought of when you mentioned how hard it was to write about heaven... C.S. Lewis had always planned to write an 'Angel' companion to his famous Screwtape letters (about a deamon giving advice to his deamon nephew on how to tempt men away of heaven) but found it too difficult, and thought men in general would find it to difficult, to conceive of the thing properly. ~mary
ps- third year is fine with me... I want to see Victoire when she meets Ruthless. hehe.

Re: heaven...

Oddly enough, other than the prologue (different point of view), one of the first things that happens has Ruthless and Victoire trying to share living space... and, as you might imagine, they have some issues. :p

If you write it, I'll read it. That being said, I'm more interested in Teddy right now. While I like the idea of seeing your take on the last year of Remus and Dora's life, knowing their inevitable fate will make it a painful read. I'd like to revel in the wonderfulness that is Teddy instead. It's not quite denial, but it is avoidance. And it would let us spend more time with the Forest Guard and with Harry (and Teddy's) extended family. What's not to like?
sunshinegirl121 From: sunshinegirl121 Date: September 28th, 2007 10:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
^^^That's basically what I was thinking. Although I'd love to read Safe, the fact that I know that Dora and Remus don't have a future afterwards makes me very sad. I am in LOVE with the Forest Guard and your Teddy, so I'd be quite excited to read your third year. Especially since the challenge entry you did. That was like a cliffhanger times a billion.
gloryforever From: gloryforever Date: September 29th, 2007 04:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
In total agreement of the two above comments. Bring Teddy on!
amamama From: amamama Date: September 28th, 2007 06:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
You won't hear me protesting. Far from it. I'll take anything you feel like writing. *tosses some fresh fruit and freshly-made cookies at Fern*
marycontraria From: marycontraria Date: September 28th, 2007 06:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
No protests or rotten fruit from me, either. I'm looking forward to safe, whenever it comes together, primarily because I love your Dora so very very fiercely. But through Forest Guard I found myself liking Teddy and his supporting cast much more than I had initially thought I might, and so... go for it. I shall read it with great delight. :)

I'll be the grouchy one here. ;-) No, actually I'm quite interested in Teddy's 3rd year...but I do hope to see Safe at some point. *wants your version of that year*

I look forward to reading about Teddy or Remus and Tonks, so I vote with "go with where your inspiration is".

I cannot see any problem with writing more Teddy, who is all kinds of Love and Awesome. And I'd be lying if I said that Teddy isn't helping me heal from The Deaths Of Which We Shall Not Speak, which are still a rather raw patch on my heart.

Deleted/reposted because a crucial contraction was, er, not there.
hermia7 From: hermia7 Date: September 28th, 2007 07:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wheeeee! You know, we don't have the right to chuck fruit at you, unless it's less of a chucking and more of a handing-over-of-lovely-fruit-baskets. After all, you invent lovely stories that keep us amused. I'd rather read more Teddy right now, honestly, even if the Greyback storyline will make it darker than Forest Guard. Like you said, as Teddy has a future, it's still going to be less depressing than the Death Year... (Though I'll rabidly inhale anything you produce!)
From: (Anonymous) Date: September 28th, 2007 08:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
To be quite honest I'd rather hear stories of life. The thought of Remus and Dora's deaths will make the story hard to read. I know I'll enjoy the way you write it. I do love your Remus and Dora. But your Teddy has made it possible to heal and look to the future. I'll be happy with whatever you send our way. If that means daily posts, then all the better for us!

No complaints here!

You said Teddy's 3rd year-- Does anything exciting happen in the 2nd year that we will miss?
cleindori From: cleindori Date: September 28th, 2007 09:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
*gently tosses you a bunch of fresh fruit, with an attached card reading "Write where your inspiration is, we're happy to read it all!"*

:)

To be fair, I do want to see Safe eventually, but I think that if more Teddy is what comes first, Safe will be the better for it.
willowbough From: willowbough Date: September 28th, 2007 10:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Bring it on. Teddy's third year sounded so intriguing from the hints you dropped that I've been on tenterhooks to read it, and hoped--greedily, no doubt--that you'd decide to give it the full year treatment like Forest Guard. Naturally, I'll be glad to read Safe whenever you get around to it, but working up to that canon tragedy must be difficult in the extreme, so no apologies required. I've let a fic of my own--different fandom--languish for months because I knew I was coming up to a point where I had to kill off canon characters and around the time when I left off--just before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays--I just couldn't face writing something that bleak.
demonoflight From: demonoflight Date: September 28th, 2007 10:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hey, that's fine by me! I'm willing to wait for Safe. Hey, I'd never say no to more of your Teddy. Or your Victoire. Or Frankie, or Maurice, or Corky, or Donzo, or Ruthless, or Tinny... even Honoria! More of these kids will be really nice. And... I suppose there would be new characters? I mean, new Ickle Firsties and second years!
miss_polyhymnia From: miss_polyhymnia Date: September 28th, 2007 11:12 pm (UTC) (Link)
No rotten fruit coming from this quarter! Quite honestly, I will happily devour pretty much anything you write. Teddy's story has been so much fun, and after your hints about things from the various challenge entries I'm eager to see what's in store for him. Also, it'll be fun to watch the development of his relationship with Victoire and to see how she interacts at Hogwarts. I'm still looking forward to Safe, of course, but I don't mind the wait as long as there's other good stuff to read!

By the way, this is perpetuallyconfused from the Quill... I've been following your stories on here since Shifts, but I only just got a Livejournal myself last month. So I'll probably be popping in from time to time to comment (though I'm usually only a sporadic reviewer).
cheddartrek From: cheddartrek Date: September 28th, 2007 11:42 pm (UTC) (Link)
Both sound great to me and I'm sure I would enjoy reading either of them. I'm guessing they would be different types of stories in a sense, in that Safe would have the war, deaths, worry about Harry, etc. while Teddy's life comes about after that conflict.
miseri From: miseri Date: September 28th, 2007 11:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
I suggest you write "Safe" from the point of view of ... hm ... Honoria Higgs. As a serious investigative piece, some 20 years after the actual events, piecing together interviews and research and so on. Possibly with some events described twice over as she sensationalises some aspect or other, then goes back and rewrites it more sanely (or vice-versa).
kiwi_kimi From: kiwi_kimi Date: September 28th, 2007 11:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
I eagerly anticipate more of Teddy. What happened to his second year, though?

Since you're writing purely for pleasure (your own, and that you're giving to so many other people), I think you should write whatever you're inspired to. And I'm sure it will be good.
mylla From: mylla Date: September 29th, 2007 12:25 am (UTC) (Link)
*hears "long story"*

*is sold, and needs to hear no more*

Seriously, though, I think I'd almost prefer another Teddy story now. I'm not sure I can take how depressing "Safe" will be at the moment, either.
darth_pipes From: darth_pipes Date: September 29th, 2007 12:44 am (UTC) (Link)
If you have an idea for something before Safe then you should definitely do it. You can't go wrong anyway, Fern, because you're so great a writer.
dorasolo From: dorasolo Date: September 29th, 2007 01:21 am (UTC) (Link)
Two thumbs up for more Teddy! You can always flashback to memories of R/T like the last time -- I wouldn't be opposed!
shiiki From: shiiki Date: September 29th, 2007 01:36 am (UTC) (Link)
I don't blame you for wanting to continue with Teddy. In fact, I'm excited to know that you want to!

Safe or Teddy, you can be sure I'll still be reading!

Smile! You've been having JKR-Café moments!

Dear Fern,

As much as I want to know about the all Remus-Dora-ish, the what's-up-with-Sanjiv-ness and the how-was-everybody-else-in-between-ity that Safe is sure to cover, I must say that I have become enthralled with your depiction of Teddy Lupin and his friends. To say it frankly, well... we all know what happens to our beloved RL/NTL; it was bloody devastating. However, what makes it less so is knowing that their son is very OK. And what we're yearning for, dear, is to know just how he continues going on living his very OK life.

(Added bonus: it's also nice to see how Harry Potter deals with teenage angst -- other than his own, that is.)

So, until JKR decides to write "Teddy Lupin and What It's Like Being the Boy-Who-Lived's Godson" (Scholastic, Bloomsbury & Raincoast, keep alert), we must satisfy ourselves with your not-so-humble, not-the-least-bit-mediocre Teddy stories. And don't worry; the time for Safe will come. In the meantime, not a one of us can get enough of this young Marauder. Thus, please indulge us. : )

Cheers,
Kobe

Go with what inspires you. I think trying to ignore a story that's crowding through your synapses to write the companion piece to DH would just leave you resenting the plot more.

Just like to add my voice to the many already...voiced. You can tell that it is far too early in the morning for me to be writing can't you?

As people have said already, more time spent with Teddy and the gang can't be a bad thing can it? And you've dropped enogh hints about what is to come in Teddy's third year that I don't know whether I can wait to find out exactly how Vicky brings down Greyback, or how Teddy copes and I want to see Honaria and Corky and Frankie and all the gang again, I'm already missing them.

So yes, a story that doesn't have an insanly depressing ending would be good.

Go where your heart tells you to go... I'm really loving Teddy.

Though, if I had my druthers, I would vote for Stray before you start on Safe!

Like everyone else said write what inspires you.
I'm definitely looking forward to Safe, but I think it's going to depress me even more, and Teddy's story sounds much more fun. Besides with all those hints you dropped about his 3rd year and that prisoner of Azkaban are so tantalising! Vicky+ kitchen knives+ Fenrir= Cool!

BTW, I finished that sketch of Vivian I was telling you about. It's not good but if you'd like to see it...

I think this might be the first time I've commented. Hello, love your stories.

Personally I'd love to read Teddy's third year. But seriously, you should write his second year too. Surely he's too like his Godfather not to have adventures in his second year?
obsfuscation From: obsfuscation Date: September 29th, 2007 03:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hey, if it needs to be written now, it needs to be written now. Go for it. I love your Teddy et al, and am psyched to be seeing more of them. Safe will come when it comes, and when it does, we'll all be thrilled to read it. :) I'm thrilled to think of reading Teddy Lupin and the Great Greyback Smackdown so soon after Forest Guard. Whatever you want to write, I want to read. :)

YEEEEES! Fantastic! I'm as madly in love with your cast as I was with HP, and there is considerably moredecent behavior in your stories! You rock! Now I can't wait!

Oh, and are you planning to write the CoS...I mean, the 2nd year story with the room of requirement, after that? *crosses fingers*

Rock on,

-fh

Heh, I honestly don't think anything of grave importance happens during Teddy's second year, unless you're Ruthless, in which case making Beater is of earthshattering significance. ;p I might warm up with a second-year short story, though, if I can think of one.
