A favor to ask from my scattered friends - The Phantom Librarian

A favor to ask from my scattered friends
Our summer reading program this year is "Explore New Worlds." I'd like to put up pictures of some places that people may never have seen (and probably haven't), at least around the room, and if it's cool with the powers that be (and the picture donors), on the program website. Just sort of a casual thing--I'd put up a picture and attach some info about the place.

So, if you come from somewhere other than the greater Boston area and you have a picture, I'd love it if you could post it in this thread. And, heck, if there's anything you want to say about where you are, I'll tape that on the wall or on a set of shelves as well. I'll ask the teens to check with their LJ friends as well and see how many places we can get!

Pictures with people as well as places would be great (especially other teenagers), but adults and landscapes would also be very, very welcome.

(If you don't have a place to stash a photo online to post here, e-mail me at fernwithy@aol.com, if you're interested.)

ETA: Mostly looking for people's home pictures (though I love travel pics, personally)--the idea that I'm thinking of in terms of a collection like this is to explore exactly how wide this cyber-world is, how many places we may "know" people in. (Or know, without the quotes, as I know many people online better than people I know in physical space.) Kinda like a pinned-to-the-wall version of the map meme. I think that no matter how boring home seems to the person living there sometimes, someone who's never been anywhere like it may well find it quite interesting. In fact, totally separate from my job and just for my own interest level, I'm going to start a meme now.

Do you mean places in the US or anywhere in the world? I've been to a lot of places in Europe and I'm a photography freak, so I could send you a lot of pictures from there, if you want.

Anywhere in the world! US, Europe, Asia, Africa, anywhere!

I actually am mostly looking for pictures of people's home places... to sort of give an idea how wide the online world really is, and how far people's friends can be scattered. My first lesson in this came when a volcano went up in the Philippines a few years ago and I realized, "Oh, my G-d! I'm writing a story with someone there! We talk all the time! Is Skysong okay?"

Not entirely sure if this is what you are looking for, but the best I can give you is a link (don't have a digital camera or scanner of my own) but this museum is right on the S edge of my town.

I don't know if this is any use to you Fern, but I'll post it anyway. If you follow this link you'll find some of my pictures from my travels. Some of them will be no good to you and they are all landscapes, but you'll find pictures of Rekyavik, Kathmandu, Mull (in the Hebrides), Snape (in Suffolk), Niagara Falls in winter and some other places that currently escape me. Please feel free to use any that you fancy. If you want better quality versions I'm happy to e.mail them to you - just let me know.

Oh, you've been in Niagara Falls in the winter...

(Slight homesickness. I do miss the Falls.)

Certainly have. When I was still working for my Firm-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named I spent 6 months living in Mississauga, during which time I made full use of my weekends to travel around the place. That was the one and only time that I have visited Boston, actually.

Explore New Worlds... seems like every library does that theme at some point. ;) That was our summer reading theme a couple of years ago.

I do have some photos I took from when I went with an exchange group to Germany three years ago - since I took them, I'm not in any of them (probably for the best anyway), but people did manage to make it into a couple of them. ;)

Berlin - the Kaiser Wilhelm cathedral. I think. All I remember for sure is it was bombed in WWII, and that it's near downtown Berlin. Part of the student group I traveled with is in the bottom part of the picture.
Neuschwanstein Castle (side view), better known as the Sleeping Beauty castle, in Bavaria within spitting distance of Austria. I snapped this walking up the winding hill trail to the castle.
View from Neuschwanstein, looking out at the Alps.
Linderhof Castle, which was built by the same guy who did Neuschwanstein (King Ludwig II of Bavaria), and really is no bigger than a small mansion. (It was seven or eight rooms, I think.) ;) You can see part of my group here too, as well as another group of people who were touring it.

I also have a ton of pictures from trips I've taken to places like California, but I don't have immediate access to them (different comp).

Oh! Oh! Oh! You want a pic of my current home, I'm SURE!!! I'll take one and get it to you as soon as possible :D

In the meanwhile, take a poke around here. That's my unofficial photography site. The folder marked "Prague spring of 2003" are probably closest to what you're looking for.

Want pictures of Bangladesh? Mind you, me and my relatives will be largely hanging around the very brown landscape, which is really not one of the loveliest in the world...

Oh - I see you've edited your post to ask for more 'home' pictures. I'm sure I can find you something that I've taken of London. I spent part of last year taking a photography course so I should definitely have something suitable. I'll take a look over the next couple of days and see what I can dig up.

Here is a picture of a farmhouse near Charlotte.

My website is http://www.geocities.com/chief121371 I've got pictures of my trips to London, Seattle, and Vancouver on there, along with a few North Carolina shots.

akki.myrmid.com/art/caitlinbus.jpg

This is around the metro station in my area--Shady Grove end of the Red Line. DC-region.

Despite the fact that you can't really see much, it really does give a bit of a good feel for the place. Lots of concrete, not too cramped in, lots of small trees.

And that's me, a teenager, about two years ago. Maybe three.

There are opener areas rather closeby, though.

blergh. If you got there before I did, you read more about us than you wanted to know. :) I've since removed the personal details! We're in London -- near Acton, that is.
