Anyone feel like a game of Babelfish?
I do. Only I can put it through more paces at Google Translate, so I'll do it this way:

English-Chinese (Simplified)-Finnish-Indonesian-Hindi-Greek-English. I'll use Beatles lyrics. First one to guess gets a ficlet of his or her own choosing.

(ETA: Google is apparently a far better translator, as several I tried almost resembled themselves in the end. Almost.)

(ETA2: All guessed)

Ficlets:
Carina and the forest tower, for insixeighttime
Fred and George talking to Remus after learning he was a Marauder, for severely_lupine
Dumbldore asking Remus to teach at Hogwarts, for snuggle_muggle
Little James at the Auror division, for sgt_majorette

Re: Wow, really?

Mmm, how about Teddy!verse? More of the Forest Tower stories, if you don't mind? Carina is my favorite to learn more about, but any of them.

(You've write one of these for me before at the Holidays, with Mira telling Carina about the wand-room, but the idea of the Tower - and what it's eventually used for, but it might be too much to ask for a taste of that! - keeps nudging at me and I love it and want to know more!)

Thank you!!

Re: Wow, really?

When Carina had first taken on the task of teaching Finny Potter wand-making, she'd done it with a resigned sigh, assuming she'd have to discard most of them. Finny was, in the world above, an impulsive, annoying, charge-in-first Gryffindor. He seemed to have the attention span of an imp.

Then again, so did Uncle James, and--though no one outside of their little secret society knew it--he'd turned out to be a real wand master. He'd personally armed Carina and all of her siblings, and she supposed that he had made Finny's wand as well, and was probably in the process of making Rufus's for next year. He had taught Mira, and she had taught Carina, and now Carina had passed it on to Finny.

Who turned out to be every bit the natural at it that Uncle James was.

The boy who was now bent over an oak branch would have been unrecognizable to his friends in Gryffindor Tower. He was wearing his thick glasses, which he rarely did there. His red hair, which he kept long enough to tie back severely, was loose and curly, and sticking up in every direction. The tip of his tongue poked out at the corner of his mouth as he concentrated on the spell to infuse the core into the new wand.

"Got it!" he said, leaning back. The wand was unformed and unpolished, just a dowel, really, but he pointed it at their test target (this week, a wanted poster that Aunt Ruth had sent, featuring a man who was robbing Muggle banks) and burned a whole into the center of it.

Carina, who was putting the finishing touches on an ash and unicorn hair wand, applauded lightly. "Very good. What are you using?"

"I'm trying a hippogriff feather from Dapple."

"Experimental cores? In first year?"

Finny waved an impolite finger at her, then started to smooth out the dowel and shape it. "You've all tried hippogriff feathers, haven't you?"

Carina waved the wand she was working on, and seven wands flew out of the trunk. "Of course we have. Good for escape spells and detection, but not very strong."

Finny grimaced and went back to work with less enthusiasm. "What about dragon scales?"

"Mira tried them. Great for protective spells."

"And essence of murtlap?"

"Rots the wood."

"Vampire blood?"

"Ew."

"But did you try it?"

"Once. It was messy."

"Anything good?"

"Your dad once went to the Chamber of Secrets and found basilisk skin. That wand could blow a hole in the world."

"Where is it?"

"It blew itself up."

"Oh." Finny sighed. "Fine. I'll look for something else..."

Re: Wow, really?

:D Thank you! I never thought of the ramifications of the specializations of experimental wood. I love how Finny is trying to think ahead and following in footsteps but isn't discouraged. Thank you!

#1 (need you ask?) JAMES!!!!
I almost just went ahead with one. ;p
--------
When Anthony Goldstein had brought up the notion of adopting an American idea he'd seen while visiting his relatives in New York, Harry had been less than enthusiastic about the concept. The idea of taking the children to work--at least here, where they'd at that time been tracking a dark wizard who was mutilating family pets and threatening to abduct young witches if his monetary demands weren't met--wasn't really at the top of his list of ways to spend a day with his children.

But Anthony had kept at it, looking for ways to minimize the possible trauma, and eventually, Harry had relented. Maybe, he'd thought at the time, there were a few Aurors in the department who would benefit by having their children to answer to.

Still, he'd restricted it to children at least nine years old, and the day before, he'd seen to it that any gruesome evidence was put into a locked room.

Which James managed to break into within fifteen minutes of his arrival.

Harry had needed to interview a witness before he started the day with James, and James had promised not to get into any trouble. Harry was quite sure he'd meant it at the time. But James's attention was easily distracted, and he was carrying the pocket knife Harry had given him last Christmas... the same sort of knife Sirius had once given Harry. Harry guessed that James might have sat still for five minutes before he started looking for doors to open.

He noticed the open door as soon as he walked his witness out of his office. Instead of walking her to the lifts, he pointed her on her way, thanking her and not waiting for a "You're welcome." He went to the storage room and cleared his throat. James's attention was transfixed on a picture of mutilated cat. Harry tried again. "Is this your idea of staying out of trouble?"

James jumped and looked around guiltily. "Sorry."

Harry took him by the shoulder and steered him out, locking the door behind him. "I shouldn't have got you that knife. Hand it over."

"But--"

"Two weeks." Grudgingly, James produced it and handed it to him. Harry pocketed it. "I really didn't want you to see that."

"You don't think anyone would do that to Martian, do you?"

Harry sat down. "No, the, er... the person doing this is targeting... well, homes with daughters a bit older than your sister, thank heaven."

"Why?"

"That, I will wait until you're older to explain. He wants to hurt them, and we'll leave it at that."

James took this with relatively good grace. "If anyone hurt Lily, I'd take care of it."

"You'd have to beat me to it."

"I'd go after them if they hurt Martian or Arf, too."

"But not Al?" Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Al, too. And Kreacher. And you and Mum. I'm eldest, except for Teddy. Teddy could help me."

Harry couldn't decide whether to be touched or alarmed. "Well, let's hope it never comes to that." He examined James's face. "Are you really all right with what you saw?"

James thought about it and shrugged, then sat up straight and said, "Are there any clues? Could I see them? I always guess mysteries before the end..."

Yay! Thank you! I'll give you two options to choose from:

- Fred and George talking to Remus for the first time after realizing that their seemingly mild-mannered professor is in fact one of the Marauders. Or them talking to Remus and Sirius about Maraudery things during down time at 12GP.

- Something between Dora and Remus when she's a teenager, moving from being a girl to a woman. Perhaps when she first realizes that her adorable childhood crush isn't quite just that any more. Maybe she catches herself having her first "inappropriate" thoughts about him (not the sort a little girl would have, at any rate).

Remus was barely unpacked (not that there was much to unpack) when two pops, one on either side, produced the Weasley twins.

"I see you passed your Apparition test," he said.

They ignored this opening. Fred (Remus was reasonably sure) went to a wing chair by the window and sprawled out on it. George leaned against the wall, his ankles loosely crossed and his arms crossed against his chest.

"We've heard a story," Fred said.

"Right," George said. "Seems our brother was keeping something from us last year--"

"--something of great interest--"

"--Ron's always been a git that way, keeping secrets--"

Remus looked at them curiously. "What secret is that? I'm presuming it's not Sirius's innocence that's brought you here."

Fred sat up and leaned forward in the chair. "When you were busy sending us all over the school to find Red Caps for your test--"

"Best detention we ever had, by the way," George cut in.

"--we never guessed that we already knew you."

"Already knew me?" Remus asked.

"You don't think Harry pulled that Map out of Filch's office, do you?"

"Not that he's not clever enough, he is, but he never thinks to just open a drawer and see what's there." George shook his head. "A sad failing--"

"Yes, deplorable lack of curiosity--"

"--a failing which we don't share." George grinned admiringly and pulled over another chair. He turned it around and sat backward. "We've already had part of the story from Sirius downstairs. We didn't believe him when he said old respectable Professor Lupin was in on this business."

"I think the Map should call him Professor Moony now, don't you, George?"

Remus smiled. "I don't think the Map would take well to an authoritative title. And I'm hardly respectable."

George feigned a yawn. "Right, right the whole werewolf business. You're a pariah, I forgot. So, Sirius said you actually drew it."

"Er..."

Fred nodded eagerly. "And that you're quite the Charms inventor. If we hadn't found out you were a Marauder, we'd never ask this--"

"Not that we didn't already think you were brilliant--"

"--but we're trying to get a little business started, as, shall we say--"

"--Purveyors of Magical Mischief?" George waggled his eyebrows.

"I see," Remus said.

Fred waved his wand, and a suitcase with a large "W" on it appeared. "Thought you might appreciate a bit of our Charm-work..."

I'd like it as close to canon as possible please and I'll stick it on my site in the future, but I would love to see the scene of Dumbledore asking Remus to come teach prior to Prisoner of Azkaban. I don't think I've ever read that before and I keep imagining that their conversation would be pretty intense. Would that be okay?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: May 18th, 2009 07:53 am (UTC) (Link)
Remus stepped out of the Ministry, blinking into the bright sunlight. Until he'd actually got here, he'd been sure it would be dark out, somewhere deep in the bowels of the night. That it was still light seemed wrong, given how long the interrogation had taken. They hadn't been shy about mentioning that someone would be searching his flat while they were talking to him, either.

Or at least, his former flat. An owl had come from his landlady in the middle of everything, informing him that his things had been packed up and delivered to the Ministry (Dora had intercepted them and sent them to her parents' home), and that he owed her gold for damage to the floor, which she was quite sure he'd caused, now that she'd been told of his condition, which he ought to have informed her about before she rented to him, and she would see to it that she would have restitution for this infamous neglect.

Suddenly too tired to go on, Remus sat down on the steps.

"Ah, Remus."

He opened his eyes. The tall, thin figure was standing between him and the sun, casting crazy shadows. Remus scrambled to sit up straighter, then gave up and stood. "Professor Dumbledore!"

"Albus, Remus, or I shall have to start calling you Mr. Lupin again." Dumbledore gestured to a bench across the street. He sat down. "You look like you've had a rather unpleasant day."

Remus sat, looking down at the cobbles with more interest than they deserved. "To put it mildly." He pushed his breath out between his teeth. "I promise, if Sirius had tried to contact me, this would have been an entirely different sort of interrogation."

"Then I am quite glad he has not, as you'd be of no use whatsoever to me in Azkaban."

Remus was too tired not to take the bait. "And what use do you imagine I am to you now?"

"I have lost another Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, I'm afraid."

"Hmph. Gilderoy Lockhart didn't work out?"

"I'm afraid Professor Lockhart has met with ill-fortune," Dumbledore said mildly. "And I believe the time has come for me to take advantage of your good nature and your training in the classroom. Minerva McGonagall always spoke highly of your abilities as a teacher, you know."

"Kind of her, but a moot point. I somehow doubt that the governors will approve a werewolf teacher."

"I have hiring discretion. And the Board is bound by the same secrecy as anyone else who needs to be told."

Remus wanted to jump at this. He certainly needed somewhere to live, and he wouldn't entirely miss his most recent employment, cleaning up the potion dregs from behind the apothecary. And to teach, to do the one thing he'd ever cared to do... he'd been out of a classroom since he'd lost the post in Wales, and...

He shook his head. "It's not safe for me to be on the grounds."

"I have a Potions Master who is quite capable of brewing the new Wolfsbane potion, which I'm told is quite effective in controlling the more unpleasant personality changes."

This was an entirely new wrinkle, and Remus found that he was unable to process it. "So, you're trying to find a cover to just hand me this potion?"

"No. The potion is to keep you safe around the students, who are in need of a Defense expert at any rate. And you are the man I want for this post, particularly this year."

"Particularly this year?"

"Remus, I'm afraid I share the Ministry's opinion that Sirius will try to contact you. He will assume that your friendship will hold. I am hoping he'll try to contact you before moving in the direction which is is undoubtedly his ultimate goal."

"Harry," Remus said.

Dumbledore nodded. "So you see, Mr. Lupin, I need you for several reasons, not the least of which is protecting James and Lily's son."

Remus grimaced. "You know I won't refuse that."

"Yes." Dumbledore smiled. "Which is why I brought it up. I am quite devious enough, I'm afraid, to use such a thing in order to secure a decent Defense Against the Dark Arts professor." He stood up. "You may settle yourself at Hogwarts as soon as you'd like, but I would appreciate it if you would provide an adult presence on the train. Make sure Harry finds you, but... let us, shall we say, keep the past a private matter for the time being?"

Remus nodded, and watched Dumbledore walk away.
