Spewing out too many words since November 2003

Goodness gracious!
I think it may be a sign of my advancing age that I now use the phrase "Goodness gracious!" without any irony at all. I just told a patron looking for Animal Farm, "All the Orwell seems to be out. Goodness gracious! We don't even have 1984 in."

Frighteningly, I realized that I've been using this phrase for awhile now.

:will now go shopping for blue rinse to put in my hair:

As long as you don't start saying, "Oh, my stars!", you'll be all right.

I don't think we'll haul you off to the geriatric ward yet, Fern. But I know how you feel...I said "Mercy me!" a couple of weeks ago and could almost feel my body sprouting new wrinkles.

Well, I declare!

I suppose you'll be saying "No chocolate in the library!" next?

I'm only nineteen, and I'm already guilty of "Golly!"

Come to think of it, though, I had to learn "Golly!" from storybooks, as everyone who said it (at least, where I live) is already dead.

I've been guilty of "Good grief!" since I was about sixteen or so. Something about those words that begin with G.

Now, as long as all of us can stay away from "Heavens to Betsy!" we should be all right :)...

If it makes you feel any better, I'm twenty and I've been saying "goodness gracious" and variations on it for years.

I guess that could make me feel *worse*, but I like to think that 'antiquated' phrases are quirky and cute on people my (or your) age. ;)

They are certainly better than endless repetitions of profanity. I often pop out with some phrase like "Good heavens!" because I'd rather not swear. Unbecoming on a lady of my years and dignity. ;)

I'm only twenty and I'm rather fond of "nifty".

You didn't follow it up with "...great balls of fire!" did you? Heh.
