Last GP drabble - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Last GP drabble
Made my quota! :)

Anyway, this was actually an idea of kikei's from the gen ficathon challenge and I've been thinking about it for awhile (I chose the Bilius story instead), but I wasn't able to get a full story out of it. I may expand it later.

Title: Grayfur (3)
House: Gryffindor
Word Count: 100
Characters: Phineas (Hogwarts portrait), Mrs. Black (portrait) -- OotP, end
A/N: Related to the "Grayfur" and "Grayfur (2)" but not a continuation

"I don't believe it," Phineas said brusquely, then retreated from his frame quickly, off to Grimmauld Place, to end to this unamusing prank of his great-great-grandson's.

"Sirius!" he yelled, fleeing from portrait to portrait. "Sirius!"

"WHAT HAS HE DONE?" Alya's portrait screeched. "TRAITOROUS CHILD!"

"A poor jest. Dumbledore claims he is dead."

Shocked silence. Phineas understood that Sirius really was not in the house, waiting to cry, "Fooled you, didn't I, Grayfur?"

But surely, he was elsewhere.

He returned stubbornly to his portrait, his arms on the frame, and waited.

And waited.

"MURDEROUS THIEVES!" Alya wailed suddenly.

Heh, your name for Mrs Black is kind of like mine (Alcyone). Is it a star one?

Yup--it's on this list of Arabic star names (this has the meaning "fatty tail of a sheep, but another listing names it "snake", probably for the constellation it's in) as well as in a few other places. Also called Theta Ser. Part of the constellation Serpens. Heh-heh-heh.

Since I'm a big fan of the Earth's Children series of course I'm always reading "Alya" as "Ayla." Heh heh.

I called my Mrs. Black "Alcyone" in a fic I wrote long ago (and it's a fic I now wish I hadn't written. Ever write a fic and look back and think "Oh what was I thinking?") Really, I'm not surprised we writers have come up with the same or similar names for our Black family members, as the star-naming pattern is canon.

The nice things about pattern names is the ability to make reasonable sounding guesses. I think we can be relatively sure that Mrs. Black's first name wasn't Mary Jane, at any rate.

Now, I'm tracking down more on Serpens. I'm really liking the snake mythology here. (Alya, btw, is the very tale of the snake in Serpens Cauda.)

You wrote "Not the Cross but the Light"? I loved that thing! Probably won't turn out to be a fair assessment of Narcissa, but I enjoy it for now.

Thanks! And I'll bet lots of writers read Harry's little bit of imagination and had to go there. I'm late in the game on it; there are probably dozens out there.
