Ask the OCs
Well, my brain is not in the story for various RL reasons today. But I need to interact.

So, ask my HG OCs anything, I'll answer in character.

So, Albinus, how did you end up getting the District 12 mentoring job? Did you apply for it, draw the short straw, something in between? And even though district 12 tributes aren't really cut from the same cloth as district 2 ones and it's pretty obvious that there's some tension between you, is there anything about this group which makes you think one of them might be the winner? Two 10s is pretty impressive, after all.

It's the price of having a very successful tribute -- Brutus was popular, and they demanded that he take on District Two mentoring, because the people wanted to see him. I'd rather be at the Games than at home, so I volunteered to mentor one of the less successful districts, the ones who had no living victors. There were two, District Six and District Twelve. I flipped a coin with a spare mentor from Four. I lost.

Those scores are mostly about who will make good television, who they'll follow around with the cameras. It's true that the ones with low scores are hopeless, but high scores, often as not, are because the Gamemakers think someone will look good on television, which Donner and Abernathy will. Barring some kind of arena catastrophe wiping out the better tributes, I don't see much of a chance.

Thanks! Damn, that's going to be one awkward post-victory tour, isn't it?

This is interesting - it makes sense from his point of view (though it also glosses over his alpha-male headbutting with Haymitch, but he would do that...)

Lacklan - did you get those glasses? What did you think of Haymitch's interview? How's your mum?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 21st, 2013 08:23 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't get the ones that boy was going to mail, but the Games producers actually got me a pair that was right for my eyes. I had someone check them and everything. Now, I can see the whole Games. Someone said they were from Caesar Flickerman himself. Did you know that if you shake glasses that you're wearing, you can make the world move around?

Mom's holding on. They're not filming her much, because they think it's gross when she starts coughing. Most of the Capitol people are really disgusted by her. She had a coughing fit in the middle of an interview, and the cameraman threw up. The make-up people complain that they can't get her to look decent.

Oh, right, and Haymitch's interview -- sounds like what he's said pretty much every year when we have to watch them. If he still thinks that when he's there, maybe the other things he thinks will work actually will.

I'd like to ask Haymitch's mom what she thinks of his relationship with Digger.
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 21st, 2013 01:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, dear, those children -- I love her quite a lot, but they're so young. I don't think either of them has ever considered not being in this relationship, and I can only hope, at this point, that it works out for them, because it would kill them to go through a split. I worry. On the other hand, she's well-suited to him, and she understands him... and puts up with him. I love my son, but the latter can sometimes be difficult. It always was with his father.

Pelagia, what do you think of the District 12 tributes? Do you think any of them have a chance of going far in the games?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 21st, 2013 01:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
I always love my tributes. That makes this job very hard. This particular group is the worst for me. There are so many of them, and they're all very sweet, and... I don't know if it's something about being from such a small district, or if it's because the Quell is frightening, but they seem closer to each other, and they look after each other.

I always like to think they have a chance, so I may not be the best judge -- Albinus certainly thinks I'm crazy -- but yes, I think our two tens were not accidental. Maysilee and Haymitch are smart as little whips, and resourceful.

Alaric Foote (M tribute D6) did you by any chance have a distant relative named Padraic from Great Britain? :P

On a more serious note, Digger, how did you and Haymitch start dating? What was it about him that drew him to you? Do you think he has it in him to win?

fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 21st, 2013 01:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
1. Well, our family trees get a little murky before Panem (though my mother has a weird propensity to try and write them out on the walls...)

2. Haymitch and I fell into dating after being friends for a good while. When I was nine and my parents died, I tried to cover it up, so my baby brother and I wouldn't go to the Community Home. Maybe if I hadn't done that, my brother would be alive. I woke up one morning, and he wasn't breathing, and I didn't know what to do, so I picked him up and ran up the street to the Abernathys. I'd met them, but didn't really know them. No one did. Mr. Abernathy had just died, and I knew Mrs. Abernathy would be home, because she was still in mourning. Only it was too late. I stayed there while she took care of everything, and Haymitch and I got to be friends. He told me stories. I thought he was wonderful and funny and nice. We became best friends, and when people started dating around us, it seemed normal that we should date. Why not date someone you get along with? (It's weird how few people think about that.)

I do think he has it in him to win. Everyone believes that about the people they love, I guess, but I really do think so. I'm just not sure what it will do to him if he does.

Kaydilyn: How is your relationship with the Seam kids?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 22nd, 2013 02:34 am (UTC) (Link)
I get along with some and not others, same as with the town kids. I used to always reach out and be extra nice, but Danny Mellark told me that came off... wrong. Like I thought they needed to be patronized. I'm not like Maysilee. I don't really get along with a lot of people at all, like she does, but the ones I do like, I keep around, no matter where they're from.

There are Seam kids who just see me and say not just "merchant" but "merchant of useless luxury goods." They don't bother trying to get along with me, and it's mutual.

If I can ask a question of Digger from beyond the veil . . . how do you feel about your namesake?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 22nd, 2013 02:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Ain't that a hoot and half? All those years later, and he kept the promise to me that I made to him.

Of course, she's not especially like me, except in the way most of the girls -- well, ladies -- that Haymitch has surrounded himself with have some things in common. (One being that we all love clothes. I think it's the only way he can justify it to himself that he's a clothes horse, if he can blame it on the women in his life just insisting on it. And don't let Katniss kid you. She's as bad as he is.)

So, Indigo is definitely not a "Digger." She had a "Go-go" phase, which I'm glad I never tried. It's right and fitting that the person she looks most like is Rhona, except that she's got Effie's eyes. She's a pretty little thing. Much prettier than me, which is probably why Plutarch Heavensbee wants her on television. And you know how most people are a little bit of both of their parents? My little namesake likes to just switch between them at will. One minute, she'll be all Little Miss Capitol. But let me strongly suggest that you never, ever cross her, because you'll get a reminder that her daddy's a victor. In a BIG way. Haymitch prefers to ignore this.

What were the consequences of your conversation with Martinus Snow, when you were "given" to him for his birthday?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: August 23rd, 2013 03:32 am (UTC) (Link)
The primary consequence was that Martius died. I convinced someone that what Snow was doing was wrong, and Snow killed him. And it was his own son. His own self-replacement, if you believe the rumors.

So I guess the consequence for me was that I did not discuss anything with anyone after that. Beetee wanted me in the Rebellion. I know a lot about the power grids. But when I saw that Snow literally would not scruple at murdering his own child, I decided there was not a chance of it working.

Question for the Greens

I didn't catch this thread until later, but if it's still possible I would like to ask the Greens abut the language Kersey spoke before she died. I thought at first it was a Native/First Nations language like Cherokee, but then based on some other clues...was it Yiddish? Or Hebrew? Or Aramaic maybe?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: September 1st, 2013 08:01 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Question for the Greens

It was Hebrew. She said "Rachaman," which means "merciful." She also said part of the Sh'ma prayer, but she couldn't remember all the words.
