thanks, hurray!

Can I cheat and ask three characters the same question? Lyme, Drake and Cato, would you each describe what was going through your head when you volunteered (assuming you did)?

Re: thanks, hurray!

[Lyme]I bought the whole business until roughly five seconds after the countdown in the arena ended, and the bloodbath got going. I stayed with my alliance because I though I could keep us alive a little longer, but yeah -- when I first saw a boy I'd trained with lying on the ground with half his insides on the outside, I stopped thinking about the Games as an athletic event in which I could excel. Unfortunately, that was long after I volunteered.

[Drake]I grew up in the Community Home, and I knew how much they needed -- clothes, food, a decent media center, everything. So I started training myself, watching over the wall while the rich kids trained in Victors' Village (they had to pay the Peacekeepers to look the other way). It was all supposedly "outreach" by the victors, physical fitness, you name it, but they certainly didn't teach lethal weaponry in the school gym. So I watched, and I learned, and I practiced on my own, so that just once, we could get a little money and glory for those of us whose families broke their backs on the quarries, instead of waiting on the Peacekeepers in training.

[Cato]You don't understand what it's like in District Two. The victors are gods. Everyone wants to be a victor, so of course I volunteered. I worked hard to be the volunteer they chose, too. I knew I could win, and I would have, except for a really bad piece of luck.

Thanks!

The Career districts - people who volunteer to go and fight to the death - fascinate me. I love the take you gave us on melee. I hope we get to see Career culture developed further.
