Oh I'm enjoying this so much. I love how wrenching this choice is (with the advantage of knowing how it ends, of course). It's only going to get worse when he realises that Peeta has a decent chance himself, too.

I'm enjoying watching Haymitch and Effie still figuring out a way to work together. She's definitely still in there. Not making anywhere near the same connections she used to, but she still sort of defaults to who she was.

In the end, I think there are parts of our personalities/souls that you just can't brainwash out of us, even if it looks like it. That's one of the reasons I like AUs -- change all the events, and see what's absolute, as opposed to what's dependent on circumstances. I think, when you come down to it with Effie, she's a very generous and kind person, and pushed to make choices, those are the traits she'll fall back on. (Which is, I think, the essence of the Capitol re-education: They narrow the places in her life where she makes choices, and discourage questioning.)
