Just went and checked some things in the Eversion of HG I have. I used the find command to find river, and nothing came up. Now, that doesn't mean anything; she could have described a river and just not called it that. But, the stream Kattniss keeps describing is shallow but wide, and there's no mention of walking past or through a dry riverbed on their way back to the lake. There's just the mention of the dry stream, along with the drained ponds/pools. This makes me think you were exactly right about your crater lake idea, as well as them using natural things as a base. After all, how much easier would it be to just use the natural topography of a crater lake, with the natural lake as the center, and then create a watercourse with a shallow, wide stream that had ponds etc. etc. And the created watercourse would explain how they were able to drain everything but the lake overnight; it'd be like draining your swimming pool, essentially.

Note this comes from someone with limited understanding of designed water courses, so I could be off, but that seems the most logical explanation. Hope that helps some.:)

Ah, good catch. I was just thinking "river" -- probably movie pollution; it looked like a shallow river. Though I've seen creeks that wide, too.
