I love seeing all the behind-the-scenes maneuvering -- it's not surprising Katniss doesn't think much about it, since the situation she's in calls for full attention to her surroundings, but I read this and think "Of course that's what was happening, how could it have been otherwise?" Brutus is something else, though, isn't he? I like how the idea of having both his tributes survive just whooshes right over his head because that's not what he's interested in and he doesn't see it as a benefit.

Brutus has drunk the Kool-Aid in a big way. He's thinking of it as something like a real athletic competition -- the Olympics or whatnot -- and he's in a high dudgeon about the judges letting emotions interfere with "fair" scoring. And in a competition where the losers didn't, you know, die, I'd be totally with him. But Haymitch has his head screwed on straighter.
