Oh -- a brief note:

Further away, Katniss decides that she's had enough, and uses Rue's mockingjay call, which Effie say she and Peeta agreed on as a signal, but he doesn't answer. I doubt he can hear over the stream.

I was reading this section of the book and Katniss teaches Peeta a different birdcall, not Rue's. Calls that out overtly:

"I teach him a bird whistle - not a melody like Rue's but a simple two-note whistle - which we can use to communicate that we're all right. Fortunately, he's good at this. Leaving him with the pack, I head off. "

and in your paragraph:
which Effie say she

Should that be "says"?

Anywho--I love your Haymitch, and I hope you're also getting a slew of writing done in your own universe. You're a great writer and I'd love to buy your books.

And, dammit, if Cassandra Clare can get a book deal, YOU should be able to get a book deal. You're 3x the writer she is. Hmpf!

Gah, I had a feeling that was wrong when I wrote it, but I didn't go back and check. Fixed to the two-note call she used.

My problem is not having my own universe to get much done in, unfortunately. I always look at them and say, "No, this is stupid... this is too clearly derived from... etc." Which is totally my fault, and if anyone else said it, I'd give the whole, "There's no such thing as original" speech, but, you know.

ACK!

Fern, close your ears.

Fern's Inner Critic: Listen up, bub. You need to shut up and let the woman write. *I* want to buy her novels and you're starting to piss me off.

All done, Fern!

[Fern's Inner Critic]But they'll see all the serial numbers filed off. Someone will SUE her! Bwa-ha-ha! I know what scares her![/FIC]

:p

Thanks. I have a general idea that mixes a lot of my interests (a dystopia caused when magic violently re-enters the world and upsets the carefully rational mix of things), but now, I need a story.

Dear FIC

If Jo Rowling doesn't have to pay someone for the word "Muggle"....

You're FINE.

Am I missing something? Was that an actual lawsuit, Rowling getting sued for "muggle"?

Quick, somebody spill some hot McDonald's coffee on the plaintiff!

It was. There was a book called "Ra and the Muggles" and the author tried to claim that JKR stole her story. Sigh. It was dismissed, of course, but what an annoyance.

It went for YEARS! And wasn't the original writer dead and it was her estate anyway?
