Great update!

One possible nitpick:

...I have no idea why Finnick's mother is talking about trees...

^I had the impression that (1) His mom was Gia and (2) that Haymitch had sorted that out during whatever story you told from Effie's POV. If so, since we're in Haymitch's POV here, might it work better to say: I have no idea why Gia is talking about trees...

Just to confirm that Haymitch sorted that out, since I think I'm supposed to have picked up on it as a reader. On another note, I find it amusing that Haymitch doesn't know what she's talking about (I assumed it referred to his own Games, where he climbed a tree or two to mess with the Gamemakers by plugging their holes, etc.). Nice job on that all around!

Again, loved it.

No, he has NO IDEA that Gia is Finn's mother. He doesn't work it out till well after the final battle where they have a reunion on the beach, and she elects to go on pretending to be a district four woman, and not reclaiming Gia Pepper.

I thought the trees thing meant suicidal tendencies. I guess Gia erroneously expects Haymitch to pick up on her identity.

Yeah, Blight knows -- he set her up with Doolin, after a fashion, though he didn't expect it to take the turn it did. Haymitch? Clueless.

Like vytresna guessed, Gia erroneously assumes he knows perfectly well. She thinks that's why he takes care of Finnick, when in fact, it's just because he likes the kid.

Awesome, gotcha. Thanks.

On another note, can someone direct me to the point in the later story where Haymitch figures it out? I think someone commented that he sorted it out later. I read the last story first I think, so it wouldn't have clicked for me what was going on there and I might have forgotten it.

Thanks for the clarification everyone!

Found it! :) It was in a challenge call back in March 2014, a ficlet called 'Under the Pier' (sorry I can't put the link but you should be able to find it).
