Charlie's age - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Charlie's age
Thank heaven, JKR just did the simple thing with Charlie's age--said she was wrong and gave him another year, so he's three years ahead of Percy, and no math problem. I note that she still has no interest in making the quidditch issue square, though, so we have to assume that Gryffindor's team other than Charlie was pretty bad! Sounds like it's time to go messing around her site looking for Easter eggs, though.

EDIT: A side comment cemented the Marauder age issue as well. In her comment on why she likes Sirius, she said he was around 22 when he was captured, which squares with 35-36 for the PoA year, and 36 in GoF, which was where the confusion was about the ages (was she talking about GoF or PoA for the age?), and therefore 37-38 in OotP. Same for Remus. Yay. Settled. Though, granted, "around 22" isn't absolutely specific. He could have just turned twenty-three or be nearly twenty-two.

Um, okay, I guess that's not all that settled.

Perhaps that's why Charlie decided to go into the dragon business? Maybe he figured that working with dragons was better than working with his teammates! ;>

I, too, am glad JKR did the simple thing and admitted she didn't get the math right the first time around. Since my reaction to math is the same as hers - "oh, dear" - I don't blame her for the error.

I was glad to hear that, too.

I forget who came up with this theory about Charlie and Gryffindor winning the Quidditch Cup, but I kind of like it:
Remember Troy, Mullet, and Moran who won the QWC for Ireland even though Krum got the Snitch? We know that Seamus, who is Irish, goes to Hogwarts, so perhaps these three did also. If they were at Hogwarts at the same time as Charlie and on the same not-Gryffindor House team, and the rest of the Gryffindor team was awful, they could have whomped Gryffindor down to third or fourth place in the House Quidditch Cup even with Charlie being a great seeker.
I've been playing with the numbers just now; if we decide that the comments about "Slytherin has won for the last seven years" in PoA count the aborted CoS season, Charlie could have won the HQC for Gryffindor as a second-year, in his first year on the team. The next year, TM&M got their act together and Gryffindor was *really* toast. Or something like that. Whatever.

I assumed that the Easter Eggs she refers to are the last batch, specifically her geography gaffes in the dragon book pages. *shrug*

it's all settled enough to me. there wil be enough panic about her stuff about creeveys' camera. Let all the analytical peopel dig up hereveyr word and read betwene theletters of it. I' msorry, i soud nabit iffy aobuthat-one but i've been through comments and the same hapened as after the chat or the updates-before-last. if she hesitates on somethign in a transcript, if she stammers or there's apose, if there's one typing blunder eveyroen jumps upand yells 'clue!!! ooooh shiny new clues!!"
no i don't midn peopel lokignfor clues. i'm reading the interviews for extra info t oo. And it wasn'this post or real ybig irratatiosn you know it's just..meh, i figured otu for myself to putthe marauders at scool i n1971 and now it'l be 1970. *shrug*

I think Charlie's age and the Quidditch Cup issue was just one more little mathematical fact that JKR has forgotten, or managed to mis-calculate!! It will be interesting to see if she ever corrects it when she gets around to do major revisions of all the books after Book 7 has been published - I think that she once said she would like to go back and fix up a few little bits and pieces here and there.

And yes, her comments on Sirius' age don't really clear things up, though perhaps she will post his birthday so we can all calculate, given the cut-off date for starting at Hogwarts, and the fact that he went to Azkaban in November 1981.

And he was only "slightly unbalanced by his time in Azkaban"? I have always wondered how he remained sane at all, after 12 years in that place.
