Along the same lines, but not exactly the same question, I've often tried to play with how various superpowers/psychic abilities could be used in ordinary ways in our world (Anne McCaffrey's Pegasus/Tower and Hive series do a good job with this theme).

I did my PhD in a synthetic chemistry lab where many of our reactions were extremely sensitive to air/temperature/water etc. and my colleagues and I would joke about how we could use superpowers to improve our chemistry.

For example, instead of doing inert-atmosphere reactions using fancy, fiddly glassware, vacuum pumps and gas cylinders, you could just telekinetically suspend the material in a ball of argon gas in air. A thermokinetic could provide temperature control, hell, you could maybe even force atoms/particles to interact and make all sorts of new materials (which could then have interesting, possibly supernatural powers).

I think that's in part why your first (copyrighted :p) idea is the most interesting to me. Because it's not necessarily about the power, but about how it's used.
Not great for a blockbuster movie, but far more interesting from a world-building perspective, at least to me.

I like thermokinesis! Cool!

I'm giving thought to what kind of story I want to tell with this character right now.
