Thoughts on photo-manips, movie actors, etc - The Phantom Librarian

Thoughts on photo-manips, movie actors, etc
It's been awhile since I've done a serious photomanip, mixing features and all to create a new character (or a transitional character, like between-Jake-and-Hayden!Anakin in the Family Portrait cover). I thought I'd have a shot at "creating" a Tonks. It's not finished yet, but it uses Juliet Landau's face as a base (the Bella connection, even though, as an American, JL has no chance of being cast), with Audrey Hepburn's eyes and hair borrowed from late '80s Corey Haim (and tinted pink). I was going to give her some feature from Sirius--a smile occurred to me--but I discovered something: Gary Oldman doesn't smile unless he has facial hair. Lord knows why. And since the facial hair is too close to the mouth to not show up when I borrow it, it's useless for a Tonks-y picture.

I also looked for a picture of Thewlis. He smiles sometimes, but it's a kind of odd smile. And I realized something else. A year hasn't really warmed me up to him as Lupin. He's a marvelous actor and I don't think he was "creepy" in the role, but I have to actually call up a picture to remember what he looked like in the part. My mental Lupin hasn't taken on any of Thewlis's characteristics (and still maintains most of the MacGregor ones, though I've sharpened his nose a bit). No matter what picture I find of Thewlis, in or out of character, it never looks "right" to me. Which is weird--I'm generally quite tolerant of different actors and interested in seeing different physical takes on a character. But in this case, it just never connects in my imagination at all. Most of the others--including Oldman, though I think he's too old for the part--ultimately have at least a tentative claim.

I think I have a picture of Oldman smiling without the facial hair. Of course, he also happens to be piss-ass drunk at the time with one hand clutching a bottle and the other around Charlie Sheen's neck, so... *ahem* I shall scan if you want. I also think I have one of him from the premier of PoA where he's smiling, shall look for that if you want it.

Thewlis! Lupin... I am slowly warming up to him. I mean, I still see a different Lupin in my head when I write. but he's different from before... he's definitely taller (have you seen how TALL Thewlis is?) and there are a few things from the movie I can live with in my fics now. but yeah, I'm still largely on my own idea of Lupin. However... *points to icon* at times, Thewlis as Lupin... it can really make more sense than I care to admit.

I'll, er, skip the drunk!Oldman. :) I think Tonks would morph out those skinny little lips anyway. ;)

...Juliet Landau is your Bellatrix, too? ::high five!::

Also, I totally agree about Thewlis. He put heart into the role and acted it so marvellously that it really didn't bug me during the movie, but before and after, I've just been utterly confounded, as he looks SO LITTLE like the Lupin in my head that I really am at a loss for words.

Exactly! It's nothing against Thewlis, who's a wonderful actor. The casting just doesn't quite gel for some reason. It's a real disconnect in a way that the others aren't.

Too true. I just scoff at the Radcliffe kid and go "meh" at the other actors who don't really fit but have influenced my thinking regardless (Grint and Rickman) but Thewlis, man...I'm eternally discombobulated.

Oh, wow. I very rarely think about what actors I'd put in different roles, but Juliet Landau would be absolutely perfect as Bellatrix. I'm fairly ambivalent on Thewlis-Lupin, as looks go. A lot of pictures of him younger (usually seen in people's icons) look more right to me than anything in costume. It's kind of hard for me to say, because I really don't have a mental image of most characters. I can look at a picture and know immediately whether or not it looks "right" for my impression of the character, but I don't actually picture anyone, actor or otherwise.

I forget where I first heard the idea of Juliet Landau as Bella, but it's just one of those cases of hearing it kind of suddenly locking it in. (Which is I'm afraid what happened with the Ewan MacGregor rumors on Lupin. I'm not much of a MacGregor fan, but for some reason, he just sort of snapped into place and wouldn't leave, so he largely took over, though tinaling's Lupin concept made a shocking advance on him as soon as I saw it (and in fact has mostly been the image I have in my head for "Shifts"). (See him with the Marauder's Map here by clicking on the thumbnail of the candle flame.) So my current version is a cross between the two.

(Er, click "Artis" in the left menu first.)

Juliet Landau has been Bella for me from the moment she appeared in OotP. I think the heavy-lidded description started me leaning that way, but it was the minute she opened her mouth and talked like Drusilla that the image was cemented in my head. I'm sure JK was a Buffy fan and had her in mind when she wrote the character. Bella is just SO Dru! She has that same psychotic sweet madness; you know she would 'play' with her prey.
I never saw Ewan as Lupin, although I can see him as James! Which I find interesting. ;~P (specially the black-haired Moulin Rouge Ewan!)

Never saw MR, so I couldn't judge. I see him with full Obi-Wan AotC hair as Lupin. Kinda wolfy. Soft-spoken. I guess I'm casting Obi-Wan as Lupin more than EMcG. :p

Thewlis!Lupin reminded me too much of one of my ex-boyfriends. X didn't wear cardigans or have a mustache, but he looked a lot like Thewlis, and had the personality of Canon!Draco. This goes a long way towards explaining why Thewlis Is Not My Lupin.

My "Mental Remus" is derived from the fan art of Lisa Rourke, mkholmquist and seviet. Lisa's and mkholmquist are on the SugarQuill art section, the latter as A.L. de Sauveterre. All these ladies have drawn wonderful Remuses, or Remii.

As for Tonks, when I saw the movie "Gosford Park" there was an actress named Camilla Crawford who would make a perfect Tonks.

I can't wait for the Tonks pic! It sounds really cool.

I've never tried to photomanip anything, I don't think I'd have the patience to put it together. But can't wait to see your Tonks!
