Willow and the magic arc

Oh, why not? Buffy post.

I'm an AU writer, so I often will ask questions like "What if such-and-such happened instead of thus-and-so?" It doesn't usually mean that I didn't like the original form; I just find it an interesting way to explore the story. I liked "The Wish" for that reason, and have been playing around with the idea of what would have happened if Oz hadn't left after l'affaire Veruca. (I do wish Oz hadn't left, but the interest of the AU is figuring out all the things that happened in a chain effect from his departure, and how that would have changed the Buffy-verse.)

But every now and then, there is a place where I wish the powers-that-be had made different choices. I don't tend to write AUs on that, because these are external decisions that are about who the characters are and what they want, rather than plot events which could set things in motion without changing the underlying identities of the characters. I don't necessarily think they turned out badly (always), but I can't shake the feeling that I might have liked it better a different way. With Buffy, it's the switching of Willow from a really smart, bookish, computer-friendly girl into "the most powerful Wicca in the Western Hemisphere."
