Best and worst dressed... huh?
Okay, I went to look at the best and worst dressed photos from the Oscars, and I don't get it. Yeah, I thought Johnny Depp's costume was a little wonky, but Robin Williams was quirkily Williams-esque. They called Melanie Griffith's dress too fussy and one of the worst of the night, but I thought it was sort of pretty--not the best dress I've ever seen, but not horrible. I also didn't mind Penelope Cruz's bouffant, and Drew Barrymore's dark hair looks way better than Renee Zellweger's (not great, but much, much better), but DB gets on the "worst looks" list, while RZ is on the "best dressed" list... and RZ looked HORRIBLE. Even in the picture meant to show that she was "best dressed," she looked horrible. (I must admit that even at her best--when she's dressed in light colors and blonde--I find her sort of meh-looking. I don't get the obsession H'wood has with her.) Hillary Swank's dress was pretty, but not mind-blowing. Halle Barry's was great and deserved a mention, but Natalie Portman's was just... shrug. Not a flattering color on her (NP's a woman who could get away with the red RZ was wearing). And too low cut; she looked uncomfortable, and uncomfortable isn't attractive.

So, you know... I don't get it. What are the criteria?

Criteria: critic's opinion. I saw a best/worst dressed list earlier today that listed Drew Barrymore as one of the best and Renee Zellweger as one of the worst... so there you go.

For what it's worth, I'd pick Cate Blanchett as best-of-the-best and Hilary Swank as worst-of-the-worst. There were a lot of in-betweens. How about you?

I only looked at the best and worst pics from AOL's People feed. I loathed Cate Blanchett's hair, and rather liked Drew Barrymore's. I might have liked Zellweger's dress on an actress it suited better. I adored HB's dress, and was fond of Melanie Griffith's.

I kinda liked Cate Blanchett's hair but mostly loved her dress. Agree that Drew Barrymore's hair (and Halle Berry's dress) were great... and that Zellweger's whole... look, really... would have looked better on someone else. I don't think I got a good enough look at Melanie Griffith to comment.

...Johnny Depp looked kind of goofy, but I think that's part of the appeal.

Frankly, I don't care. I have the movies I like, the actresses I like and if People doesn't, that's their problem...

I like Natalie! ;)

Eh. To tell you the truth, I wasn't really looking @ it.

I like Natalie, too, or at least don't dislike her. I think she's one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, actually. It's just... she could get away with lovely, rich colors, but going in the whole kind of light brown... it's not a great color for her. It doesn't look horrible on her, but it doesn't do anything much for her, either.

I also tend not to like the whole sleeked back hair look. I think most women look better with a little body and moveability in their hairstyles.

I agree that Halle's dress was just awesome - she looked so glamorous and beautiful! And Renee Zellweger looked like the walking dead. I just wanted someone to force feed that girl a sandwich!

I sometimes wonder if money ever changes hands for these best/worst dressed lists...there seems to be such a disparity of judgment sometimes. Or if they are judging the dress based on their opinion of the actress.

I liked Natalie Portman's hair but found her dress kinda, well, boring. Thought Cate looked great as always, but I think she should have worn a darker colour to complement her skin.

Didn't like Hilary Swanks dress at all, just not my style, I guess.

René Zellweger looked...washed out.

I believe the primary criterion is the whimsy of the judges. There may also be coin-flipping involved.

I'd comment on dresses, but the only one I saw was Hilary Swank's.

I liked Natalie's hair (it's hard to find a pic where Nat looks bad in the face), but her dress made me go 'mwah?'. It looks like it was made from human hair.
Also, Renee Zellweger looked blech.

Bias. If you're Zelwegger/Berry/Kidman/etc, you're automatically on the Best Dressed list by default. If you're anyone else...pfft, who cares?

I saw Johnny Depp and Melanie Griffith on BOTH the best & worst lists through the People Magazine site that AOL is always advertising. How the heck did THAT happen?

Best and worst dressed lists are 80% political. They're the it-o-meter for Hollyweird.

furiosity and I were just chatting and she recommended that I friend you, as I was looking for more journals that I might actually enjoy reading to add. From the looks of it, I think that she was right. :)

Well, hi. :)

Nice to meet you.

And yes, it's political... I just can't figure out the politics! Someone's trading something! Don't know whether it's the actresses or the designers, though.

I didn't like RZ's outfit, either. She really did look dead and HOW DID SHE WALK???? Because I really didn't understand that.

I liked Kate Winslet's dress. I thought she looked stunning.

As for everyone else... it was pretty mehish.
