Crab, crab, crab, crab - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
Crab, crab, crab, crab
I'm feeling so crabby. Everything's got me on edge--literally, as people who get my f-locked posts know, I just took offense at a personal finance article. I'm annoyed at all things related to Star Wars, including my own layout, and chewing nails over "Little Bits of Junk," a story which I like but can't seem to get through in more than little coughed up bits every few days. I'm personally annoyed with computers that don't work and keeping up a nasty running commentary on the book I'm re-reading (Desperation, which is actually not a bad book, but I'm kvetching at Stephen King for no good reason). I should pick up one of the Shadow books to kvetch at Card and roll my eyes at Potok for awhile as well, just so that I'm biting at the ankles of all of my mentors. (J.K. Rowling escapes this because she's too damned young to be my mentor; she's only a couple of years older than I am, so with HP, I'm just kvetching at myself for being a lazy bitch and not having my own bestselling series, and knowing that's the worst possible frame of mind in which to sit down and write anything, which also leaves me frustrated, because not writing makes me crabby.)

Oh, well. I need a change. So I'll re-do my journal layout. Let's see what I can come up with.

For the sake of something to actually complain about, I sort of liked Legally Blonde (high in the "sort of" category), but how hard would it have been to have her a year younger than the guy she's following, so that she could be spending her senior year studying (they could use the exact same montage that they used) rather than the unbelievable notion that she took care of all the admissions silliness in the time after the boyfriend had already been accepted (and apparently having gone through some political business to get the acceptance) and before school starts. I will say, what saved the movie was that she didn't re-make her new best friend or the guys she meets. She lets them be themselves and learns that they're okay, too.

I feel a bit...: cranky cranky

I've managed to bite a few people's head off over absolutely nothing at work this week. Maybe it's something in the jet stream.

Just curious; what's bugging you Star Wars-wise lately?

I ask because I might - just might - be able to relate.

Oh, pretty much all the spoilers I've seen. I didn't even like the trailer. I'm not going to be any more specific than that, though.

I know what you mean about SW. (Well, maybe; my crankiness is a bit more focused on SW itself while yours seems more general.) It's actually been a lovely relief not dealing with it this past week. A lot of it's RotS stuff, some of it's just the general fandom bitchiness that for some reason lately sets me on edge a lot more than it used to.

Actually, my main problem with Legally Blonde is the fact that she likes bright pink. I don't like pink, but I know that some people do and that's cool. But I'll never think that white girls with a complexion like that and light blonde hair can get away with wearing an outfit that's really bright pink without any "cooler" colors to break it off. I don't see how that's fashion. It looks like pepto bismal.

Yeah, there's that, too. But it's an affectation; I'm not sure it's supposed to look good on her so much as express something about her personality. I hope. Bright pink is a color that works much better with darker skin and hair (though bright pink is possibly better with pale skin than pale pink... as a pale girl, I don't think even white washes me out more than pale pink; hot pink/fuschia isn't too bad, though). Jewel tones would be better, or deep blues and greens. But they wouldn't say, "I'm a Southern California dumb blonde at first glance" quite the way pink does.

Yeah. Figured that was the idea.

Did you watch it on TBS? If not, it's on this week, so that's why I'm wondering. :) Pisses me off, their commercials for it. "Going where no blonde has gone before." I'm willing to bet good money that there are currently a lot of blondes at Harvard Law and that some of them are even from California.

Yeah--I'd seen it in bits and pieces before, but I finally saw it end to end on TBS.

And as to Harvard Law... Probably a good bet. Though I doubt they'd allow a chihuahua in the dorm, even if the owner is a SoCal blonde.

Hey... got your comment in my journal and figured I'd respond here just so you wouldn't miss it. The answer to your question is of course I won't object to your putting my drawings wherever you'd like! :) (And for the record, I think my e-mail address is at the bottom of the page where I put the drawings... I think it gets put there by default, in non-spambot-compatible at-dot form. I think.)

Also, the avocado milkshake was very refreshing and I hope you're feeling less crabby soon, because feeling crabby about everything kind of sucks.

So it is. I must have blinked at it for ages and not seen it. :eyeroll:

Would you have objections if I cut the size for file size considerations?
marycontraria From: marycontraria Date: March 20th, 2005 05:30 am (UTC) (Link)
Not at all. They're kind of only that big because I accidentally installed my scanner in Spanish or Portuguese or some other language that I don't speak, so I'm hesitant to change settings because I will have no idea how to fix them if I screw things up. Change away. :)

Here's your page.

If you'd like, I can configure the guest book to send you notices if anyone comments.

Wheee, it's like being famous!! Heh.

May I be a diva and say that my name is Leith and I think leithal looks kind of silly unless there's a little LJ man in front of it? And if you could get the guestbook to send me notices that would be lovely but you don't need to, and yay thank you!! :)
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: March 20th, 2005 04:21 pm (UTC) (Link)
Will do, on both counts.

Everything's changed but the name of the file folder.

Here ya go.

:) :) :) !!!

...that's about all I got. It looks great!

Well, I don't think Warner was actually accepted at Harvard when they started all of that, it was just assumed that of course he'd get in, he's Warner Huntington Bowes III! (Or something like that. Anyone notice how his elder brother is also "the third"? Is that the family's real last name -- Mr. and Mrs. Thethird?)

BTW, every lawyer and law student I know has always loved that movie, and can put up with absolutely everything in it...but when Elle gets her LSAT scores, everyone snorts, "Oh, that could never happen!" ;)
sreya From: sreya Date: March 20th, 2005 08:42 pm (UTC) (Link)
As a law student, I adore Legally Blonde. It mocks just the right things about law school. At the same time, I really really like Elle. Why? Because she works for what she gets, and has a beautiful attitude about it. Notice how she never tells Warner about Viviane's pranks and snide comments? She doesn't tear anyone else down to promote herself.

And the LSAT part doesn't bother me, because it's pretty clear she buckles down and studies for it, and that she's independently smart. I got a 160 without ever opening an LSAT study book, and I was sick... so someone like Elle, with a 4.0 and a keen mind who really applies herself and studies for it getting a 179 is within my range of believability.

Probable? No. But who cares about probability in a movie anyway?
fernwithy From: fernwithy Date: March 20th, 2005 09:02 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's not that she passes it, which I agree--heck, I took the LSAT on only a bit of study. It's the whole timeline that I kept getting tripped up over, especially once it was established that they were in the same year, and she wasn't spending his first year there getting ready to go. Since he already had his plans in place, I assumed that the opening date was around admissions season (winter, early spring, possibly even late spring if there was politicking involved in his admission). So she had to register for the test, take it, get her scores, get all of her recommendations, and make the funky video all before the deadline... but after Warner got accepted. I seem to recall it taking about six weeks to get the scores back alone, which would push her past the application deadline.

Yes, my brain does weird things with harmless movies.
sreya From: sreya Date: March 20th, 2005 09:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think it opens early in the school year. Although of course it's difficult to tell.

The biggest clue is that Warner was wait-listed, which would mean he didn't really get in until summer. I don't think he'd have been so cocky in the break-up scene if he'd already been accepted. More likely he was just starting the application process himself and assumed he'd get in.
