Stopportunities - The Phantom Librarian
Spewing out too many words since November 2003
So, there's a corkboard at work advertising "Staff Training Opportunities." "Staff Training" is horizontally oriented at the top. "Opportunities" is vertical down the side.

Going down the side is the word, "Stopportunities."

It makes me giggle.

Anyway, they did an entire revote on AI because of a misprint on the screen. I suppose it's fair, but it seems that it was the last two numbers that were messed up on three people and, um... Maybe I'm a bit cynical, but are there really that many viewers out there who haven't figured out the numbering system? 1-866-IDOLS (two-digit number in order of performance). I mean, are people really relying on that? Wouldn't they just be, you know, counting, and if they notice that the ninth performer has an "01" for his digits, wouldn't they say, "Oh, oops, typo. Obviously he's '09'"?

Or were the lines actually down on 09 through 11?

Sigh. I rarely actually vote anyway.

Well it's all crazy. Australia is about two weeks behind you guys on AI (we just found out the final 12), but I've never understood this whole using letters instead of numbers on the phone. They've started to do it here in Oz, but it backfired spectacularly with one mortgage lender having to rebadge a whole advertising campaign because nobody knew WTF dialling '1800RAMS' meant. Probably had something to do with the fact old dial telephones had numbers only and not letters. But a few more people are doing it now, but they have to advertise the letters, then the whole number. Why bother?

It's a stupid practice that I'm quite happy to leave in the USA. They are called phone 'numbers' for a reason. I wish we could all stop trying to adopt 'everything' that comes out of America. But then again, I'm the only person I know who's excited about the prospect of our new 'Queen Camilla'.

And as for voting on those shows... sigh. I just go for the SMS text option if I ever get the desire to vote. (doing so now for a show here like Idol called 'X Factor', but only because my brother's ex is one of the final contestants...

They probably just think it's easier to remember IDOLS than 43657. Of course, they could have gotten a simpler number.

Somehow "Stopportunities" sounds far too accurate...
