Fever Pitch

I went to see Fever Pitch today. It can't possibly be faithful to the book the credits say it's based on--no way has there been a book, an option on the book, an adaptation, and a fully filmed movie since October, and October is included in it--but it's a sweet, nice movie, and has many pretty Boston things in it. Jimmy Fallon is adorable, and Drew Barrymore... honestly, she gives a good performance. She's really found her stride in these romantic comedies.

Of course, seeing it here is an experience. The audience applauded the first shot of Fenway Park, Johnny Damon's butt, and the Hancock building and Trinity Church, and there was much murmuring about "What school is that...?" "Where are they...?" You get to see the Sox on the Duck Tour buses going into the Charles and the crowd around the park on game day (which looks very happy in the movie and is a pain in the butt to get through on the way home from work). Anyway, it made me happy. A sports-fan movie may be as close as we'll ever get to our own brand of fandom, and it's totally mainstreamed... and he's not one of those casual sports fans either. He's the sports equivalent of someone who goes to every con and keeps an encyclopedic website.

So, I'll klept this from mafdet:
I wanted to start a meme on odd things that make people absurdly happy. So here's what I want from you guys: write three things in your journal that give you a strange amount of satisfaction.

1. Rivers. G-d knows why, but I'll twist myself into a pretzel while riding along to catch a glimpse of a river. I switched bus routes and now see the Charles on the way to work, and it makes the day a lot better. I also love the Niagara and the Genessee, and even the Rio Pequeño up there in Albuquerque. And the Mystic and the Muddy and the Potomac and the Delaware and the Hudson. The one time I crossed the country by car, I was very excited about the Mississippi, and am much looking forward to seeing it again when I visit a friend who lives nearby next month. There's something about knowing that if you follow a river, you always end up someplace--you can't get lost when there's a river, but you can get somewhere totally alien. It's funky. They're also pretty. I like tracing them on maps, too. Is that deviant? ;)

2. Spring. All winter I kvetch and wonder why I moved back someplace that's cold and snowy. Then you get a day like today, when everyone in the city starts to realize that it's really coming to an end, and I swear, half the city was out on the Common, and the other half was just walking aimlessly around enjoying it. It wasn't exactly warm--especially as the hour got later--but it was gobsmackingly beautiful. Great spring green grass, squirrels running around, clear blue sky--I love the color combo of green grass, blue skies, and red bricks.

3. People having fun in fandom. We get on each other's nerves a lot, but we've got all of these inside jokes and neat stuff, and it's just really fun when they all come together.
