FFN stat fun
Hmmm. I haven't logged in for awhile, so I went to see if there was any reason why Coming Home was getting reviewed (just call me Nancy Drew; I loves me a good mystery). They've added some bells and whistles to stats. It's got my third highest hit count there (after Family Portrait (FFN version) and Of A Sort, though it's about a fifty percent drop-off from OaS. Seven of the top ten are SW stories (FP, CH, Whatever Comes to Us, The Only Question, The Smart One, Storms, and Autopilot), and the other three are HP (Of A Sort, Detention--number 4, which surprised me, and Lines of Descent). Sorting by number of reviews produces a set which bears absolutely no relationship that I can discern to hit count (except that FP is the top of both lists). My Tolkien stories, which fall in the bottom five on hit count, are in the top ten on review numbers. I'm guessing there was a reset on hit count sometime, as they both have fewer hits than reviews! My OC Star Wars stories--The Flight to Rison's Deep, Uprising, Hidden Home, The Lady of the Lake--are predictably not popular. I really must write about this phenomenon sometime. For people listing a story as a "fav," "The Doll Army" has apparently kicked the butt of of "Invisible," which came in a distant second. All three fandoms I've written make the list, though.

Hmm. I think I'll write about the unpopularity of OCs--not bad Mary Sue stuff, just disinterest--next.

Funny you should bring up OCs -- I've actually been considering opening an OC community this fall to see if it does anything. (Probably wouldn't, and I'd be just as frustrated as I am with SotW) I've realized a lot of my stories are about OCs, just because I think it's fun to move into completely unexplored territory, and using a new character is one way to do that without the mental gymnastics of why the canon characters are there.

Don't know if you've been reading much of the stuff that went up on a_p_'s boards, but I've been tossing around an idea of having a little series--group-produced--that would be all O.C. Use a small cast of regulars and just go planet to planet, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that the next...

Er, well. I was thinking of donating Slither to the cause as a wandering escapee from the Temple, staying one step ahead of the Empire and helping whoever he can while searching for his quasi-lost memory. (Actually, it's not lost; he kind of has jumbled memories from everyone in Kaadu Clan.)

Ooo, sounds like fun! I have a character I might be able to donate -- well, not a full-formed character yet, just a side character I need to make for a later scene of Drawn from the Water, but since the character shows up briefly to say "Come help us!" and then disappears again, there's nothing restricting him/her to that particular story.

Let me know if that actually comes together!

on the icon, I don't think SW has got anything on HP for a fully armed population.

On the other hand, you can flick on a light saber and cut somebody's head off in an instant (as I understand it, you don't even feel the resistance as the blade passes through the bone, do you?) whereas an AK takes some time.

Anywho, like it =)

The hit count gets reset everytime ffnet has major modifications. I think that the only way to get a true hit count is to pay the $9.95 to get one of their paid accounts, and then you're allowed to see it.

*runs off to read about the unpopularity of OCs*

Hit count used to be an extra feature for paid accounts, and currently the "stats guide" page says that if you don't buy the extra services, your hit count might get reset every so often, when they do repairs or apparently just at random.

...She says, before noticing somebody else already got to it. Sorry.

I remember reading The Flight to Rison's Deep. It's was really good and an interesting idea for a story.
